Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be holding a workshop tailored to equip professionals with an understanding of the skills needed to ensure a therapeutic response to behavioral challenges. A First Impression, Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Say what you will about the drawbacks of social media, the tendency to over-share, the impersonal nature of “connecting” remotely, but, sometimes, such an avenue can prove vital in reconnecting with those we may have crossed paths with in a previous stage of life. Such has been the case through the years, as Facebook “friends” have accumulated faster than my ability to keep up with them, at least in any sort of personal, meaningful way. What began as an attempt

to build a somewhat professional network of contacts in the journalism industry quickly morphed into an avalanche of high school and college friends, fellow dance students and work colleagues. Somehow lost in the mix were those old acquaintances that you, quite simply, just never got to know well enough to develop any sort of deeper friendship. You may have traveled in neighboring circles, shared common life experiences, but failed to make the leap beyond the preconceived notions that often cloud our youth.

First impressions last a lifetime, or so they say; but the advantage of adulthood is that, sometimes, we have the presence of mind to take a step back, take stock of the situation and reevaluate. Such is one of the benefits of social media – second chances. The opportunity to get to know someone, truly, is a rare gift that should be accepted, and savored. Blood Shortage The American Red Cross is facing a looming shortage of the blood types most needed by patients and is calling on eligible donors with O negative, B negative and A negative blood to give now to prevent an emergency situation. Blood donation appointments can be quickly and easily scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1.800.RED CROSS. Overall blood donations in the Red Cross New York-Penn Blood Services Region have been approximately 3,876 fewer per month in June and July this year than the previous 10 months of the year. When demand for the most needed types begins to outpace donations, the Red Cross

alerts donors to help restock the shelves. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients with any blood type. Types B negative and A negative can be transfused to Rh positive or negative patients. Eligible donors are encouraged to donate double red cells – a process where two units of red cells are collected while most of the plasma and platelets are returned to the donor – where available. “Summer blood shortages are not uncommon, but they can be prevented when generous volunteers roll up their sleeves to help save lives,” said Nick Gehrig, senior communications director, Red Cross Blood Services. “Many donors

have already given this summer. We’re now asking donors who haven’t donated, and those who are eligible again, to make an appointment to give now to help ensure blood products are available for patients.” Platelets and type AB plasma also needed Platelet donors and those with type AB blood are also continually needed to help ensure patients receive the lifesaving blood products they need. Platelets – a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients, surgical patients and bone narrow recipients – must be transfused within five days of donation, so donations are constantly needed. Donors with type AB blood are urged to give blood or platelets

On July 28th, more than 20 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim. Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) and awareness about the disease, spearheaded the swim. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and swam across the Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of

approximately three miles. Before taking to the water, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, ADRC and Mr. Proctor thanked the participants for their support in fighting this insidious disease. The first swimmer to complete the course was Andrea O’Brien, who finished in just over an hour. “This year’s swim signifies a very strong commitment to our cause by all of these men and women, many of whom have been touched by Alzheimer’s,” Ms. Malack-

Student Skills In its first extracurricular event for the new school year, East Islip High School’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy joined more than 40 members of the East Islip Community Chamber for the chamber’s second annual Long Island Sound cruise on July 20th.

Accompanied by teacher Patricia Emmons-Fritz and Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer, the culinary students prepared, delivered and served all of the food for the evening event, held on the Moon Chaser boat from Captree State Park. “This was an amazing

opportunity for the students who took part in this event,” said Malinowitzer. “It was absolutely wonderful to see them work as a team to make this event a huge success. Everyone was so impressed by the students and how they handled themselves.”

The 2015 Seatuck E n v i r o n m e n t a l Association’s “South Shore Nature Center Scholarship” was awarded to Mr. Thomas DiOrio, a 2015 graduate of East Islip High School. Tom was a member of East Islip’s Green Academy and has demonstrated a continued passion for nature and conservation. This spring he was the winner of a Sustainable Long Island contest for his presentation about a rain garden that he and his

Green Academy classmates installed in the high school courtyard. Throughout his senior year, Tom also worked at an intern for Seatuck at the Scully Estate and the South Shore Nature Center. He played an invaluable role in assisting with the maintenance of exhibits, animal tanks and public trails. He was also a tremendous help in setting up for Seatuck’s major events, including the annual Eco-Carnival and Owl Prowl 5K.

Nick Singh, a recent graduate of Islip High School, recentyly attended a Boys & Girls Clubs of America event in Albany as a Long Island Ambassador, competing for a chance to become the organization’s New York State representative in the National Youth of the Year competition. He was one of only 18 teens nominated out of 197,000 applicants. As a member of the Hicksville Boys & Girls Club since seventh grade, Singh has evolved to a position of leadership, serving as a tutor, peer counselor, fundraiser, community organizer and vice president of the group’s Torch Club. While at the competition,

which was attended by state legislators, he was interviewed by Boys & Girls Clubs judges and gave a speech, where he talked about the many personal and family hardships he faced while growing up. Although he was not chosen as New York State Youth of the Year, according to Singh, the head judge took him aside and told him that his application had touched their hearts. State Sen. Thomas D. Croci and State Assemblymen Al Graf and Michael Montesano were all eager to meet him during the event, where they discussed topics including politics as well as helping others and working for a baseball foundation. “I didn’t win, but felt like a winner,” said Singh. “The trip was lifechanging, inspirational and motivational, and they treated us like royalty.” “I had known this kid was special, but that day, I found out that he is truly one of a kind,” said Principal Michael Mosca upon Singh’s return from

Albany. “His determination and perseverance are second to none.” In keeping with his overall positive mental attitude and embrace of the long view, Singh did not regret attending the competition. “I’m a big believer that everything happens for a reason,” he said. “If I’d won, I’d be traveling all the time and wouldn’t get to see my family and friends very much. This opened doors for me and made me realize how far I’d come.” Singh will be attending Suffolk County Community College this fall. He originally planned to study sports medicine or training, but is now considering youth services or political science, thanks to his growth experiences with the Boys & Girls Club and the Albany conference. “I’m only 18, and if I don’t give up, great things can happen,” said Singh. “My future really is on track.”

Martin added, “Every overdose is someone’s mother, father, daughter, or son. The training takes about an hour, the admission of the drug is through a mucosal atomization device (MAD), and there are no side effects at all.” Carla Bonilla, a second year nursing student from Brentwood, comes from a family of nurses. She said, “I feel that with this knowledge, I could save someone’s life.”

educator for the past decade, he comes to East Islip from Longwood School District, where he most recently served for four years as department chairperson for music and fine arts. Prior to that, he was band and choral director at Longwood High School, band director at Longwood Junior High School and a music and chorus teacher at Longwood Middle School. Wottawa holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Franklin Pierce University for classical

guitar performance. He also earned his master’s degree in music education from Long Island University, where he is currently pursuing an educational doctorate. All alone in its secluded posture it remains, With only the visiting clouds illuminating its background; Preparing their descent into dusk, Allowing filaments of egg blue sky to filter through, Igniting the landscape in luminous rosy gilded hues. Helping to honor veterans and strengthen ties within the community, the East Islip Middle School Builders Club participated in another act of patriotism and service with Long Island Honor Flight, greeting veterans returning from a recent trip to Washington, D.C. This latest Honor Flight included 48 World War II veterans and two Korean War veterans, aided by 60 accompanying guardians. Among the veterans of note were Joe LaBarbera, one of the last living members of Darby’s Rangers, and couple Hank and Rhona Aron, who met during WWII and have been married for 71 years. After an early morning motorcycle escort by Boots on the Ground New York, Red Knights of New York, American Legion Riders and Iron Shields of New York, the vets departed from Islip’s Long Island MacArthur Airport. Upon arrival at BaltimoreWashington International Airport, they were greeted by a fire truck escort and water cannon salute, and were given a standing ovation by passengers and crews from all of the other

airlines. Buses took the vets to the National World War II Memorial, where they spent two hours in reflection, followed by visits to the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. When the returning vets arrived back at the airport in Islip that evening, a crowd of several hundred people were there waiting to welcome them, including family members, the East Islip Middle School Builders Club, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and honor guards from various organizations. The Builders Club students, led by teacher Rena Costello, had created “welcome home” signs with the veterans’ names on them. They also wrote “mail call” thank-you letters to the veterans, which Honor Flight gave them to read during the trip as a heartwarming way to relive the experience of receiving mail from home. “I’m not sure what made me prouder, to see great American heroes grateful to the community welcoming them home, or to see our children looking up to them and

cheering them on,” said airport attendee Michael Arens, whose son, Jacob, is a member of the Builders Club. “My family greatly appreciates Mrs. Costello’s dedication to the Builders Club and for giving our children the opportunity to support our nation’s veterans.” Honor Flight Long Island, based in Southampton, has been in existence since 2006, providing free plane trips and daylong tours for veterans to relevant sites in Washington, D.C. The nonprofit has flown 32 missions to the capitol for more than 1,250 participating Long Island WWII veterans, and continues to seek veterans interested in attending as well as donations from the community. “It’s safe to say that we all get more out of our participation than we put into it, and we look forward to working together on the next fall flight,” said Honor Flight committee member Tina Bates, whose children, Lucas and Sophia, are Builders Club members and participate in Honor Flight events.

building. Preparing for an event of this size takes lots of planning and requires lots of help. The American Heart Association relies on volunteers to help make sure the day is picture perfect. They are

looking for volunteers to help at this year’s Long Island Heart Walk event on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Jones Beach. There are lots of jobs to do and lots of people needed to do it. Volunteer positions include day before event

set up, day of event set up, registration, helping in the food tent (morning and afternoon), route rally, water station, finish line cheer squad and event clean up. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these areas, or know someone (or a group)
