ngela’s House, a non-profit organization servicing over 600 families with medically frail/ terminally ill children, recently held a Fishing Trip Fundraiser that set sail out of Captree. There were four boats and 250 people of all ages. This was the organization’s 8th Annual Fishing Trip Fundraiser. The event was sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Anthony Policastro, and was held by founder Bob Policastro. Thanks to all those who supported this great cause.

Canstruction® Long Island, Inc., one of the country’s most unique food charities has opened registration for teams to compete in its 2014 design competition to help fight hunger here on Long Island. Tastemakers from the Hamptons and New York City indulged their appetites for cuisine and philanthropy at the 10th Annual “A Hamptons Happening” fundraiser on July 26th, raising an estimated $400,000 to benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF). Staged at the scenic Bridgehampton estate of Maria and Kenneth Fishel, the event’s tented venue was resplendent in white accentuated by décor and floral arrangements in the SWCRF’s cancer research awareness color Orchid for the Cure. The event honored celebrity chef David Burke, iconic fashion designer Betsey Johnson, and Paul Ridley, co-founder of Row For Hope, to support the SWCRF’s funded research programs to reprogram cancer cells and develop less toxic treatments for patients. Approximately 400 guests, including former stars of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New York City” Jill Zarin and Allyson Shapiro, and Christine Silverstein, a contestant on the current season of FOX’s Master Chef and contributor to The Savory.com, enjoyed cuisine presented by the top chefs, restaurants and food and spirits brands in New York City and the

Hamptons. The evening included an awards presentation and live auction presided over by WCBSTV Channel 2 News anchor Chris Wragge, “A Hamptons Happening” founding co-chair Laurie Schaffran and SWCRF founder and CEO Samuel Waxman, M.D., who announced a $25,000 grant for brain cancer research established by the Fishel family in memory of Avi Concool. Wragge galvanized the audience by holding an impromptu auction to match the Fishel’s donation. Howard Schwartz, principal of Grandstand Sports & Memorabilia, conducted the primary auction, which was highlighted by the appearance of Gianni Russo, one of the stars of the classic film “The Godfather,” to present his donation of an authentic Sicilian dinner for eight and a serenade of Italian classic songs performed by Russo himself. Dr. Waxman then presented SWCRF awards to honorees David Burke, Betsey Johnson and Paul Ridley for their support of fundraising and awareness for cancer research. “A Hamptons Happening” was chaired by event co-founders

HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Commissioner of Health Service James Tomarken, MD, MPH, today congratulated Suffolk County Senior Public Health Sanitarian Lisa Potopsingh, who was one of ten applicants selected to participate in the Fellowship in Food Protection Program, a yearlong program administered by the International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI). “We congratulate Lisa Potopsingh, who stood out from over 150 applicants nationwide and is one of only ten to be selected for this prestigious fellowship,” said County Executive Bellone. “This achievement is a testimony to Suffolk County’s outstanding public health protection program.” The other nine members chosen to be among the Cohort of Fellows represent agencies from the states of Colorado, Oklahoma, Indiana, Florida, Louisiana, New York, Iowa, and

Washington, and Chatham County in North Carolina. The Fellowship in Food Protection Program is a year-long program that provides future regulatory leaders with an intensive professional development experience focused on critical thinking, problem solving and decisionmaking skills within the framework of food regulatory science, law and policy. “Suffolk County’s highly trained food inspectors are also educators. They not only inspect food establishments but also educate food handlers on how to prevent foodborne illness” said Dr. Tomarken. “It is not surprising that one of our own would be selected for this prestigious fellowship.” Lisa, who hails from Commack, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2006, joined the Department of Health Services as a food inspector the same

The International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI) is a leading food protection organization dedicated to protecting the world’s food supply. Established in 2009, IFPTI is dedicated to improving food safety by building training systems, providing regulation and standards-based curricula, and delivering training for U.S. and international public and private sector food safety professionals. The program includes a series of three week-long sessions, two of which will be held at IFPTI’s global headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan and one to be held in Rockville, Maryland. The fellows will also complete research projects during the year and present their findings at the 2015 Association of Food and Drug Officials Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Stop Counting, Start Living By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last time I checked the calendar, it was August. Not back-to-school, not Halloween, and certainly not Christmas. And yet, if you look in the stores these days, you would think it was time to start digging out the decorations and making those shopping lists. I’m all for preparation and not waiting until the absolute last minute, but isn’t this all a little much? When I was a student in school, I didn’t consider it the “end of summer” until the end of August, as Labor Day approached. The beginning of August meant that summer was still only half over, with

just over a month of fun in the sun remaining. Plenty of beach days, baseball games, outdoor concerts, BBQs… But for parents and teachers, I suppose this isn’t the case. It’s all about the mad dash to get back into some sort of routine. Of course, nowadays, my routine is pretty much the same throughout the year, summer or winter. But still, I try to revel in the slightly laid back atmosphere that this season brings. Instead of driving home in the dark to sit on the couch in front of the TV, the added daylight hours provide some motivation to check out one of the many waterfront dining options

on Long Island, or perhaps attend one of the free summer concerts featured at the area parks. (Just don’t forget to check the weather forecast before heading out!) It’s August 6th. AUGUST 6th. Absorb it. Savor it. Live it. Stop checking the days off the calendar in a manic countdown to the next socalled marker of time… time that, before you know it, will have passed, un-enjoyed. So put away the Christmas lights, hold off on the pumpkin picking and don’t pack the bathing suit away quite yet. Relax. You’ll have plenty of time for all that in a few months. But not now.

The Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts Knowledge Bowl Team placed second in the nation at the American Culinary Federation National Culinary Knowledge Bowl in Kansas City on Sunday July 27th. The competition is based on a student’s culinary knowledge in a Jeopardy format. A team had to win the regional competition to qualify. Suffolk students won the Eastern Division. Other regional team winners included Lake Washington College representing the Western Division, Kendall College representing the Northern division and Guilford College representing the Southern Division. Suffolk bested Kendall College

On August 25th, Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children who are medically fragile will benefit from the Arthur and William J. Memorial 10th Annual Golf Outing. All community members are welcome to attend the event, which will be held at the Nissequogue Golf Club in Saint James. With tee time at 11 a.m., guests will play on the private scenic golf course and enjoy breakfast and lunch. The event will continue at the club house where awards, raffles and a classic

Caregiver Classes Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting “Powerful Tools for Caregivers”, a six-week course unique to the Long Island region. On July 23rd, approximately 50 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 11th Annual Distant Memories Swim. The swim was spearheaded by Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. and to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and swam across the bay to Knollwood Beach in Centerport — a distance of 2.5 nautical miles (approximately three miles). Before taking to the water, each participant gave the names of relatives they were swimming for who suffer from or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. The first swimmer to complete the course was Daphne Hoffman of

Brightwaters, who came in at 1 hour, 10 minutes. This was the first time a woman has accomplished this feat. “This year’s swim signifies a very strong commitment to our cause by all of these men and women, many of whom have been touched by Alzheimer’s,” said Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Chief Executive Officer/ Executive Director, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “Sadly, the number of individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease continues to grow. Demand for training, programs, services and referral sources is at an all-time high. This group of dedicated individuals helps to create awareness and raise funds needed to provide a variety of resources for our Long Island families.” Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local

Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) graduating Eighth Grader, Christopher Liegey scored more than a few good points and some teammate friends for life during his eight years of playing, coaching and refereeing CYO Basketball in the community. This youngster’s dedication and hard work has paid off in countless ways, spilling over into his love of learning and his commitment to community, earning him the Ryan T. Horodnicki Memorial Scholarship for academic excellence, service and athletic ability. Christopher was also granted the Cyrillian Scholarship, sponsored by SSCM’S Rosary Altar Society, which is awarded

based on character and involvement in the community. Also awarded academic scholarships to his top three schools of choice, St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony’s, and Holy Trinity, based on his performance on the Co-Op (Cooperative Admissions exam), young Christopher is well positioned for a bright future indeed! Freedom Of Expression In “Lit.2 Life Chrome,” the latest edition of Greg Kguloian’s ongoing Lit.2 Life cross-curriculum lessons at East Islip High School, the teacher’s freshman and sophomore English classes joined forces to delve into poetry, history and freedom of expression, focusing on the historical poem/song “Donna Donna.” According to student research, “Donna Donna” originated as “Dana Dana,” an anti-Nazi protest song in Yiddish taken from the 1940s musical play “Esterke.” It was later performed in the 1960s as a protest song against

the Vietnam War, made famous by musician Joan Baez. The allegory and metaphor within the song appealed to Kguloian’s students, who used it to fuel discussions about the First Amendment as well as the historic dangers of oppression and censorship. Several students even spurred a reenactment of a famous anti-censorship protest scene from the film “Dead Poets Society.” After researching the history of “Donna Donna” – including Baez’s politically impactful performance in the former Czechoslovakia in 1989 alongside future Czech President Vaclav

Havel – and exploring the First Amendment, Kguloian’s students crafted their own scripts for a mini-movie on the topic and performed them in front of a camera in the school’s video production studio, and later edited the final products. “The students made this lesson their own,” said Kguloian. “I am extremely impressed with their efforts, especially the fact that while I may have created and organized the Lit.2 Life Chrome project, the students did the rest. They did their homework!”

Quartet In Residence The Stony Brook University Department of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of the Calidore String Quartet, hailing from the renowned Los Angeles conservatory the Colburn School, as Quartetin-Residence for the 2014-2015 and 20152016 academic years. The ensemble will join the Emerson String Quartet as members of the faculty, and will also be coached by members of the Emerson Quartet and David Finckel, former cellist with the quartet. “We are thrilled to welcome the Calidore String Quartet to Stony Brook in a new program for young quartets,” said Emerson Quartet violinist Philip Setzer, “It will be a great joy for us to work with

them and it’s exciting to imagine what they will bring to the university and community.” David Finckel, Artistic CoDirector of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, noted, “Today’s classical music world is heavily populated with young string quartet and it’s a rare occasion when one turns heads as convincingly as the Calidore Quartet. This dynamic and intelligent ensemble has already demonstrated skill and maturity beyond their collective years, and they show seemingly endless potential. I know the Calidore will be a stimulating presence in the Stony Brook community, and I very much look forward to contributing to their Stony Brook experience.” This residency is made

possible through the generosity of Erwin and Freddie Staller. In addition to being coached and mentored by the Emerson Quartet, the Calidore String Quartet will take part in outreach programs in Long Island schools funded by the Staller Educational Outreach Endowment and the Barbara N. Wien Endowment for Arts & Education. They will perform on the Stony Brook campus and in the local community, and will coach undergraduate chamber ensembles and collaborate with student composers. Stony Brook University will also sponsor a New York City concert appearance during their second year in residence. The Calidore String Quartet’s commitment to music education - as manifested

in their numerous preconcert talks, postconcert Q&A’s, classroom visits, public school assemblies, traditional master classes and multi-day community residencies - make them an especially good match for Stony Brook. The Calidore String Quartet was formed at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles in 2010 and has amassed several grand prizes in American chamber music competitions including Fischoff, Coleman, Chesapeake, and Yellow Springs. Internationally, the Calidore captured top prizes at the 2012 ARD Munich International String Quartet Competition and the 2012 Hamburg International Chamber Music Competition. The quartet’s performances

and interviews were broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk (Munich) and Norddeutscher Rundfunk (Hamburg) and the group was also featured on German national television as part of a documentary produced by ARD public broadcasting. The quartet has participated in residencies and fellowships at the Banff Centre, Verbier Festival Academy, Aspen Music Festival and McGill International String Quartet Academy. This summer, they are featured as Quartetin-Residence at the Bellingham Festival of Music in Bellingham, Washington. The Emerson String Quartet has a long history of mentoring excellent young string quartets at the beginning

of their highly successful careers, including the St. Lawrence, Artemis, Avalon, Pacifica, Calder, Ying, Borealis and Escher Quartets. “The Emerson Quartet has left a legacy of recordings and performances that represent the pinnacle of string quartet playing,” said Perry Goldstein, chairman of Stony Brook’s Department of Music. Tier Initiative

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented Sheriff Vincent DeMarco with a proclamation on behalf of the Legislature recognizing the success of the Sheriff’s Youth Tier and Reentry Initiative at Tuesday’s General Meeting of the Legislature. Sheriff DeMarco launched the program in 2011 with the goal of reducing youth recidivism by addressing the barriers to reentry and offering young people opportunities for improved outcomes by partnering with youth

service providers through the Youth Reentry Task Force. Participants in the program receive individualized services during their period of incarceration. The Youth Reentry Task Force, which brings together over 40 community and governmental agencies, coordinates postincarceration services, such as case management, housing educational and vocational services which serve to reinforce and build upon the pre-release services. “Presiding Officer

DuWayne Gregory has been a genuine partner in the Task Force’s efforts to reduce youthful crime and recidivism in Suffolk County,” stated Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco. “He understands all of the dynamics of this multifaceted issue, from the affects crime has on communities to the problems faced by troubled youth. More importantly, he is actively involved in our efforts to create meaningful and costeffective solutions to the problems associated with justice-involve youth.”

Service Trip

During the first week in July, twelve students and two teachers from West Islip High School traveled to Antigua, Guatemala for a service trip. The team volunteered with a Minnesota based nonprofit organization called Common Hope. Common Hope sees education as the key to unwind the cycle of poverty. E d u c a t i o n a l opportunities in Guatemala are slim. Only 70 percent of children graduate from sixth grade, 32 percent from junior high, and a mere 17 percent from high school. Common Hope partners with children, families, schools and communities to ensure

that each child can attend school and realize their full potential. In many cases, children are forced to leave school early to help with family responsibilities. To alleviate this, The West Islip Vision Team helped a family build a home because a healthy living environment is vital to a child’s success. For most of the students, this was their first experience with construction. While there, they worked on various projects including building a two room home for a family of seven and participating in cultural exchange opportunities. The group visited schools and led craft projects, baking class and

cheerleading and football clinics. Additionally, each team member accompanied a social worker on home visits to the villages. They traveled with a purpose and were enlightened to the needs of a developing country. This is the fourth time a group from West Islip High School has embarked on this adventure. In the months leading up to the trip, the team raised over $5,000 to help support the work of Common Hope. Furthermore, they brought down five bags of donations and supplies to Guatemala. The eight-day experience was rewarding and life-changing for all.

Grants Approved Rain gardens and cisterns will be installed on two campuses of Suffolk County Community College, at the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood and Ammerman Campus in Selden, to help manage stormwater flow thanks to a $393,043 Green Innovation Grant Program award from the New York State Environment Facilities Corporation that was approved by the Suffolk County Legislature on Tuesday. Construction is expected to begin in November. “Since 2000, our College has implemented more than 50 green initiatives and this latest grant will enable that work to expand. Combining these varied initiatives with grant resources and our recent decision to establish an Office of Sustainability Programs, we are leading and promoting the importance of emerging renewable technologies,”

said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay. President McKay said the project will also serve as an innovative teaching tool that can be embedded into various College curricula. Students in courses such as construction technology, geology, and engineering, will have an opportunity to study and monitor the effectiveness of the project model. Additionally, the project offers unique opportunities for the community at large to learn about these innovative technologies and how they can protect and sustain our environment. The system works by capturing unfiltered and untreated stormwater that is intercepted and redirected into the new rain gardens. The rain gardens absorb and filter a large portion of the stormwater. The water is then captured and stored in cisterns for

later use to irrigate the immediate property and filling irrigation trucks as needed. Overall, the project is expected reduce stormwater runoff by 3,821 cubic feet per year, along with corresponding reductions in sediment, phosphorus and nitrogen. It will also save more than 276,000 gallons of potable water per year, by reducing water consumption required for irrigating College property. This is the fourth major grant Suffolk County Community College has received to improve its environmental sustainability. Previous awards were: the Collegewide Water and Energy Conservation Initiative ($675,000 in 2009), the High-Efficiency Condensing Boilers Initiative ($244,000 in 2010), and the Campuswide Energy Efficiency Project ($306,368 in 2010).

Task Force Honored

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco and members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force received a Proclamation signed by all eighteen County Legislators at their General Legislative Meeting in Smithtown on July 29th. The group was honored for their contributions to the Youth Tier and Youth Reentry Task Force Initiative. Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented the proclamation to Sheriff DeMarco. The Youth Tier and Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force Initiative were launched by DeMarco in September 2011 to

improve outcomes for incarcerated youth in the county jails. Members of the Task Force include Correction Officers, the non-profit community, educators and county employees who work collaboratively to prevent youth from committing future crimes by addressing the root causes of criminal behavior. DeMarco praised the Task Force and the Legislators for their commitment to reducing recidivism among young people cycling through the jail. “We’ve proven that by working together we can get results without expending additional

county funds, and by doing correctional work as it was always intended, we can change these kids’ lives,” stated DeMarco. He also credited the courts, in particular, Judge Fernando Camacho, for helping to find effective alternatives to incarceration for youthful offenders. “I share Judge Camacho’s viewpoint that we can’t keep locking up these 16 year old kids in adult jails and prisons and expect their behavior to change. He added, “I’m grateful to all of our community partners, volunteers and elected officials for their dedication.”
