This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. For this scholarship contest, students simply need to create a short video that illustrates one or more of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws for Pedestrian Enforcement. The intent of the competition is to encourage more widespread understanding about various pedestrian/ traffic safety laws. The Pedestrian Education Video Scholarship Competition is offered by the New York State Coalition for Transportation Safety. The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Academy students at Milliken Technical Center recently participated in a post-car accident scene that was created for the Law Enforcement students to properly manage a multi-person casualty, and for the Medical Assisting students to perform triage on numerous victims. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has campuses in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.
The accident scene aftermath was orchestrated in a parking lot at the school and involved a twocar collision. Volunteer victims sporting special effects makeup positioned themselves in the cars and on the ground. Some of the victims utilized prosthetic wounds for classmates in the Medical Assisting Program to bandage. Law Enforcement students took witness statements from classmates acting as passersby, made arrests, practiced crowd control, and learned to create an
accident scene. Cosmetology students created special effects makeup so accident victims looked authentic, Auto Body students supplied the damaged cars, and a member of the Suffolk County Police Department visited to provide on-thescene advice to students. Said Sandra Lochren, Law Enforcement Teacher, “This event teaches students to expect the unexpected and how to think and respond appropriately in difficult situations.”

A Pair Of Prestigious Awards AnnMarie Mills of Islip Middle School recently won the Suffolk County Science Teachers Association’s Middle School Teacher of the Year award as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators. Mills recently completed the Greentree Foundation Teacher’s Ecology Workshop, developing a maturecentered outdoor classroom science curriculum which incorporated local ecosystems in all units as well as emphasizing the importance of regular outdoor learning. She also adopted a place-based education philosophy in which students use Long Island ecology and environmental issues as
primary learning resources for learning. She collaborated with Molloy College and CERCOM’s Crab Club to raise five juvenile horseshoe crabs in her classroom and worked with the Seatuck Environmental Foundation to allow students to raise and release quail chicks. Mills has offered Islip’s students numerous exciting field trips, fostering a love of science, including a “A Day in the Life of the River” at Babylon’s Carlls River, “Fall into Nature” at Seatuck, a marine biology fishing trip in the Great South Bay, a “floating classroom” at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in Southampton, and Molloy College’s Women in Science Conference. Mills will travel with
her family to Washington D.C. in July to receive the EPA award. As part of winning the PIAEE, Mills will receive a plaque and $2,500 to further her professional development in environmental education, and the Islip School District will also receive $2,500 to fund environmental educational activities and programs. “AnnMarie takes teaching to the next level by applying real-world scenarios into daily lessons,” said Principal Timothy Martin. “Her students get to experience the environment right outside the classroom window which makes her lessons tangible, fun, and realistic for students.”

The honored students were Christian Guerrero (project on El Salvador), Nicole Huaylinos (project on Peru), Harold Martinez (project on Argentina), Bianka Morales (project on Guatemala), Isabella Pollina (project on Cuba) and Leonardo Soto (project on Colombia). The Seal of Biliteracy affirms the value of diversity in a multilingual society, recognizes the value of world and home
language instruction in schools, encourages the study of languages, identifies high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, provides universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission and prepares students with 21st century skills. “Our district has been recognizing students for their bilingualism, biliteracy and cross-
