s part of an English language arts assignment, students in Jennifer Talbot’s class at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School wrote persuasive letters to various local stores and major companies in the hopes of convincing the businesses to send samples of their products to the class. Thanks to the many local businesses who lent their support to this exercise. The class learned a great deal and received many samples in return!

Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane Jr., accompanied by Councilman Steve Flotteron and New York State Senator Phil Boyle, recently dedicated Third Avenue in Bay Shore to the late Ned Baker, a longtime Bay Shore resident and business owner, by renaming the street “Ned Baker’s Way.” The Council Members were joined by Ned’s wife Loretta and his son Jack to

unveil the new memorial street sign. “Ned Baker was a perfect role model within the Town of Islip Community. He was hard working, compassionate, and always made an effort to help those in need,” said Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane Jr. Ned Baker was a graduate of Bay Shore High School and had worked hard to make Bay Shore a better place to live and work. He

purchased and successfully ran a local restaurant/Irish pub known as “Southside Hotel” located on Third Avenue in Bay Shore. Ned’s actions and love for the Bay Shore and Town of Islip community have spoken volumes. He advocated bringing Bay Shore back to its present form. He exempliﬁed the spirit of grace and dignity in providing a place for all those to come to meet and relax together.

My Life in a Bowl Buddy the Betta here… Jamie asked me to fill in for her this week, since she’s been receiving so many reader inquiries regarding my wellbeing. Well, here I am, as requested, in all my turquoisefinned glory, excited to pen my very first guest column. Life in a bowl can be confining, but my human has made it as comfy a home as possible, decking it out with multi-colored gravel and – my favorite feature of all – a tiny plastic plant. Let me tell you, hours of fun can be had squeezing in between those tiny branches, nibbling on the stems and attempting to dig through the gravel to uproot and redecorate. Hours. Endless fun, I tell you. The one complaint I have is

the feeding schedule. I mean, sure she comes and says good morning and everything, but the least she could do is give me a rundown of her schedule, an ETA on dinner… Doing all those laps around my bowl works up an appetite. Back and forth, back and forth – and she wonders why she finds me chewing on the plant at least once a day! As soon as I see that light go on, I know my human is home. Oh boy, oh boy! It’s feeding time! Depending on her level of generosity, I usually find four or five flakes floating atop the water. Depending on my level of hunger, I either inhale them all in one gulp; or, if I’m in a playful mood, I’ll stalk each pellet from every angle, before pouncing and thoroughly chewing and digesting it.

Life is good. In fact, my human keeps telling me that my “half-birthday” is coming, whatever that is, on the same day as her birthday. I’m not certain what that means, but I sure hope there’s cake! I see her unpacking all sorts of goodies and preparing colorful meals when she comes home – but she never shares! I sit with my face pressed against the glass, hoping for just a taste, but alas… counting down the days until this alleged milestone. Til then, it’s been fun filling in for the human. Hopefully, she’ll be back next week so I can go back to my busy schedule of shifting gravel and nibbling on any fingers that happen to find their way into my bowl. A Betta’s life isn’t as easy as it looks. This is Buddy, signing off…

On Tuesday, June 30th, at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 25 in Hauppauge, United Way of Long Island celebrated the Graduation Ceremony of 40 students from the YouthBuild program. Many of these students have overcome difficult challenges in their lives, and now as a result of the education and training they received, they are ready to embark on a new and successful life journey. 2014-2015 YouthBuild graduates were presented their respective certificates from YouthBuild Director Elizabeth Morgan and special guest speaker, recording artist, actor and entrepreneur, James Todd Smith aka LL Cool J. Brentwood graduates include: • Jessica Jones, MultiCraft Core Curriculum (MC3) certificate • Shateah Jones, Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) certificate • Nikeya Jordan, Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) certificate The graduation ceremony was filled with student testimonies, several guest speakers, funders, community partners, family and friends. One of the 20142015 YouthBuild graduate’s stated, “Since enrolling in YouthBuild, so many opportunities have become

Especially when you have a network of a loving family that is YouthBuild Long Island.” A few highlights of the event included, a $200,000 Work Force Grant presentation from JPMorgan Chase & Co. and a surprise appearance and keynote address from Long Islander Mr. James Todd Smith, aka LL Cool J. LL Cool J shared some heartfelt words leaving students inspired to follow their dreams. Additionally, he joined the YouthBuild Director Elizabeth Morgan in presenting the graduates with their certiﬁcates of completion. United Way of Long Island celebrated the achievements of the YouthBuild Long Island Class of 2014-2015. In order for YouthBuild Long Island to successfully prepare graduates for their long term-success with their career choice and personal goals they must complete activities and tasks that focus on Leadership Development, Case Management, Community Service, Education, and Job & Vocational Training. Once completed YouthBuild Long Island graduates are better prepared for their new journey after

YouthBuild. Each graduate will leave with a better comprehension of who they are, who they want to be and will have learned the skill sets to achieve their next set of personal and professional goals. Together, the Class of 2014-2015 completed over 600 community service hours and achieved certification(s) in more than five career fields including: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Billing & Coding, Weatherization & Green Training, Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3), PreApprenticeship Training and Customer Service. Graduates obtained their TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion), increased their numeracy and literacy levels by at least two grade levels and/or achieved a vocational certification. Furthermore, as young leaders in the community, students engaged with elected officials, attended community events, represented the YouthBuild program as community ambassadors, participated in extracurricular activities and gained professional development. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter has announced that her ofﬁce will be holding a poster contest to promote pool safety awareness. Recent incidents, including the tragic drowning of a young girl, prompted the call for increased vigilance and safety measures for residential pools. The poster contest will help spread the message about precautions that everyone can practice to prevent further tragedies.

CHEER CHAMPS - The Islip Town Board recently presented awards to the athletes and coaches of the Long Island Cheer All-Stars Lady Lime team. The girls are part of the Small Youth Level 2 division (ages 8-11), and travel throughout the country competing in cheerleading events. During their 2014-2015 seasons the girls were undefeated at every event, culminating with a national championship win at the National Cheerleading Competition in Virginia Beach.

As part of an English language arts assignment, students in Jennifer Talbot’s class at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School wrote persuasive letters to various local stores and major companies in the hopes of convincing the

businesses to send samples of their products to the class. Frito-Lay, Sweet Frog, Crayola, the San Francisco 49ers football team and Pam’s Ice-Cream Shop of East Islip were among the companies who
