East Islip High School students have completed a two-year project designing and constructing a pond ecosystem in the courtyard between the academic hallways. This “living laboratory” is already paying dividends by providing science students from across the district with an opportunity to study in a real-world environment. “Seeing students of all ages out there in the environment has been an excellent experience, one that will continue to benefit the children of East Islip for years to come,” said teacher Paul McHugh. The pond was created through a collaborative effort by teacher Genesis Dawson and the school’s Science Honor Society, McHugh and East Islip’s Environmental Club, and students from the Environment Green Career Academy. After digging the hole and installing the liner for the pond, plantings and compost were added in both the fall and spring
during the 2011-2012 school year. In the spring of 2013, the pond was improved with wallstone placed around the edge. Additional plantings and paths are planned for 20132014. “We could not have completed the project without the assistance and generosity of many different people and organizations,” said McHugh, who noted that the pond liner was donated by the Firestone Company, while pond architect Butch Starkie from Starkie Bros. Garden Center provided the equipment and expertise needed to complete the project. Many plants were donated from the Town of Islip and the Long Island Natural Grass Initiative. Students, staff and visitors to the high school are invited to view the pond. “If you are in the high school and would like to visit the pond environment, it may be viewed from any of the window areas in the cross hallways,” said McHugh.

Living Laboratory “Try taking a look from the first and second floors for a different perspective of the overall project.” East Islip students from kindergarten to high school have already benefited by visiting and observing many different aspects of the natural world. One of the biggest hits of the pond environment is the mother duck and her ducklings. “For many years, female mallard ducks built nests and hatched ducklings in the relatively empty courtyard,” explained McHugh. “Now the ducks have a natural environment in which they can use resources such as the pond to swim and the food and cover of the native plants and grasses.” RCK kindergartners made field trips to the pond this past May, studying the ducks’ behavior and releasing one of their classroom newts into its new home in the pond.

One Last Look By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As an editor, it would stand to reason that I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions. First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm). As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a
document designed to promote literacy among the youth, seemingly put together by someone who could have used a couple more years fine-tuning his/her English skills… and this generated by one of the poorest performing districts on Long Island. Perhaps it was merely a test to see how many people would pick out the mistakes? And then, just last week came this: a new sign on the Robert Moses Causeway directing drivers to “Jonse” Beach. The sign was hung recently on the southbound side, causing many drivers to do a double take. Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive
roadside signs exempt from the proofreading process? Although, come to think of it, I actually had my own such experience with a misspelled sign back in high school, when the school district commissioned their annual display saluting the year’s Valedictorian, Salutatorian and other such honors. My excitement at seeing my name painted on the giant wooden signs marking both ends of town was slightly marred when we drove by to see the following on graduation morning: Valedictorian ~ Jamie Lee Ryan. Just a word to the wise – the bigger the structure, and the more publicly distributed the document, the more “second looks” (and third, and fourth) any wording should be given. (As I re-read this column one more time!)

Memorial Garden September 11th, 2001: a day many will never forget, a day that the Bay Shore Community will honor with the creation of a 9/11 Memorial Garden at Bay Shore Middle School. Why do we accept the fact that the government controls this facet of our lives? Some of the members of my town are doing everything we can to make sure our homes stay intact through the winter. We are dropping thousands
of dollars on “trap bags,” which promise to naturally build up a dune and protect our little town. Beach Scraping is also an option, albeit a short-term solution. These small scale projects are doubtfully going to give us adequate protection from Mother Nature. In actuality, we do not need this protection from the elements; we need it from the government. When my mother came to America thirty-five years ago, she was not expecting to be at the mercy of the government, she was expecting total freedom. Eminent Domain contradicts those freedoms promised to us all.

Eminent Domain is arguably an attack on the rights of American citizens. It seems unfair that the government can just force a family out of their home. Sure, they offer a small sum of money to cushion the grief, but is it really adequate compensation? Our government claims to buyout the houses at market value, but with the economy in shambles as it is, market value is poor. In my town, on Fire Island, you can refuse the buyout. You can simply say no to the puny sum offered to you. But if you do so, the government reserves the right to just take your house in the event of another disaster. If your
Town of Islip officials are urging residents to take advantage of the Islip E-Alert system to stay informed during hurricanes and major emergencies, and also to receive important news in their community. Residents, businesses, and community leaders can all benefit from this system, which can instantaneously pass important information to those who have signed up. Those who sign up for the service can opt to receive the alerts via email and/or text message. The system has been established in such a way that even if the Town’s communications network compromised, E-Alerts can still be sent from off-site servers. The service is free and residents are urged to sign up for e-alerts from the homepage at www. townofislip-ny.gov.

Prize Winner East Islip High School alumnus Michael Fisher was recognized in April as the winner of the Cinema and Screen Studies Dean’s Writing Award at the State University of New York at Oswego, where he recently graduated. He earned this prestigious honor for an October 2012 essay, The Rebirth of Neorealism in American Independent Cinema (viewable below). The film major received a $50 prize from the Oswego dean’s office. His paper was published on the SUNY Oswego Writing Across the Curriculum website, and he was honored on the university’s Quest Day and at the CSS Senior Showcase. Fisher, a member of East Islip’s Class of 2009, was one of the first students to join the school’s Environment Green Career Academy program. “Mike was heavily involved in my video and broadcasting classes as well as my technology classes,” said Israel Malinowitzer, East Islip’s director of careers and student services. “He was one of the top students in our technology department.” “Receiving this award was a great honor for me,” said Fisher. “As someone who was always focused in production, writing this paper was an eye-opening experience in that it showed me that there was more to being a film major than making movies. Many people, both inside and outside the major, grossly underestimate the value of the critical studies classes we have to take. Being able to think and speak about films intellectually
is something that helps you improve your productions by giving you a more in-depth understanding of the theories behind films, and you should enjoy it as well. What kind of film major doesn’t enjoy talking about movies?” “Michael’s essay is an exemplar of critical studies writing in our discipline,” said Amy Shore, the director of cinema and screen studies at SUNY Oswego. “He achieves a masterful integration of history, theory and textual analysis to arrive at new ideas about film and cinema. East Islip High School technology students and their teachers participated in the Long Island STEM Hub first anniversary celebration on May 9th, held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. East Islip’s tech team displayed a Jeep project, built over the course of several months by the students at the high school under the guidance of teacher Chad Spruyt, as well as the school’s futuristic new 3-D printer. “This year we purchased the 3-D printer with grant money through the East Islip Career Academy program,” explained James Connell, a technology
teacher at the high school. “The 3-D printer was a new addition to our graphic communications and CAD classes. Our students learned how to use the printer and its software to design and create full-scale three-dimensional models for product development, such as cellphone cases, gears and other models.” Connell hopes that in the future, East Islip’s technology classes will incorporate the printer into more of the curriculum. “The 3-D printer is very valuable in the classroom,” added Israel Malinowitzer, the district’s guidance director and a co-chairman of the Long Island
STEM Career Awareness Committee. “Our students all look forward to creating 3-D images.” Over 150 high school and college students from across Long Island participated in the celebration, showcasing projects and partnerships related to STEM (which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and networking with industry leaders. The LI STEM Hub is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and North Shore-LIJ Health System.

East Islip High School graduates Jacob Levesque and Brian Potter were the 2013 recipients of the MSG Varsity scholarship award and were granted $1,000 each in college funds. “Both Brian and Jacob were the recipients of this award due to their tireless efforts with the video production and broadcast television program within the school,” said East Islip technology teacher James Connell. “They helped with every event – Embers Coffee House, the East Islip High School Film Festival, the Long Island Media Arts Show and First Exposure Film Festival – that was run in and out of the studio last year.” Levesque and Potter plan on majoring in audio engineering and video
production, respectively, when they begin their college careers this September. The awards were donated by MSG Varsity as part of the organization’s ongoing incentive for schools tied to the MSG Varsity program. “If a certain number of videos, slideshows and articles are uploaded to MSG Varsity within a given school year, they release scholarship money to the schools that meet the mark,” explained Connell, noting that $2,000 is the maximum amount of scholarship money that MSG will provide in any school year. “This achievement was due largely in part to the efforts of Hal Kench and his Technology Club,” added Connell. “Mr. Kench
is a true inspiration to the staff and students here at the high school. His hard work and dedication to this program have really paid off for students in the technology education department.” The East Islip/MSG Varsity partnership began two years ago, when the company kick-started the program with donations of a high-definition video camera, still camera, assorted microphones and money for the purchase of two video-editing iMac computers. Kench noted that East Islip students submitted 113 videos, 67 photo galleries and 16 journalism articles to MSG Varsity’s East Islip High School page during the 2012-2013 school year.

During each year, the Auxiliary sponsors many different fundraisers, which enables them to assist the veterans, their families, and people throughout the community who are in need of assistance. The Auxiliary is always sending cards and gift boxes to the servicemen and women overseas on a regular basis. Thanks to Nina Cooley who overseas this ongoing project. The Auxiliary, along with the AMVETS, promotes and poster and essay contest for grades
K-12. This year, they were pleased to have over 250 students participate, with 25 students receiving monetary gifts totaling $900. The Auxiliary also conducts monthly visits to the VA Hospital, providing refreshments and entertainment. They look forward to this visit each and every year. The Auxiliary would like to extend an invite to any lady whose husband, son, daughter or grandchildren may have or is presently serving in the service to come to one of the monthly meeting to hear personally what the Auxiliary continues to do for veterans. by Lucky and Max. Bear was responsible for saving his new adoptive owner, Carol Swinson, and her nine-year-old grandson, DJ, after a fire broke up at their Brentwood home. Bear jumped on top of Carol to wake her up and alert her of the danger. The family was able to escape the fire safely and they are currently living in a trailer until their home can be fully repaired. The toys were donated from residents all throughout the Town of Islip in efforts to replace those he lost in the fire. Bear was at the shelter for two months after being picked up by the Town’s Animal Control Officers in Oakdale in May.

East Islip Middle School and East Islip High School competed in the Long Island Iron Chef Competition for the first time this March at Whole Foods in Lake Grove, and came away with first- and second-place prizes. The East Islip Middle School team, consisting of four students, was awarded first place, with a perfect score from the event’s seven judges. The East Islip High School team, a trio,
won second place in the competition. Open to students in grades 6-12 across Long Island, Long Island Iron Chef was sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative Learning Center and Whole Foods. East Islip’s participation was supervised and coordinated by middle school family and consumer science teacher Patrician Emmons-Fritz. “This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to show the

Fritz, the three were victorious in the “Sew to Serve” middle school service learning category of the challenge, which is held by Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals to raise awareness of family and consumer sciences education. In the challenge, high school and middle
school students compete to create innovative and userfriendly projects that take new approaches to real-life challenges. Banville, Bloom and Carney were sent certificates, prizes and congratulatory notes from Diane Amato, the area coordinator for LI FACS Professionals.
The magic of The Wizard of Oz came to Timber Point for two marvelous fifthgrade performances on June 11th and 12th. Timber Point Drama Club adviser Jen Giordano was proud of what her thespians had accomplished, saying, “What a phenomenal group of kids!” Between the drama students and stage crew, 60 children participated in the production, including kindergartners and firstgraders playing the Munchkins. The main cast included Melanie Arma as Dorothy, Thomas Locke as the Scarecrow, Nicole Serino
as the Tin Man, Hailey LaMacchia as the Cowardly Lion, Kayleigh Marquart as the Wicked Witch and Melissa Kinnear as Glinda the Good Witch. The high quality of the musical production was a testament to not only the students’ acting and singing abilities, but also to the extensive degree of cooperation and contribution from the greater school community. “We had two very talented parents – professional seamstress Anne-Marie Orgera and makeup artist Lisa Ferrezza – help achieve a professional
look and experience for the children,” explained Giordano. “We even had graduating senior Joseph Nafal work our lighting for us.” The colorful scenery and set designs for “Wizard” were created by Timber Point art teacher Christina Spera and the school’s Art Club, with help from Orgera. “After the show, Timber Point’s halls were filled with the sounds of music as children sang the songs they know so well from the movie – it was adorable,” recalled Giordano.

Scholarships Awarded East Islip High School graduates Jacob Levesque and Brian Potter were the 2013 recipients of the MSG Varsity scholarship award and were granted $1,000 each in college funds. “Both Brian and Jacob were the recipients of this award due to their tireless efforts with the video production and broadcast television program within the school,” said East Islip technology teacher
James Connell. “They helped with every event – Embers Coffee House, the East Islip High School Film Festival, the Long Island Media Arts Show and First Exposure Film Festival – that was run in and out of the studio last year.” Levesque and Potter plan on majoring in audio engineering and video production, respectively, when they begin their college careers this
September. The awards were donated by MSG Varsity as part of the organization’s ongoing incentive for schools tied to the MSG Varsity program. “If a certain number of videos, slideshows and articles are uploaded to MSG Varsity within a given school year, they release scholarship money to the schools that meet the mark,” explained Connell, noting that $2,000 is the
maximum amount of scholarship money that MSG will provide in any school year. “This achievement was due largely in part to the efforts of Hal Kench and his Technology Club,” added Connell. “Mr. Kench is a true inspiration to the staff and students here at the high school. His hard work and dedication to this program have really paid off for students in
the technology education department.” The East Islip/MSG Varsity partnership began two years ago, when the company kick-started the program with donations of a high-definition video camera, still camera, assorted microphones and money for the purchase of two videoediting iMac computers. Kench noted that East Islip students submitted 113 videos,
67 photo galleries and 16 journalism articles to MSG Varsity’s East Islip High School page during the 2012-2013 school year.
