Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My Little Corner of LI are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. I know plenty of fellow Lindy friends who have moved across the country upon graduating, precisely for this reason; however, just as many remain in the area, toughing out life on LI. Our mission: to make ends meet so as not to be forced to flee this island oasis that we call home. Sure, you may indeed get more for your money elsewhere; but where else can you be equidistant from the great landmarks of Manhattan and the beautiful beaches of Montauk? A mere vacation getaway for some, we are fortunate to reside here year round, through all four seasons of splendor. In that sense, there

Students lined up in their classroom in a safe, quiet, and orderly fashion, then they took turns exiting the class and paraded down the hallway. Premm doesn’t have a marching band so Music Teacher Mr. Zaros did the next best thing; he chose Under the Sea-themed music like Octopus’s Garden by the Beatles and Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin to accompany the parade. The parade concluded in the multi-purpose room. Zaros scattered an assortment of instruments such as drums, triangles, and maracas and multicolored ribbons around the room to encourage the students to socialize, move freely, and dance. Oldest Tree The oldest living tree, 4,700-year-old “Methuselah” grows in White Mountains, Calif.

The curriculum and activities aligned with New York Standards for English, Science, and the Arts. With an Under the Sea theme, teachers had a fun time coming up with puns for the bulletin boards such as, ‘Everything has a porpoise’ and ‘Whale hello there! We are happy to sea you!’ Hats were crafted from construction paper, crayons, magic markers, and plastic googly eyes to resemble lobsters, crabs, and sharks. Disney characters like Ariel were cut out of their coloring books and attached to hats. The projects provided an opportunity for the students to use their fine motor skills; cutting, using

Movie Thursdays at Premm Learning Center offer more than entertainment for students. The entire exercise simulates the experience of visiting a movie theater, giving students the opportunity to practice good communication skills. Premm is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special needs. Each Thursday afternoon, the school shows two movies
and students take turns functioning as ushers, ticket takers, and concession stand operators. When attendees arrive at the “theater,” they use appropriate communication to request the movie of their choice. They receive a movie ticket and fake money to purchase a snack before proceeding to the concession stand. Next, theatregoers give their movie tickets to the

Movie Afternoons ushers before entering the classrooms where the movies are being shown. To communicate, students may verbalize what they want, gesture or use an augmentative device. Said Sandra Pensak, summer principal at Premm, “This weekly event allows students to practice life skills and communicating with others in a situation that depicts the real world.”

The show will be Sunday, September 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is the only car show on the East Coast to offer men free onsite PSA screening tests for early detection of Prostate Cancer. The Town of Islip’s Office of Emergency Management recently held a hurricane preparedness forum at the Islip Fire House. Town personnel were joined by representatives of the Long Island Red Cross and the Suffolk County FRES Department (Fire,
Rescue, and Emergency Services). Several speakers educated the participants on the importance of having a plan in the event of an emergency, and the lessons learned from past hurricanes that can save lives and property in the future.

Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their classrooms with their own money. The Education
Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession

A Dedicated Mechanic Recent East Islip graduate Connor Ennis is well on his way to becoming a master mechanic, utilizing the school’s rigorous technology classes to springboard his skills and passion for repairs. A member of East Islip’s Class of 2017, Ennis began enrolling in technology classes as soon as he entered 10th grade, the first year that students can begin these classes. During the next three years, he took every tech class taught by teacher Chad Spruyt, including basic and advanced wood shop and metal shop as well as basic automotive, where he fell in love with working with small engines. He then enrolled in advanced automotive, and began using more
advanced machines as well as working on bigger motors such as go-karts, minibikes, and trikes. He rebuilt, sanded and painted an old Mercedes; made tire and oil changes; lifted a Jeep three inches; and was even called on to make machine spacers for the district’s buildings and grounds department. “Connor found his passion and it was the ability to work with his hands, and fix and rebuild things that no longer operated,” said Israel Malinowitzer, East Islip’s technology director. “Connor was so good that Mr. Spruyt began teaching him how to work on cars and boats and how to be able to determine what was wrong with them so that problems could quickly be fixed. He spent every free
moment this year in the automotive shop, visiting during his free periods and lunchtime, and staying after school to work on his projects. He has the knowledge and the skills needed to operate these machines, which will help him to move forward and be able to work for a large automotive company or even open his own repair shop in town.” Ennis plans on attending BOCES this fall in order to expand his knowledge and to become certified in welding and mechanical applications. “We are very proud of this young man’s dedication and commitment to this career field and we know he will be very successful,” said Malinowitzer.
