Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I
am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I
attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second wishes. Youth & Justice Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco launched a Youth and Justice Sub-Committee this week as part of his Youth Reentry Task Force. Suffolk County Court Judge Fernando Camacho, who heads the County’s Felony Youth Part, attended the meeting and is working in partnership with the Sheriff on the new
initiative. Town Youth Bureau representatives from seven of Suffolk’s ten townships participated, along with Rev. Roderick Pearson, the Executive Director of the Suffolk County Youth Bureau, Janette Allen-McCombs of SUNY Stony Brook’s School of Social Welfare, Gerard Cairns of FREE, Inc. and Colleen Ansanelli, representing
the County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. “When a young person returns back to their community after spending time in jail, they have a tendency to return to negative influences that will likely land them back in jail or prison. The Youth and Justice Sub-Committee will be our bridge to Suffolk’s
townships in our efforts to connect justice-involved with services in their own communities. Ultimately, this will improve public safety and help these young people lead more productive lives,” stated DeMarco. This summer, Sheriff DeMarco will accompany Judge Camacho on a tour of Suffolk’s youth bureaus to learn more about the
services available in each community. “Through his initiatives focusing on adolescent offenders, Sheriff DeMarco has proven that he is a leader in confronting the challenges facing our county’s juvenile justice system, and I am pleased to work with him in reaching out to our townships to coordinate local efforts to make sure

On July 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its fourth annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. More than 130 participants took part in the event, which raised approximately $130,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care. While on the links, golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hyundai Hole-In-One Challenge. After a round of golf, they enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win raffle and silent auction prizes. Participants were welcomed by the President of the Neuwirth Foundation who spoke about her family’s vision for ADRC and how ADRC continually works to ensure that vision. This year’s honoree, Ron Eagar, CPA, CCIFP, Partner,

inmate rehabilitation programs and coordinating communitybased services for individuals reentering our communities after spending time in jail. Due in part to these efforts, there has been a significant decrease in the county jail population since he first took office. In 2005, the daily jail population averaged close to 2000 inmates, and now that figure is less than 1400. In 2011, Sheriff DeMarco launched the Youth Tier and Youth Reentry Task Force Initiative to improve outcomes for incarcerated youth in the county jails, and the award-winning program has become a national model in the field of corrections. The Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force, which has grown to more than 40 members from the fields of mental health, education, government and corrections, has played an integral role in the program’s success. In June 2014, he was appointed by the Suffolk County Executive to be the Chairman of the County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC). The primary purpose of the CJCC is to reduce crime and recidivism by promoting communication, collaboration, education, systemwide coordination, and decision-making among local juvenile and adult criminal justice agencies and local government, resulting in increased public safety for all of Suffolk County. Habitat Groundbreaking Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of demolition on its very first property in Orient Point. Demolition crews, led by contractors Latham Sand & Gravel and Northfork Sanitation, ran heavy equipment, while future homeowner, Michael Bredemeyer, along with
volunteers and sponsors the Peter K. Ruhry Keys to Hope Foundation and Long Island Board of Realtors – North Fork Chapter were on hand to witness the tearing down of the dilapidated structure and clearing of the property for construction of Habitat’s first affordable home in Orient. A lifelong resident of Orient, Bredemeyer not
only resides in the east end town, but is also actively involved in his community. Bredemeyer is employed by the Orient Beach State Park and serves as an Assistant Parks and Recreation Supervisor. Summer Camp Program County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco announced today that 19 children from Suffolk County will head upstate early Sunday morning for a fun-filled week at the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2014 Summer Camp. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a solid recreational program while fostering a sense of good citizenship. This will mark the 37th year of the camp’s operation. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, which is located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New York State. Sheriff DeMarco, in discussing the objectives and goals of the camp said, “The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp Program is designed to provide a child who ordinarily would not have the chance, an opportunity to go away during the summer.” He added, “The primary objective is to create a positive interaction between the kids attending camp and the officers who participate in the camp programs. We have found from experience that the

Jared Farmer, PhD, an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University, is the 2014 recipient of the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, a national honor awarded by The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. The award recognizes scholars devoted to the humanities in the early stages of their careers whose work shows extraordinary promise and has a significant public component related to contemporary culture. A prolific writer and educator at Stony Brook, Farmer is an environmental historian with special expertise in the American West. He will receive the Hiett Prize and give a lecture on his scholarship at a luncheon at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas on November 12th. “Jared brings to light the hidden histories of landscapes and habitats and the ways human
beings interact with them,” said Dr. J. Larry Allums, Executive Director of the Dallas Institute. “His stillunfolding work in a relatively new field of the humanities is of such a high order that it promises to become a model for others who will follow him.” “I’m honored to receive this recognition of my work,” said Farmer. “My area of scholarship overlaps with landscape history and cultural geography, but my career project is larger. I want to help people see connections between local landscapes and planetary processes.” Farmer has completed two books in his time at Stony Brook: On Zion’s Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape (Harvard, 2008), which won five prizes, including the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians for best-written non-fiction book on an American theme, and Trees in Paradise: A California History (Norton, 2013), which received a John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies. He frequently gives guest lectures and radio interviews. His essays and reviews have appeared in publications such as

Boat Slips Still Available The Islip Town Department of Parks and Recreation has announced that a limited number of boat slips are still available at Town marinas, generally for smaller watercraft. The remaining spaces are reserved for boats that do not exceed 21 feet in length. The available slips are mostly concentrated in East Islip Marina, Bay Shore Marina, and Port O’Call in Sayville, but
availability is scattered throughout the Town’s other facilities. “Boat slips at Islip Town marinas provide access to some of the more historically beautiful waters in the northeast because of their access to the Great South Bay and Fire Island, and many residents assume that all of our slips are claimed,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. “There are a lot of ways to
enjoy our waterways during the summer months, and using a boat slip at our marinas can lead to some unforgettable moments out on the water.” For detailed information about the availability of boat slips in specific marinas, please call 631.224.5648. Each license or permit has a separate application that must be filed and approved, along with a minimal fee for most. “It is imperative, especially during the busy summer season, that everyone follows Town regulations and obtains their licenses and permits
in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for all residents,” said Town Clerk Olga Murray. Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo. Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home,
so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.” Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on
every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly.
