Building Dedication
On Monday, August 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended a ceremony during which the Bellport Hagerman
East Patchogue Alliance (BHEP) building on Montauk Highway in Bellport was dedicated in honor of former BHEP director, Helen Martin.
Helen became the Director of the Bellport Senior Nutrition Program in 1975 and, in 1992, was a founding member of the INN Friendship, a soup
kitchen that serves meals every Tuesday night at St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church in East Patchogue. In 1983, Helen became the first Executive Director of the BHEP, a not-for profit organization that serves the community by working to provide housing assistance, job counseling, and support services to homeless or at-risk of homelessness families in the Bellport/ East Patchogue area. BHEP provides services for first time homeowners, food and nutrition programs, senior programs, utilities
assistance, and housing rehabilitation programs. A strong and dedicated Director, Helen, a single mother, also raised six children on her own while working for the Alliance. In December of 2011, Helen officially retired from the BHEP Alliance, but continues to be a viable force for change in her community. “Helen’s strong leadership has made such a positive impact on so many people in the community,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine. “Dedicating this building in her name is a
well-deserved honor and I was happy to be part of this very special event.” “Helen Martin is the type of selfless leader that we want young people to emulate,” stated Councilwoman Connie Kepert. “Helen loves her community and knows its issues and has worked tirelessly to identify and dedicate resources to resolve those issues. The BHEP building, which is now dedicated in her honor, is a fitting tribute to a great leader,” stated Councilwoman Kepert.

A few weeks
ago, a sea turtle was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. Dose Of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,
newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts
today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

Since training takes place in the summer when many families are vacationing, we are really struggling to get enough volunteers every night.” A typical practice session includes four special needs riders, one certified instructor and anywhere from four to 12 support volunteers. The ranch hosts two to three lessons each week night and an additional four lessons on the weekends to accommodate all of the equestrian athletes. This heavy load has been managed by a very small army of diligent volunteers, led by one amazing 13year old, who spends a minimum of 21 hours a week helping the athletes. “On September 7th, Saddle Rock’s 62 athletes will travel to HorseAbility in Old Westbury to compete in the regional Special Olympics New York Horse Show. “This event is a
huge deal for our athletes and they depend on the volunteers who have helped them train to get through the competition with as little stress as possible,” says Dell’Aira. One challenge these Olympians have to overcome is that they will not be able to bring their lesson horses to the show, so the support of our regular volunteers is even more important. “The program is very challenging to manage,” Dell’Aira commented. “But when our athletes compete and stand on the podium with their medals and ribbons and huge smiles on their faces, it makes every moment of the stress worthwhile.” Saddle Rock Ranch is always looking for volunteers for their community therapeutic riding and Special Olympics New York programs. For the ninth consecutive year, Saddle Rock Ranch, a service of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) is serving as a training site for Special Olympics New York Equestrian athletes. Every year this training event is facilitated by PATHcertified instructors and several teenage volunteers. The site received double the amount of annual registrations this year. This has made the support of these local volunteers more critical than ever – and they have risen to meet the challenge. Saddle Rock Ranch has been hosting Special Olympics New York equestrian training since 2005. For the first few years the nearly 16-acre ranch has accommodated 25 – 30 riders in four weekly sessions each season. “This year our registration exploded,” explained Julie Dell’Aira, Therapeutic Riding Program Coordinator. “We

Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center has taken further strides to get their dogs adopted with the help of a new training program, implemented in May 2013. Selected dogs are trained by the guidelines of the Canine Good Citizen test; a test that demonstrates that a dog can behave appropriately in a public setting, around people, other dogs and distractions. The training is conducted by a group of volunteers led by professional dog trainer Jen Towers of Lead the Pack Dog Training. Under her guidance, and with the help of shelter employees, the group has successfully found homes for 10 out of the 15 dogs that have participated in the program. “This program is so important for a shelter dog because it significantly improves his or her chance for adoption. Having even the slightest bit of training gives that dog a big advantage over others that don’t,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “This gives us the opportunity to really showcase the dogs that have been otherwise overlooked.” The dogs selected for the program range in breed, age, size, and duration of time they’ve been waiting at the shelter. Lucy, a five year old Pit Bull mix who has been waiting at the shelter close to three years for her new family, has become the star of the training program. “These dogs are all beautiful dogs that unfortunately get

Three seniors from East Islip High School’s Class of 2013 – Patrick Ferriss and brothers Michael Petralia and Vincent Petralia – participated in the school’s summer graduation ceremony on August 27th, with their proud families and friends cheering them on. (A fourth new graduate, Owen O’Reilly III, was unable to attend.) As the familiar strains of Pomp And Circumstance began, the young men marched into the high school’s library wearing red robes and mortarboard caps, before standing for the Pledge of Allegiance. District and school representatives in attendance included Principal William Brennen; Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi; three members of the Board of Education – President Louis F. Raffone, Vice President Philip Montuori Sr. and trustee Kim G. Phillips; Susan Kosser, the district’s assistant to the
superintendent for student support services; Stephen Restivo, the director of physical education and health; Sarajean Anderson, the director of humanities; Janet Jones, the district’s new director of math and science; Israel Malinowitzer, the director of careers and student services; and East Islip High School Assistant Principals Nicholas Bilotti and Michael Thorley. Noting the fact that they had graduated from East Islip High School was of paramount importance, not when the commencement ceremony took place, Principal Brennen told the trio to be proud of their achievement. He also acknowledged the need for a graduation ceremony for every student. “When you reach these milestones, there needs to be a ceremony,” he said. “It’s very important.” “The future is bright and your determination
is very admirable,” said Superintendent Rozzi, congratulating the three graduates and welcoming their families to the celebration. After thanking their parents for providing an outstanding foundation for success, Rozzi urged the young men, “Always strive for excellence, follow your heart, and find time for family and friends.” Saluting their will to succeed, President Raffone said, “It’s only when you quit and give up that you lose,” then presented each of the three smiling new graduates with diplomas, to the cheers of their families and friends. Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Assemblyman Ramos, the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) and Bishop Donald Hudson of Common Ground Church of Central Islip to tour the Suffolk County Youth Police Academy and receive $3,000 from Assemblyman Ramos for ongoing efforts to expose youth from underserved communities to the Suffolk County Police Department. “In an effort to ensure a diverse applicant pool and representation within the Suffolk County Police Department, this week-long training for youth between the ages of fifteen through eighteen was specifically designed to reach out to and attract ethnically diverse students,” said County Executive Bellone. “Allowing students to have first-hand experience of police recruit training and
interaction with police personnel will help youth to consider a career in law enforcement. I thank Assemblyman Phil Ramos for his commitment to the youth of our communities and for providing the opportunity for students who may have not had access to funds to participate in this most invaluable law enforcement program.” The program provided an opportunity for those students who have thought about a career in law enforcement or those students who believe that they would never be considered for a position as a Police Recruit the opportunity to experience five days of an actual Police Academy where students take part in similar training as a Suffolk County Police Recruit. “I’m excited for the opportunity that more children from underserved
communities are having to experience firsthand the inner workings of the Suffolk County Police Department. Historically, people of color have been underrepresented in the police ranks and the youth police academy,” said Assemblyman Phil Ramos.
