Teams of second graders at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently worked to open temporary class stores at “Ms. Mercurio’s Market” during their unit on money. The students began by choosing store names, organizing their store rules and displaying the rules on store banners, which were then hung up in preparation for the next phase of the project. After they finished the planning phase of their store, they visited the “warehouse” to decide which items they wanted to sell at each store. Each team member was responsible for paying teacher Patrice Mercurio for every item, using their own real coins brought from home. Next, the children set

On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk Returns At Jones Beach State Park Hundreds of walkers, from brain aneurysm survivors to their families and supporters, are expected to attend Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 21. Proceeds will benefit both organizations, raising funds to support essential research. “Thanks to hundreds of participants, we have raised $700,000 since the walk’s inception and it continues to grow steadily each year,” said David Chalif, MD, director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “It is a time for brain aneurysm survivors and their families to celebrate life and also a time to remember those who have lost a loved one to a brain aneurysm.” At this year’s walk, one of the guest speakers will
be Greg McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, NY, who lost his older brother to a ruptured brain aneurysm last year. Other guest speakers will include two brain aneurysm survivors: Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park. One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm. The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation. Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. The fee is $25 through September 9; $30 afterward. Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. T-shirts will be handed out on a firstcome, first-serve basis. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and the Town of Islip will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets on Saturday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brookwood Hall located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip, NY. Although the clinic is available to all county residents, the quantity of vaccine is limited and available only while supplies last. All dogs must be on leashes and all
cats and ferrets must be in carriers. Rabies, a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies. Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection. New York State and Suffolk County laws
require that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinating pets not only provides protection for the animals but also acts as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people. Although no raccoons have tested positive for the rabies virus in Suffolk County since 2009, three to six percent of the bats that are tested annually are positive for rabies.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services recommends the following precautions to protect your pets and your family from possible exposure to rabies: · Do not feed, touch or approach wild animals, or stray dogs or cats. · Be sure your pet dogs, cats and ferrets as well as horses and other livestock animals are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. · Pets too young to

Town Honors Local Hero An off-duty security guard was hailed at the Town of Islip August Town Board meeting, for helping police apprehend a suspect who allegedly robbed a local 7-11 recently. Gary Stack, of Holbrook, was sitting in his car in the parking lot of a nearby 7-11 after picking up a cup of coffee inside the store around 6 am, when he saw a man run out of the store. Seconds later, a 7-11 employee burst through the doors yelling for help, that the store had just been robbed. Stack,
a private security officer, followed the suspect who was running on foot to his getaway car. He chased the car while using his hand’s FREE device to call the police. It wasn’t too long before the driver of the getaway car stopped, exited with his hands up. Seconds later, the suspect jumped from the car and offered Gary the proceeds from the cash register, in exchange for not calling the police. Within minutes, the police arrived and Gary directed the officers to the woods,
where the robber was apprehended. “Gary is truly deserving of this honor. He is a trained professional, whose quick response helped apprehend a suspect. He is an example of the selfless acts we’ve seen time and time again here in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter Gary works for private clients throughout the Town of Islip, and is an active member of the Parkland Civic Association in Holbrook.
