Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing. It reminds us all that, even during this

Breast Cancer Support Groups The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program offers new ongoing support groups on a weekly and monthly basis. Weekly Groups General Support Group Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women who are recently diagnosed with breast cancer will have the opportunity to meet with others in similar situations. Support Group for Caregivers of People with Breast Cancer Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Taking care of person with breast cancer can be stressful. This group is designed to address the

needs of care takers. Any person who is experiencing the stress and anxiety of caring for a loved one with breast cancer should attend. Young Women’s Support Group, Under 40 Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women under the age of 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer have unique needs. This support group will focus on hose concerns while allowing the members to share their feelings in a safe supportive environment. Anyone who wants to connect with and receive support from women under 40 should attend. Support Group for

Newly Diagnosed Stage 4 Breast Cancer Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. Meet with other women who are diagnosed with Stage 4/Metastatic Breast Cancer. Monthly Group Touchstone Group Last Monday of the Month 6-7:30 p.m. Women who received their last treatment more than 18 months ago will meet to check in with each other’s progress and

discuss new developments in the world of breast cancer. This group is for women who are not in active treatment but want to stay in touch with other survivors. Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for

three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active.

Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front

of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents

can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take

kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

On Saturday morning, August 12th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the 21st Annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books at the Student Activities Center in Stony Brook University. The Battle of the Books is an inter-library competition between teams of teens focused on eight young adult novels. This year’s novels were The Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertmann, The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, Loot by Jude Watson, Penny from Heaven by Jennifer L. Holm, QB1 by Mike Lupica, Schooled by

Gordon Korman, Space Case by Stuart Gibbs and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. The Connetquot Team, “We are (Garland) Farmers: We Know a Thing or Two, Because We’ve Read a Thing or Two,” participated in the morning battle. Each team participates in four separate rounds with each round covering two of the eight novels and each team is given twenty questions per round. The Connetquot team worked hard and competed well, earning the Team Choice Award, which is voted on by other teams. The battle fosters a love of reading and teamwork,

led by Teen Librarian, Angela Breslin and Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira along with some former battle participants coaching team members. These experiences are transformative, fostering creativity, originality and enduring bonds. E.E. The Islip School District’s SCOPE Islip Summer Explorations program, hosted at the high school this summer, offered students entering first through fifth grades an opportunity to participate in a variety of classes from sports and nature, to cooking, clay making and technology. Organized by business teacher Joe Modica, who serves as the program’s dean, Summer

Explorations was facilitated by Sherwood Elementary School nurse Ann Maria Ferry. Robin Ahlers and Karen Volkman, both teachers at Islip High School, helped to ensure a fun-filled summer with their respective courses, “LEGO Builder’s Club,” which encouraged students to use their imaginations to build structures and characters following a daily theme, and “Let’s Get Cooking,” where students

made various meals such as tacos, smoothies and chocolate chip cookie lasagna. Other program instructors included Islip Middle School teachers Sue Davis, Laura Greco and Jessica Wilkow. “No matter what class the students were involved in, they are sure to have had an exciting and educational summer,” said Modica.

Legacy of Literacy Before her graduation, recent Islip High School alumna Ashley Goveia spent developed the Early Childhood Literacy Program with two of the district’s elementary schools, Commack Road and Wing, to help inspire children of the Islip community to read. Goveia was invited to be a speaker at the Sayville Rotary Club’s annual Literacy Celebration and the Rotary District 7255 leadership meeting, and was presented with the Rotary Literacy Leadership Award for 2015 and 2016 for this project. Goveia’s interest in literacy began when she was 3 or 4 years old. “I heard on TV that there were young children who were homeless and I wanted to make them feel better by giving them my favorite books,” she said. “I collected all of my books in a blanket and dragged

them to the door, to give what I thought were the only six homeless children in the world something special. I repeatedly asked my mom when were we giving my books to the kids, until we figured out a way to do it.” They started the Legacy of Literacy program 13 years ago through local Rotary Clubs, proving thousands of free books to hundreds of children. As Goveia grew older, she continued working on these events, but also wanted to do her own projects, which led to the Islip program. “I chose to develop the Early Childhood Literacy Program because I can relate to children struggling to read, as it was my most difficult area of study, and it has been my inspiration to give to others since I was small. I wanted to inspire small children to love to read and

become lost in a good story, and I especially wanted to give them something to love that they could have their entire lives.” The process began with Goveia meeting with the elementary principals to introduce the project and to try to develop specific events tailored to their school. The events provided fellow high school students who participated with community service credit. Goveia also chose younger Interact Club members to shadow her so that the club can keep the project going after her graduation. “Literacy and community service is something I have dedicated myself to for nearly my entire life,” she said. “I know I will continue serving my community throughout my life and I hope in some small way, to inspire others to do the same.”

New York State Department of E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation (DEC) E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officer (ECO) Timothy Fay received the 2016 “Officer of the Year” award from the ShikarSafari Club International in a ceremony hosted by long-time Club member Robert Stackler, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today.

Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport. Each year the club sponsors an award for the Wildlife Conservation Police Officer of the Year in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and the territories of both nations, acknowledging the important part ECOs play in local, national,

and international wildlife conservation. ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies. He attended and graduated from the 17th Basic Academy for Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled Suffolk County enforcing New York’s Environmental Conservation Law, including investigating hunting, fishing and trapping activity, releases of petroleum, asbestos and other

The Long Island Nets and the United Way of Long Island recently held a Sort-a-Thon event at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in partnership with Target as part of the 2017 Annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign. The Sort-A-Thon featured more than 75 volunteers including Senator Elanie Phillips and Senator Kemp Hannon, along with members of their respective staffs,

Target employees, representatives of the Long Island Nets and members of Union 338. Volunteers sorted thousands of school supplies to be donated to the Uniondale School District to benefit students in need for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. The school supplies included backpacks, binders, colored pencils, notebooks, glue sticks and other useful tools that have been collected from more

than 25 drop-off locations throughout Long Island. Over the past eight years, United Way of Long Island’s Stuff-A-Bus program has provided hundreds of thousands of school supplies to Long Island students. 2017 is the first time that Stuff-ABus will be held in Nassau County. ECO Fay keeps the mission of the Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) close to his heart, and thoroughly enjoys all the aspects of the mission, from tickets and arrest, to education, and especially outreaches. He is involved in the Youth Conservation Program, Youth Waterfowl Day and other youth oriented hunting and fishing outreaches. ECO Fay maintains one of the most diverse enforcement programs in the Division. He is adept at all aspects of the Environmental Conservation Law. Additionally, he successfully networks with outside agencies and

organizations, and he actively accepts outreach projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources. ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court. ECO Fay is trained and certified in many fields of work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He

is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator Course in 2016. For the past 11 years, ECO Fay’s professional work ethic and commitment to his profession resulted in him being nominated and receiving the ShikarSafari Club International Officer of the Year award. New Swim Program The YMCA of Long Island is excited to announce the launch of a new swim lessons program for members at all Y locations beginning in September. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the YMCA will update the methodology behind its program. Registration for the YMCA of Long Island’s new swim program began August 20th, and the program will officially launch on September 10th and run through November 18th. “The YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Long Island are entirely dedicated to the safety of

our community members, which is why we found it more important than ever to update our swim program to best prepare our members with the ability to be safe around the water and swim confidently,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The new program will move away from the traditional swim training mechanisms such as floatation devices and instead focus on selfrescue skills and improved swim techniques.” The upgraded program includes three-categories: Swim Starters, Swim Basics and Swim Strokes,

through which swimmers will gain confidence and technical skill as they become highly proficient swimmers. In addition, once swimmers have completed the stages of swim, they can move onto Pathways, which are specialized tracks, including Competition, Leadership and Recreation. “This new program is designed for participants to feel safe and confident around water. It works on preventative activities such as asking permission to go into the water to working on the self-rescue benchmark skills JumpPush-Turn-Grab and Swim-

Float-Swim,” said Tracie Busch, Aquatic Director at the Patchogue Family YMCA. “As they progress with the swim basics of the program they will learn and build to competitive swim strokes. This new approach gives a more fluid progression of skills that allows swimmers to feel a sense of achievement as they progress at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.” Swim Starters introduces infants and toddlers, ages six months to

three years, to the aquatic environment and focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall

into a body of water. Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity. Softball Champions The Suffolk County Police Department’s 2nd Precinct Softball Team won its first championship in the Town of Huntington Fire Department league on Tuesday, August 22nd. The team, led by pitcher Chris Rathje, swept the Commack Fire Department team in a best of three series. Commack was the defending champions and was shell-shocked by the 2nd precinct squad which scored over 40 runs during the two-game sweep. Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay has played for the 2nd Precinct’s softball team for the last three years. “This team is comprised of

a great group of guys who work hard and constantly pick each other up, which is the definition of a true team,” said Legislator Lindsay. “Throughout the past 20 years of playing softball, I have never played alongside such a dedicated group. I am so honored to be part of this team and this championship.” Approaching the playoffs, the 2nd Precinct Softball Team finished in first place with a record of 21-7. Their dominance continued throughout the competitions, by never losing and never trailing in a game except for the 1st inning of the 2nd finals game.

Chris Rathje the 2nd Precinct’s veteran pitcher returned for the finals after suffering a leg injury in the final double header of the regular season. Rathje had great command of his pitches throughout the night, limiting walks to four intentional walks to Commack’s best hitter. He also had impressive at bats with seven hits in two games, driving in four runs and scoring five times., “I felt good on the mound and confident in our defense behind me,” said Chris Rathjie. “This was a real team effort with everyone contributing towards our victory.”

Over 50 Fair In mid-September, the Over 50 Fair will once again offer Long Islanders an opportunity to meet with businesses and nonprofits who have terrific products and services geared towards adults age 50+ and their adult children. The Over 50 Fair, in its eighth year, is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 17th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Long Island Hilton/Huntington, its new easier location, will have over 80 exhibitors and over 30 speakers including television reality favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series,

“The Bachelor,” in 2015. She will be discussing what it was like to be on the TV show and do a “Q & A.” In addition, Kimberly will be teaching a yoga class. Chef Maria Petridis was crowned a “Chopped Champion” on Food Network’s Chopped in December. Maria, of Maria’s Mediterranean Seafood & Grill in Bayside, will be doing a Greek cooking demo that is sure to be well-attended. Chef Sophie Bravo of Food Network’s Chopped Junior will be doing two demonstrations. Sophie, an adorable 11 year-old, will be doing a meringue class as well as a cake decorating with fondant class. Others include talks on reiki, astrology, hot

flashes, trusts, reinventing yourself, knitting, a country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates events at area malls under the business name Specialty Connections. “Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest. There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. The purpose of the Over 50 Fair is to show people where to find them.”
