Mobile App Released The Town of Smithtown releases a new mobile app designed to give residents up-to-the minute updates and local news faster than ever before. This free app (available on the Apple App Store and Google Play) provides a mobile-friendly way to browse the Town of Smithtown website and access to emergency resources that many residents have requested. Prior to January 2018, numerous residents shared their input to Supervisor Ed Wehrheim asking for a faster, more effective outlet for them to learn more about what was happening within the town, from road closures and paving information, to weather alerts and storm preparation. “This is a tremendous

The stories that unfold in the space of a writer’s study, the objects chosen to watch over a desk, the books selected to sit on the shelves, all weave a web of echoes and reﬂections of meanings and affections, that lend a visitor the illusion that something of the owner of this space lives on between these walls, even if the owner is no more. {Alberto Manguel} From the day I began working at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers some 13-plus years ago, my desk and the meticulousness with which I chose to decorate, maintain and arrange it has been a topic of some fascination among my coworkers, the joke being that if someone dared to move a pencil or paper clip even a fraction of an inch, I would notice immediately. While this may be a bit extreme, the characterization is pretty darn close. I have always subscribed to the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” mostly because I felt the sense of

organization allowed me to better focus on the {many} tasks at hand in the fast-paced, deadlinedriven environment of a weekly publication. Folders and filing systems aside, though, the true character is represented by the many knick-knacks and personal touches which accent my area. Only now, as I prepare to pack up my belongings at the close of the month {a task I intend to put off until the very last moment, as we can’t have things looking “empty” for even a day}, have I really taken the time to appreciate all the memories associated with these special tokens accumulated through the years. There is the mug given to me by my mentor and very special friend Peter, who saw fit to take me under his wing from day one and gently nudge me into the spotlight with what would become the makings of this very column. There is the silk floral arrangement from my Mom, with the hand-written note, “A little touch of springtime for your desk, along with wishes for many happy days at your new

job,” a fixture from the very beginning. There is the photo of my friend Rose on our very first trip to Adventureland, her face a mixture of exhilaration and horror, as we careened down the famous log flume, holding on for dear life. And of course, there is the framed plate of my 500th column, published on March 11th, 2015, a testament to the longevity I never imagined I or the column - would achieve when I set foot in our old office on May 2nd, 2005. One move and another small renovation later, the layout of my desk and office space may have changed, but the memories have traveled with me, giving rise to many new ones made along the way. In just a few short weeks, the desk will be empty, the personal touches gone for good, relegated to a storage box in the back seat of my car for a time - until a better, more permanent home can be found. Things, as we know, are replaceable. It is the stories behind them which live on forever.

Will I be able to abandon the abundance of letters Those collected for over years and years? Filled with thoughts of long forgotten matters Speaking about hopes, wishes and fears. They had gotten stashed in numerous files To bridge between my mother and me The distance of over three thousand miles To where I had now chosen my life to be. Avid letter writers we both always were Each letter about days in our lives does read For with each other we wanted to share What was important then and now obsolete. I leaf thru some of the letters out of sentiment It feels as if a conversation is taking place Because they are written in my mother’s own hand An aura of her being with me forms an embrace. I have neither time nor the will to read them all The past is gone, for memory I just keep some Guilt grips me when into the garbage I let many fall It is sad, but out of place they did become. Now the future demands my full attention The present from the seeds of old times has grown To nurture it for the next generation is my attention What the past once held, now in my soul I own.

Prostate Cancer Screenings The Town of Smithtown and the Nesconset Fire Department will sponsor a Prostate Cancer Screening event on September 12th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nesconset Fire Department. The event is open to all men over the age of 40 who have not previously been diagnosed with prostate cancer, regardless of whether or not they have insurance.

“As a prostate cancer survivor, I can tell you firsthand the importance of having your prostate exam and your PSA exam as early as possible. A group of residents at Sun Harbor Nursing Home in Roslyn chose to dedicate their time and money to support the Warriors for a Cause organization, a local non-profit that consists of men and women from all walks of life, who band together to support causes that are close to their hearts. This organization proudly supports the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which helps the community in many ways. A significant program this foundation runs is their Smart Home Program. With this, they

build mortgage-free smart homes for the most catastrophically injured service members. Each home is custom-designed to address the needs of each person. Smart homes have various features such as automated doors and lighting, wider halls and doorways, special showers to accommodate wheelchairs, automatic door openers, stove tops that can be raised and lowered, backup generators and central heating and air conditioning systems that can be controlled by tablets. These homes allow

the most severely injured heroes to live better and more independent lives. Together, these two organizations successfully built Long Island’s first smart home, which was given to Long Island’s Army veteran, Chris Levi. Levi, a true hero, lost both of his legs while serving in Iraq. On Sunday, August 5th, these residents of Sun Harbor gathered around and received a visit from members of Warriors for a Cause, as well as Mr. Levi himself. It was truly an inspirational day.

Christine Cirillo’s fourth-grade class at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School shared their knowledge of Italian culture and language in a “Festa D’Italiano” presentation at the JFK Cafetorium.

The performance for family and friends began with a traditional Italian dance, the tarantella. Translated for the audience by Cirillo, the students then spoke in Italian, including facts about famous Italians like Michelangelo and

Students in Donna Beal’s class at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School designed and created paper tube marble runs after studying premade designs. After using magnetic runs to create a workable track system, the students drew blueprints using

paper tubes and duct tape. During the design process, the students tested out their runs and corrected any problems so that their marbles would roll smoothly through the mazes. Finally, the children painted their runs, reflected upon their work,

and wrote out the steps they followed. Each child presented their project and told the audience what they liked about the entire creative process. “We are very proud of the students’ perseverance and hard work,” said Beal.

Page Program Grads As the fourth year of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Page Program concluded on August 10th, legislators and staff celebrated the graduation of 26 participants, the largest class to date. After spending the summer immersed in the inner workings of local government, Pages will return to college with a comprehensive understanding of the legislature and possible career paths. “We are so proud of all that the Pages have accomplished this summer,” said the legislature’s presiding officer, DuWayne Gregory, who started the program in 2015. “Not only did they learn about the intricacies of local government, lawmaking, and public service, but they also gained valuable experience in working together to find common ground. Although the Pages are together for only a short time, they have developed leadership skills that they will carry with them for a lifetime.” “It’s been a pleasure watching these young men and women immerse themselves in the policy-making process,” said Legislator Tom Cilmi, the minority leader. “They’ve learned how our government works, developed their interpersonal skills, and gained an understanding of the complexities often inherent in the issues we confront on a daily basis. I am confident that, whether or not they go on to pursue public service, they leave the Page Program with real life experience and skills which will serve them well in the future.” The Page Program is an intensive 12-week program that provides college-aged students with a behind-thescenes look into local government. Pages remain actively involved in all aspects of the county, listening and communicating with Suffolk’s Legislators, other elected officials, policymakers and special guests who offer valuable information about their job responsibilities. Students also participate in weekly mock legislative meetings during which they play the roles of county legislators, form their own caucuses, debate mock legislation and observe the legislative process in real time during county meetings. “I learned a lot,” said Page Zachary Dyer, a Stony Brook University student from Rocky Point. “I really appreciated the hands-on experience.” “I really liked the experience of sitting at the horseshoe,” added Page Michael Casey from Commack, who said he also enjoyed when the Pages visited county

facilities. “The jail was definitely the best fieldtrip. It was so cool seeing everything from that perspective.” Other trips included the Medical Examiner’s Office, Suffolk County Police Headquarters, the Riverhead Correctional Facility and the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium. Each tour was specifically designed to expose Pages to different facets and responsibilities of the county. Pages also participated in a “Mock Interview Day” during which they met with county employees and legislators who prepared them for future job interviews

by offering constructive criticism and helpful advice to broaden their experiences and promote self-confidence. Additionally, students were assigned homework that was graded weekly, challenging them even while they were not attending legislative activities. “This year’s program proved to be the most successful and exciting program we’ve had,” said Clerk of the Legislature Jason Richberg, whose office coordinates the program. “It was a pleasure to work with these students every week and help them understand how our county works. The program’s motto is ‘Leadership for the Future,’ and I believe these students will be the next generation of leaders in Suffolk County. The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook is proud to announce that Linda U. Margolin managing partner in the law firm MargolinBesunder LLP, has been named Chair of its Board of Trustees, succeeding Guy Germano, also an attorney, who completed his term at the end of June. Executive Director Neil Watson stated, “We are thrilled that Linda has accepted this Board leadership position. She has served as a Trustee for the past seven years and knows the LIM’s history and where the museum needs to go in order to best serve its broad

Linda’s dedication and deep commitment to this community will greatly help the museum advance its position as a cultural and educational leader.” Margolin has been practicing law since 1975, concentrating her practice in the areas of land use and zoning, commercial litigation, and appeals. She served as law clerk to the Hon. Jacob Mishler, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York from 1975 to 1976. She has an "AV" attorney rating from MartindaleHubbell. Margolin is an active member of the Suffolk

County Bar Association; she has served as a director, and on the Federal Courts, Civil Rights, Appellate Practice, Judicial Screening, Nominating and Bench Bar Committees; she is also an active member of the New York State Bar Association, including the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section; past chair of the General Practice Section; present co-chair of the Land Use and Environmental Law Committee of the Real Property Section and member of the House of Delegates, and a Fellow of the New York Bar Foundation. She is also a member of the American Bar Association’s Litigation Section, and the Federal Bar Council. Since 2011, Ms. Margolin has served as a trustee of the Long Island Museum of Art, History and Carriages and she acts as pro bono counsel for the India Society of Stony Brook. She lives in Setauket with her husband Robert where she pursues sailing and gardening with equal fervor.

Game Farm Fun The weather may not have been ideal, but that didn’t stop thousands of people from visiting the Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo on its 4th annual 1970’s Admission Price Day (AKA 1970’s Day) on July 28th. For one special day, visitors took advantage of

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program for undergraduate and graduate students seeking internship opportunities in county government. The new program offers real world experience for students interested in gaining professional public sector experience and a true understanding of the mechanics outside of the classroom. Students must submit applications no later than August 24th. “An internship with the Suffolk County Government provides firsthand, invaluable experience in public service,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve

Bellone. “Being exposed to real world innergovernment situations and working closely with the teams in our departments is an education in and of itself.” This program will provide students with an opportunity to interact with Suffolk County’s residents and key community groups, including exposure to the inner workings of County department and agencies. Over the course of an internship, interns will have the opportunity to liaise with staff on key initiatives and projects to enhance the Suffolk community. Students interested in this program should be detail-orientated professionals, with strong time management and

communication skills. The Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program is a selective program that selects and places candidates within multiple agencies or Departments within Suffolk County government. Interns are required to work a minimum 15 hours per week, must be 18 or older and currently enrolled in college. All internships within the program are unpaid. The money raised at this event was donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. Over the past 8 years, the event has raised over $323,000 for this

organization. “It was great to meet with the Birchwood Veteran’s Group at their annual golf outing. This event has provided a fantastic opportunity to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project so that we can provide financial aid to our brave veterans who were wounded in combat. I am incredibly thankful for their dedication to

our wounded soldiers and veterans, local and abroad, whose selfless sacrifices have ensured our safety and our nation’s security,” said Legislator Anker. Stuff-a-Bus Partnership The Long Island Nets are partnering with United Way of Long Island as part of the organization’s 10th annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign to help local students from low-income families head back to school prepared, with new backpacks and other essential school supplies. With the support of Senator Kemp Hannon, Senator Elaine Phillips, Target and P. C. Richard & Son, the Long Island Nets will be able to provide thousands of school supplies to the Freeport and Roosevelt School Districts, along with several other Town of Hempstead beneficiaries through the program. Beginning now through August 31st, the Long Island Nets will be collecting school supplies at various locations throughout Nassau County, which will be distributed to students in advance of the 2017-2018 school year. For
