In an effort to expose students to diversity among their peers, 40 students from Amityville Memorial High School visited Islip High School to participate in a cultural exchange program. Islip’s students had previously
visited Amityville for a similar event in December 2016. To kick off the cultural exchange, the Amityville and Islip students enjoyed a breakfast and participated in various icebreaker activities. Students from
the two schools were paired, and the Amityville students shadowed the Islip students and attended classes throughout the day. The event concluded with both sets of students sharing their experiences with the group.

In an effort to give back to their community and ensure that elementary students are ready to begin a successful school year in September, members of Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club recently volunteered their time to create backto-school care packages for students in need throughout the district’s
seven elementary schools. As a result of the effort, the club filled 36 backpacks with crayons, rulers, notebooks, folders and glue sticks. In order to raise funds for the school supplies, students held after-school pizza sales during the school year, a fundraiser at Crazy Crepe Café of Ronkonkoma, and sold

School Board Members, which was held at the Bourne Mansion in Oakdale on August 10th. SCOPE provides a vast array of services to school districts, including before
and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and staff professional development. The event provided a networking opportunity
for new and returning school superintendents and board of education trustees and other professionals who work closely with the education system. SCOPE Executive
Director George L. Duffy urged those in attendance to utilize and benefit from the many programs and services SCOPE provides. He also introduced all newly installed school
board members and new superintendents, and wished them success in their positions. Lorraine Deller,
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the debut of a new mobile application tool that offers food service managers the convenience to undergo food safety training in Suffolk County. This new application will be offered by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services as a portable extension of its award-winning online Food Manager’s Course. Currently, the application is available free of charge on Google Play and will expand to the Apple Store beginning the week of August 21st. “This is an important tool in the county’s Food Protection Program that uses new technology to
educate workers in the food service industry while preventing food borne illness,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I commend our county workforce who was instrumental in the creation of this mobile application so that we can offer training in a more efficient manner.” All food service establishments regulated by the Suffolk County Department of Health are required to have a current certified individual on their premises during all hours of operation. A valid food protection/ food safety certificate issued by an approved entity must be posted in public view in all food
establishments regulated by the Department. The Food Manager’s Course mobile application was created with $70,000 in federal funding through a Cooperative Agreement with the United States Food and Drug Administration that encourages innovation by local, state and tribal regulatory agencies to continuously improve Food Protection Programs and conform to voluntary national standards. The application is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Suffolk County was the first Health Department in New York State to require mandatory food safety training beginning in 1977. More than 106,000
Food Managers have been certified since the course’s inception. Students who successfully complete the course are issued a certificate that must be renewed every three years. Certificate holders who register for renewal within 90 days following expiration of their certificates are eligible for the two half-day renewal course. While the online and mobile course content are free, in order to obtain a food manager’s certificate an individual must take an in-person exam at the County Department of Health Services’ Bureau of Public Health Protection in Yaphank. Exams are
offered on a regular basis. Individuals who download the mobile application and wish to take the exam and receive a certificate are charged $50, plus a small $0.88 credit card handling fee. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services also offers a free online Food Manager’s Course that satisfies the Food Manager certificate requirement for all food establishments while allowing an individual to take the class at their convenience. The course consists of 20 modules that address various food safety topics, with a short quiz that follows each module. Successfully answering the quiz questions allows an
individual to advance to the next module. All modules must be completed within 45 days of registering for the course. After completing all modules, he or she will be prompted to sign up for a test date and can register here. Following completion of the online course, individuals who take an in-person exam will be charged $50. Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture
the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.

This weekend will be hosted on the SJB campus and show off their recently renovated library and turf field. The festivities will kick off on Saturday, September 30th with a warm welcome back reception throughout the entire school for all alumni with special regards and celebrations for the classes of ‘72, ‘77, ‘82, ‘87, ‘92, ‘97, ‘02, ‘07, ’12. The reception is being hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations and will take a new spin on the traditional reunion. Christina Spera-Bartlett listed all of the class choice names for each grade on a PowerPoint slide so all the students could vote on a final grade choice crayon name. “We used a very complex voting system of colored square papers that corresponded to the name of the crayon they wanted,”
said Spera-Bartlett. “They had a lot of fun brainstorming ideas and during the voting process.” The students’ creative and innovative name ideas included “Shattered Ice,” “Bluejay,” “Blue Gusher” and “Blueberry Cloud.” The final name of the crayon will be announced in early September.

The Friends of Mercy Medical Center 36th Annual Golf Classic will be held on Thursday, September 14th, at the Garden City Country Club. The event will honor Donald H. Regan, a consultant in sales and portfolio risk. A Rockville Centre resident for over thirty years, Don endeavors to improve his community. While Don has displayed financial talent throughout his career he is even more dedicated to his philanthropic work. Don came to Mercy over 20 years ago spearheading
several projects including the Mercy Fund drive in the 1990’s. He is a devoted board member of the Friends of Mercy Medical Center and has worked with the Friends to provide millions in support for the medical center. Don has been on the Board of Swim Across America, Nassau Suffolk since 2001. His philanthropic work also includes supporting the De Lasalle School in Freeport, Habitat for Humanity and the Harlem Children’s Zone, as well as being on the educational advisory boards for Kent State’s
financial engineering graduate program, and the advisory committee for the entrepreneurial portfolio management at Holy Cross College – his alma mater. Don is most proud of his loving wife Jill, and his six sons. Girls on the Run As students prepare to head back to school, many parents are looking for after-school activities that provide a safe and structured space where children can learn skills and be physically active. Girls on the Run offers this and so much more. A recent independent study provides compelling evidence that Girls on the Run is highly effective at driving transformative and lasting change in the lives of third to fifth grade girls. The program’s intentional curriculum places an emphasis on developing competence, confidence, connection, character,
caring, and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate running and other physical activities. Throughout the course of the tenweek program, girls learn critical life skills including managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others and making intentional decisions. It is the combination of the research-based curriculum, trained coaches and a commitment to serve all girls that sets Girls on the Run apart from other after-school programs. The independent study was conducted by
Maureen R. Weiss, Ph.D, a leading expert on youth development. “Girls on the Run participants scored higher in managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others, and making intentional decisions than participants in organized sport or physical education,” confirms Weiss. “Being able to generalize skills learned in the program to other situations such as at school or at home is a distinguishing feature of Girls on the Run compared to traditional youth sports and school physical education, and suggests that the intentional life
skills curriculum and coach-training program can serve as exemplars for other youth programs.” Key study results 1. 97 percent of girls said they learned critical life skills at Girls on the Run that they are using at home, at school and with their friends 2. 7 out of 10 girls who improved from preseason to post-season sustained improvements in competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, or physical activity beyond the season’s end. 3. Girls in Girls on the Run were significantly more likely than girls
in physical education or organized sports programs to learn and use life skills, including managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others and making intentional decisions. 4. Girls who were the least active before Girls on the Run increased their physical activity level by 40 percent from preseason to post-season and maintained this increased level beyond the program’s end. “We receive countless letters from girls, parents and coaches about how our program changes lives,” said Elizabeth Kunz,
chief executive officer of Girls on the Run. “The study findings reinforce these personal stories and provide powerful evidence that participation in Girls on the Run leads to positive changes. Celebration of Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention education programs is pleased to announce the Father Peter Sweisgood Memorial Breakfast will be held on Sunday, October 29th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Radisson Hauppauge.
