New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selfless donors who answer the call to donate. Participating blood services reported the number of people becoming donors and giving blood for the first time decreased by 27.6% since 2005. In the United States, there is a particular need for new donors with O negative blood, the universal blood type, and donors of minority backgrounds such as Latino/Hispanic

Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing their event to the Big Apple! The first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on the “Flight of a Lifetime” next year on their inaugural trip on April 29th, 2017. Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started the planning process and are looking for volunteers and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www. BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning. Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take 75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the spring. These spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. “The purpose of today’s announcement is to spread

The Power of Positivity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Keep Islip Clean volunteers do a superb job of improving environmental health with litter cleanup projects held throughout the year, but the upcoming International Coastal Cleanup offers a rare opportunity to turn these local efforts into worldwide action. Volunteers concerned about the marine environment are encouraged to register for the ICC through KIC and learn how to accurately note important details about litter and debris

The information gleaned from local waterway cleanups will be added to similar reports collected from around the world as part of a global initiative to track pollution trends. and noted that developing the minds of students is an educator’s most important job. “The children we educate today are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said. Guest speaker New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia discussed the changes made and ongoing reviews of the Common Core Learning Standards, state curriculum, student assessments and teacher evaluations. In terms of student assessments, Elia said she believes that “assessments have a role in education and can work as an important tool to educate our children.” She also noted that the state is working to be more transparent by releasing 75 percent of the test questions and providing a

parent-friendly assessment report. In addition, the commissioner addressed teacher evaluations, which she said are now being reviewed by educators. “You want evaluations that can help teachers move forward,” she said. New York State Regent Roger Tilles presented his views on the demographic and geographic issues resulting in gaps in education and graduation rates. “Districts are asked to overcome issues that are often beyond our schools,” he said. “During my visits to high-need districts, I have noticed that what brings students to school are the programs we often cut from schools, and I hope we can turn that around.”

The event provided the opportunity for newly appointed superintendents and newly elected school board trustees to mingle and share ideas with fellow educators from school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Recent East Islip High School graduates Donald Ahlers, Joe Gresh and Anthony Pagano – all students in the school’s career development program – spent a rewarding senior year as interns at the local Lee’s Auto Body, refurbishing a special car for donation to the school. Showing great attention to detail, the students learned technologies including wiring, paint stripping, gluing and welding while working under the guidance of job coach Scott Hoelldobler and Lee’s owner Gary Teich. In the internship program with Lee’s, the students spent an hour a day, twice weekly during the school year, working at the auto body shop. The school’s connection with Lee’s started out small three years ago, but has proven valuable, according to Hoelldobler. “My colleague Kelly Kern asked Gary Teich if he would be willing to help out the East Islip career development program,” said Hoelldobler. “He said he would give it a try. Things worked out so well that he hired one of the students part-time at his shop after the student graduated that June.” At the beginning of the last school year, Lee’s purchased a damaged 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. When Teich, a 1982 East Islip alumnus and vice president of the East Islip Chamber of Commerce, was informed that the school was looking for a car for its security guards, he decided to turn the car into a project for the students that Lee’s could give to the school. “Throughout the school year, the boys worked on the car every week,” said Hoelldobler. “The kids took doors off of another Grand Marquis and put them on the donor car. They also changed out the locks so that one key would fit all of the locks. They changed out the taillights,

and hooked up the light bar on the roof. They welded and sanded parts and used body filler. They participated in every aspect of putting a car together. ” “The kids worked very hard, and the results show it,” said Teich. “This was a rewarding project on so many levels for all involved. Scott and Kelly do such a great job with the students, showing them patience, perseverance and guidance. I think we have all benefitted from their values. We are so proud of Joe, Anthony and Donald for all their efforts.”

The emblem on the doors and hood was designed by Matthew Teich, Gary’s son and a member of East Islip High School’s Class of 2016. Hoelldobler noted that the three career development students helped with the creative process, providing feedback for tweaking the image. The “100” on the car represented Lee’s Auto Body’s 100th year in business, and its red and white paint job not only reflects the school colors, but holds special meaning for Teich. He chose a 1982 “Corvette Red” for the stripe

Serving Those Who Served Eighth-grader Alexa Sanchez, a member of East Islip Middle School’s Builders Club, recently cooked a special Italian dinner with her family for veterans at Project9Line. “The veterans at Project9Line truly appreciated that the Sanchez family remembered them and

cared enough to prepare a meal for them,” said Project9Line music instructor Dennis O’Donnell. “Eyes widened as we set the table, and smiles abounded as they enjoyed the offering. As a father to a soldier, I thank them for showing the veterans that they care.” “It was truly a pleasure

and an honor to be able to give back a little something to those that have sacrificed so much for our great country,” said Sanchez, who will attend East Islip High School in September. “It was definitely something that everyone should do to help out those who have served.”

Hoelldobler believes that the value of the program goes beyond mere mechanical experience. “I hope that I have not only been a job coach for Anthony, Donald and Joe, but rather a life coach and mentor,” he said. “I have watched these guys develop into fine young men, each growing in different ways. And Gary doesn’t only teach the kids about auto body work. From day one, he covered all aspects of work ethic, respect for others and taking pride in your own work. He has taught the kids that by always learning more, they become more employable, and that paying attention has rewards.” Hoelldobler sees successful programs such as this one as a symbol of the district and community’s solidarity and support of its students. “It is truly wonderful to see the East Islip business community give these folks a chance to contribute,” he said. “As I have said many times at various chamber of commerce meetings, ‘If you give these kids a chance, I assure you that two things will probably happen. First, you will be thrilled with their work, and second, you will probably get more out of this experience than the kids will.’ Everyone can contribute to their community, if given the opportunity and the right level of support. In my opinion, East Islip is showing everyone else how to do it right.”

Twenty-three students are headed back to school this fall with a unique conversation starter after participating in the 2016 Suffolk County Legislature Page Program. Now in its second year, this summer’s Page Program drew students from a variety of schools and majors, culminating in a graduation ceremony on August 5th. Over the course of 11 weeks this summer, Pages got a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of local government by working in legislative offices, visiting various county departments and participating in the legislative process. “These Pages were a bright, enthusiastic bunch who brought a lot of character to the Legislature this summer,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Each of the Pages brought something special to the table, and, just as it is in real politics, they had different ideas and interests but worked together to find common ground and ultimately, success. Suffolk County is lucky to have such innovative young leaders. We wish them well in their future endeavors.” “I’m very proud of all the hard work the Pages have done this year,” said Minority Leader and 14th District Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. “They are a very smart, hardworking and determined group of young leaders who are going to make great strides wherever they go in this world.” Pages this year toured various county facilities, including the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Riverhead Correctional Facility. In honor of this new resident, Long Island Game Farm invited all fans to take part in a naming contest for the baby. The winning name, Ethel, which means “noble” in Old English, was announced at the Camel Naming Party on Saturday, August 6th. Limited tickets are available at the Gift Shop for $6, which includes food and gives each person the opportunity to pet and hand-feed the animals. Feeding opportunities are subject to the camels’ appetite and tickets will be available at the front gate and the souvenir stand. Though camels are thought of as being inherently wild animals, they were domesticated thousands of years ago by perfume traders looking for a method of transportation. They eventually went on to become the primary source of transport for people throughout Asia and Africa, much like a horse in Europe and the Americas. For many centuries, they have also been relied on for shade, milk, meat, wool and hides and are

still used in many desert locations to pull ploughs, turn waterwheels and transport people and goods along routes inaccessible to motor vehicles. Camels have a reputation of being ill-tempered, moody creatures that spit and kick, but they are actually very patient and intelligent. With a max height of more than six feet and weight of over 1,500 pounds, these gentle giants can live to be as old as 40. Contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps, which are actually a mound of fatty tissue from which the animal draws energy when food is difficult to find. They do, however, also require little water if their regular diet contains good, moisture-rich plants and can withstand severe dehydration as their unique metabolism enables them to store the water in their bloodstream. Steps to Choosing the Right Pre-school Kindergarten used to mark a child’s first foray into formal education, but pre-school has now taken up that mantle for many students. Some parents may recall their own pre-school experiences, mostly remembering extended moments of play and more monitored fun inside the school. But as the world of education has become more competitive, and students are required to meet certain standards at even earlier grade levels than before, pre-school has undergone its own transformation.

While parents who hope to enroll their students in pre-school may have to choose between a play- or academic-based curriculum, there are other factors to consider as well. Is proximity to your home important? Some parents prefer that their children’s pre-schools be close to home, while others want a school closer to their office. If your commute to work is long, then keep in mind that children will spend more time at a pre-school close to

home, which can cost more and reduce the amount of time parents and their children spend together. Should the school be faith-based? Religious organizations frequently offer their own faith-based preschool programs. Parents will have to decide if they want a faith-based curriculum for their young children.

Are pre- and post-care services available? A school that has flexible hours may be appealing to some. This enables parents to drop off and pick up children according to their own work schedules or in coordination with school hours for other children in the family. Visit the school and assess the

The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come: Ask kids to jot down their interests.

Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a schoolsponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they find it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their image in the eyes of college

admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a college application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. Ask around. Ask neighbors or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great

resources, and school officials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesitant to sign up for an activity because they are shy, sign up with them. Volunteer organizations are typically family-friendly, and kids might be more likely to come out of their shells if they sign up with their parents or siblings. As kids grow more comfortable with an activity, they will want to get more involved even if mom and dad don’t have the time. Parents can employ various strategies to help kids find activities they can be passionate about for years to come.
