Organize Your Locker regarding the condition of desks. Lockers are an entirely different story. Students are solely responsible for organizing and maintaining their lockers and may be tasked with following a few rules set forth by the school. Students may overlook the importance of organized lockers, and in such instances lockers can easily become disaster areas. But a messy locker can add unnecessary stress to a school day. Getting lockers organized requires some effort and upkeep. • Color code the locker. Grouping subjects by color can make it easier to find notebooks, textbooks and folders in a locker. If materials necessary for math class are colored in red, students can quickly find these materials en route to class. • Remove trash. Remove

Of Deadlines & Days Off By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What to write... It’s 8 p.m. on deadline day, and I have no column prepared. Nothing exciting going on, no inspiration to speak of, nothing. Makes for stimulating reading, right? Well, I am preparing to go away on vacation, so that’s something. But in the midst of finishing up and making sure all the loose ends are taken care of, I somehow lost the inspiration for my own column along the way. Not that I often spend much time contemplating it, but I at least have the option
of putting a little more thought into it. Today, not so much. Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too? And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails… Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or
two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore. It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe someone out there has discovered the great secret to dropping out of the rat race. We all have to come back to reality eventually. But let’s at least try to make the break worthwhile.

Many students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Transportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approximately 4 billion miles each year. The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles. Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, especially those new to school buses, may find the bus fun and unique and not pay attention to simple safety rules. But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines. • Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives. • Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see pedestrians. • Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists. • Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner. • Promptly find a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus should take their seat without making a fuss.

Technology is an important part of many people’s daily lives. Devices like computers, tablets, smartphones, and video games are now so widely used that it’s hard to imagine a life without email, the Internet or text messages. Even children are proving adept at using technology, which can be a valuable tool for educators attempting to reach today’s youngsters. Digital learning is learning facilitated by technology. Not only can digital learning be done in the classroom, but also it can extend to home life as children continue to explore lessons through hands-on interaction with digital devices. According to data from Project Tomorrow’s “Speak Up” study, an initiative of the nation’s leading education nonprofit organization, students are frustrated with the lack of technology in their schools and by the lack of sophisticated use of that technology. The study indicates that students want more of the following: • Social-based learning • Tools that increase untethered learning • Development of and connection to a personal network of expert resources • A digitally rich learning environment Students acclimated to technology at home are not content to merely rely on textbooks or CDs in the classroom. They’re more interested in interactive, Web-based tools that enhance communication and collaboration. As a result of this shifting landscape, parents should expect to see more lessons and homework involving interactive technology. To make this transition go more smoothly, teachers and parents can work together to ensure kids are making the most of the exciting developments in education. The following are just a

That only takes away space for the stuff kids do need for class. • Group according to schedule. In addition to employing a color-coding system, students also can group books by daily schedule. Organize the locker based on which classes are held in the morning and afternoon. This makes it less likely that students will forget supplies they need for class. • Think about extra accessories. Lockers have the basics, which are usually a shelf and a hook for coats. All sorts of locker accessories exist to customize the interior. An extra shelf may be helpful for storing books or smaller supplies. Look into a message board or more hooks that can be hung on the inside of the door. Figure out what your child can use to keep items from piling up on the floor. • Develop a maintenance plan. Old assignments may begin to accumulate inside a locker. This can be remedied by maintaining a cleaning schedule for a locker. A few minutes each week can keep a locker clean and clear of clutter.

Make School Lunch Healthier The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among schoolaged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions. Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest of the day. Children who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired.
As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the United States National School Lunch Program was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally sound choices, as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for lunch. America’s school menus were altered to be healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables while limiting calories. Despite some controversy through the years, including some students saying the smaller portions and food choices aren’t always satisfying, states suffering from high child obesity rates have seen marked improvements. Canada is one of the few leading industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement
healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a wellfunded national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial government funding and corporate donations. Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. • Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and
vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. • Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy levels up during school
and make kids less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps. • Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world of difference. Kids may not notice a change in texture or flavor, and many of kids’ favorite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. • Remember, beverages count, too. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed
in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages. Offering healthy school lunches is an important step to raising healthy kids. New guidelines and offerings make it easier for kids to get the nutrition they need for their growing bodies.

Diabetes Self-Management The Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and Legislator Monica Martinez invite residents who have diabetes to attend a free program that will enable them to manage their diabetes. The program, conducted by the Department of Health Services in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, comprises four classes that cover suggestions for keeping blood sugar in target range, choosing a healthful meal plan and balancing food, exercise and medications. The Brentwood program will be conducted in Spanish only. “These classes arm participants with the knowledge and skills they need to properly manage their diabetes and enable them to enjoy an improved quality of life,” said Bellone. According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014, 21 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with diabetes and another 8.1 people, nearly 28 percent the U.S. population, are undiagnosed. Diabetes is the most rapidly growing
chronic disease of our time, affecting one out of every 12 adults in New York. It is the leading cause of new blindness, kidney disease and amputation and contributes greatly to heart disease and stroke. Minority populations are at high risk, especially those who are African American, Latino, Native American and Asian American. “Diabetes causes more deaths a year than cancer and AIDS combined,” said Legislator Gregory. “I encourage my constituents who have diabetes to take the necessary steps to keep their blood sugar under control and thereby avoid the serious health conditions which can accompany this disease.” “Diabetes is an urgent health problem in the Latino community,” said Legislator Monica R. Martinez. “The rate of diabetes among Latinos is almost double those of nonLatinos. This course will afford our residents with the opportunity to gain information that can help them prevent or delay the onset of complications.” Health Commissioner James Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, said, “Small changes in lifestyle

Rebuilding Complete and the operator, Route 110 Restaurant Equipment of Farmingdale, owned by Sal Cataldo and Christine Kim, invested approximately $50,000, in equipping and furnishing the restaurant. Sunset Restaurant offers everything from hot dogs to hand-made pizzas to flounder, with live entertainment on many evenings. The restaurant also offers a full
breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Patrons can dine on the sheltered deck or beneath umbrellas and potted palm trees. “Islip Beach has long been an important part of our community,” noted Councilman Flotteron. “Good government was at the forefront of every decision that brought us to today as we mark the completion of this massive reconstruction project.” “We almost lost Islip Beach to privatization, but folks
from OSICA and KIC stepped up and made it what it is today, an ‘Oasis by the Bay’ a spot that money cannot buy, beloved by young and old,’ said longtime community leader Kay Poro Erwood. In addition to the full-service restaurant, Islip Beach’s new concession features handicapped bathrooms, showers and ramps and is equipped with an energy efficient lighting system. Ramps, railings, and boardwalks are made from Ipe wood, a dense Brazilian hardwood that is used for its durability, performance and density, and is naturally fire, insect, moisture and movement resistant. “We’re grateful to the Town for allowing us the opportunity to operate this restaurant on this beautiful beach,” said Cataldo, who has been in the restaurant business for 30 years. He previously operated Oceanside Café in Oceanside, Old Brooklyn Pizza in Bellmore and Horizons in Mineola. His partner, Kim, operated an Italian restaurant in Denver and formerly owned Solitero’s Deli in Commack. The Sunset Cafe offers a complete breakfast menu, including blueberry pancakes, from 8 to 11 a.m. and a full menu of freshly prepared seafood, salads, chicken, pasta, burritos and pizza, as well as hotdogs and hamburgers until 9 p.m. On Wednesday evenings, live music geared to senior visitors is offered. Islip Beach, donated to the Town by the Havermeyer Family, opened in 1960.

Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and Town Board members were joined recently by New York State Senator Phil Boyle and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi in celebrating the last piece of the $1.76 million rebuilding of Islip Beach, ravaged by Super Storm Sandy, with an official ribbon cutting ceremony held at the beach’s new full-service restaurant/concession stand, Sunset Restaurant, which opened earlier this summer. “When we initially saw the damage at Islip Beach, many thought what we are here to celebrate today would never be possible,” said Supervisor Croci. “The Town’s commitment to its residents, along with the support of the Parks Department and the concessionaire, tackled the reconstruction of this Town Treasure. Today, we are pleased to say, that with the official reopening of the concession stand, the restoration of Islip Beach is complete and something that all Town residents can and enjoy and be proud of.” Super Storm Sandy uprooted the beach’s concession stand and a pavilion from their foundations. Boardwalks and decks were destroyed and the beach and bay were littered with storm debris. Despite a harrowing winter, Islip Beach re-opened last July, less than one year after Super Storm devastated the popular destination. The Town was committed to restoring the beach and giving it back to residents in time for summer 2013, and only a concession remained. The Islip Town Board subsequently approved an agreement with the concession operator in March 2014,

When you speak to Steven Parrinelli today, you sense a smart, confident young man who is carefully selecting his next moves to achieve his goal of a career in medicine. But as a grammar school student at St. Patrick School in Huntington, Steven hadn’t selected a direction for his life. In fact, according to Steven; “My breakout years didn’t come until I was a high school student.” Parents That Believed In Catholic School Like many of the students in Catholic elementary schools, Steven started in elementary school because his parents “are strong believers in Catholic education”. The elementary school they selected for Steven, St. Patrick’s in Huntington, reinforced the values they lived at home and was able to provide a great deal of individual attention to Steven’s learning needs. Steven remembers St. Patrick’s for its small size, for the many friends he made during his time there, and for the strong feeling of community
within St. Patrick Parish and School. “St. Patrick’s provided an excellent educational foundation, and I was a good student, but I hadn’t yet gotten competitive about my grades.” said Steven. The “Breakout” Years Like the overwhelming majority of Catholic elementary school students, Steven elected to go to Catholic high school and like the most of the students he got his first choice of schools: St. Dominic’s in Oyster Bay. It was after mid-term exams in Steven’s first year at St. Dominic High School that he had what he considers his ‘breakout’. The chance to be on the Honor Roll at St. Dominic’s gave him the incentive. The additional recognition each trimester of a Principal’s List Luncheon made it personal. The individual attention he received and the chance to know the teachers from his AP (Advanced Placement) classes personally were some of Steven’s favorite parts of the high school experience.

One Individual Stands Out While the interpersonal relationships Steven enjoyed with his teachers and members of the administration were powerful incentives, one particular relationship stands out. As Steven puts it; “My Global History and US History teacher, Mr. Drysielski, taught me the most valuable skill I mastered in high school.” “He taught me how to express myself better in writing.” Steven continued. “Being a better writer has helped me everywhere.” Looking Forward After looking at various college options, Steven was invited by the University of Scranton to visit their campus. In Steven’s words; “I felt like I belonged here.” The manageable size of the school, the friendly people, and a strong science program were the ‘selling points’. That and the Dean’s Scholarship which will fund half of Steven’s college were all considerations in selecting the University of Scranton. “I am considering a career in medicine,” said Steven. “The strong science program at the University of Scranton will help me prepare for medical school.” My discussion with Steven ended with his rationale for wanting to become a doctor; “I like to help people.” We couldn’t agree more! Steven is a fine example of the academically prepared and spiritually grounded students graduating from Long Island’s Catholic schools.
Students learn lessons each day. While many of these lessons pertain to their coursework, kids pick up much more than book smarts from school, where kids first learn to cultivate friendships and build lasting relationships. In addition to a new curriculum, new teachers and new schedules, kids also might make new friends once a school year begins. While some familiar faces carry through from grade to grade, chances are youngsters will meet new students who will soon
become good friends. While many kids find it easy to make new friends, others might need some assistance so they can make the most of opportunities to socialize and form friendships that might last a lifetime. • Offer opportunities for socialization. Children should be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside of the classroom where peer pressure might not be so prevalent. Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date. Unstructured time to play or get to know
each other is a great way to establish friendships. Invite new children over each time to see which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not pushing a friendship on your child. • Discover common interests. One of the quickest ways to build friendships is through common interests, says Kirk Martin, a behavioral therapist and author. Ready For Kindergarten?
enrolling youngsters before they’re ready could have repercussions for years to come. Students who begin kindergarten before they’re ready may fall behind, resulting in frustration that turns them off from school. With such significant stakes, parents may want to answer a few questions and look for these generalized kindergarten readiness clues before enrolling their youngsters in school. • Does my child have solid oral-language skills? Language is more than drilling letters and sight words into a child’s head through repetition. Language allows kids to share in new experiences and lessons that will expand their vocabularies.
The more kids experience, the more their curiosity grows. This opens up opportunities for discussion about a variety of topics and introduces words and concepts that may be new and exciting to children. Research indicates one of the best predictors of eventual reading success is a welldeveloped oral vocabulary in kindergarten. Children will retain words if they hear them enough and if they’re used in context and conversation. • Can my child listen to and follow instructions? Kindergarten students will be introduced to many foreign things, and some kinds may be in a school environment for the very first time. Teachers will
be issuing instructions and seeking cooperation from the class. To keep up with peers and lessons, kindergarteners will need to be able to remain quiet for extended periods of time, listen to instructions and then properly act on them. • Is my son or daughter excited about learning? Some children cannot wait to go to kindergarten, especially those who are excited at the prospect of going to the same school as their older siblings. Enthusiasm about school and an eagerness to learn and discover new things are indicative of kindergarten readiness. A child does not need to have mastery over every skill just yet, but taking the initiative
to try and ask questions is a good start to successful learning. • Does my child want to be independent? The phrases “I’ll do it myself” or “I’ll try” can be music to a kindergarten teacher’s ears. Parents may be in a rush and find it easier to dress kids or get them snacks. But doing everything for kids puts them at a disadvantage. Independent streaks can help kids adjust to school. Kindergarteners may have to go to the bathroom and wash up independently. They also may have to fasten buttons, open up lunches and hang up coats. Children who cannot handle such tasks may struggle to adjust to a school environment.
• Can my child recognize basic letters and numbers? Children entering kindergarten should know most letters by sight and be able to count to 10. Preparing for kindergarten can be fun and does not require flash cards or homework. Encourage kids to count objects in the world around them or do some preliminary reading by recognizing letters on signs at stores or places in the neighborhood. Kindergarten readiness is determined by a variety of factors, including age, school assessment, enthusiasm about learning, and signs of independence.
