This is in response to participants in the past who would have liked to stay out overnight, in the event they didn’t have fish to weigh in for the first day, or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two. Last year’s competitors took home a combined $145,000 in total prize money, plus custom trophies, with 180 anglers aboard 47 boats competing for top honors. John Lowe aboard Jay Sutphen’s boat “Janusz” hauled in the Heaviest Thresher of the Tournament, a 224-pounder. Scott Shapiro on Matt Fuller’s “Scott Free” caught the Heaviest Mako of the tournament at 205 pounds. A total of eight Makos and one Thresher were weighed last year. The entry fee is $750 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island

Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the tournament. Dockage is on a firstcome, first-served basis. Transient rates for this tournament will be $5.50 per foot up to 59 feet and $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities (electric, water and cable TV) are $30 for 30-amp and single-cord, 50-amp service and $50 for twocord, 50-amp service. High-speed fuel pumps are now available at all slips. Dockage for the tournament is a threenight minimum stay. Suffolk Awarded Grant Suffolk County Community College has been designated as one of seven Entrepreneurial Assistance Programs (EAP) statewide to develop a Veteran Business Assistance Center and will receive a grant of up to $42,000 from Empire State Development (ESD) to enable the center to assist veterans with starting a new business, or to train veterans in the practices of entrepreneurship and prepare them to pursue self-employment opportunities. The Suffolk County Community College center will serve the Long Island Region from the Sally Ann Slacke Corporate Training Center on the college’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. Governor Cuomo committed $350,000 in the 2015-2016 State Budget to invest in the development of EAP Veteran Business Assistance Centers

(VBACs). The other Veteran Business Assistance Centers will be located in: • Adirondack Economic Development – North Country Region • Capital Chamber Foundation / AlbanyColonie Regional Chamber of Commerce – Capital Region • IBERO American Action League – Finger Lakes Region • Renaissance Economic Development Corporation – New York City Region • South Side Innovation Center at Syracuse University – Central New York Region • Washington Heights Inwood Development Corporation – New York City Region New York State’s Entrepreneurial Assistance Program was created in 1987 by the NYS Omnibus Economic Development

Since its inception, the EAP initiative has helped entrepreneurs create new businesses and has provided in-depth assistance to minorities, women, dislocated workers and individuals with a disability interested in starting a business. The EAP establishes centers in local communities to provide instruction, training, technical assistance and support services to individuals who have recently started their own business or are interested in starting a business. The program’s EAP centers are strategically located throughout the state.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. was recently awarded a $5,000 Veterinary Assistance Grant from Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT) to help owners undergoing economic hardships keep their pets healthy and offset costs in emergency medical situations so they are not be forced to surrender or euthanize their beloved dogs and cats. Last Hope is a non-profit organization striving to save death-due, abandoned and stray animals. The all– volunteer, nonprofit cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2014, Last Hope placed 568 cats and 260 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The BCT grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of

Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid; and, hopefully, prevent people from making the heart-breaking decision to give up their pets; or worse, be forced to euthanize four-legged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-A- Feral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission. Having the ability to assist individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently. “The generous BCT grant will enable us to expand our reach. Since most of our funds must be spent on the animals in our care, we’ve only been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets such as a senior Poodle needing extensive dentistry or a cat suffering from kidney stones,” said Stuurman,

“Thanks to BCT we’ll be able to respond to more pleas for veterinary aid.” BCT has been working since 2003 to keep the most vulnerable populations together with their pet companions and provides grants to nonprofit organizations and animal hospices to support these efforts. All too often sick, injured or abused animals die because their caretakers can’t afford to pay for the urgent care needed to save them. When these animals are surrendered to town shelters, their medical issues are such that they may be put down there.

Our tenuous economy has increased the need for veterinary assistance grants. To apply for a BCT Veterinary Assistance Grant via Last Hope, the owner must show need such as disability, unemployment, homelessness or being a senior on a fixed income. Everyone you meet is ﬁghting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reflection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

Nearly 150 New Yorkers came together recently to raise $65,000 in support of Long Island’s agricultural workforce at an event for the HRHCare Foundation and the Agricultural Health Fund. Hosted by Long Island Sustainable Winegrowers, Barbara Shinn and David Page of Shinn Estate Vineyards, and Jonathan Russo and Deborah Grayson, the first annual gathering celebrated Long Island’s iconic wine industry by raising funds to support health care access for its workers and to promote sustainable agriculture on Long Island. “Agriculture is a key economic driver of Long Island’s regional economy and a healthy workforce is key to making it sustainable in the longterm,” said Anne Kauffman Nolon, MPH, President and CEO of Hudson River HealthCare (HRHCare), one of New York’s largest community health center providers. “The funds generously raised by local wine lovers and health care advocates will provide vital medical, dental and behavioral health services to the people who quite

literally put food on our plates and drinks in our glasses. We look forward to an even bigger event next year.” Agriculture is the largest industry on Long Island, contributing nearly $260 million to the local economy, yet farmworkers and their families often struggle to gain access to quality health care despite their outsize economic benefit. Many of these families suffer from poor nutrition, asthma, musculoskeletal conditions, and a lack of preventive care. All the proceeds from the “Honoring the Hands” event go toward a “Day of Health” for agricultural workers and their families, led by HRHCare, which serves more that 45,000 patients and employs nearly 250 people at its seven facilities on Long Island alone. As operators of the only federally qualified health center in Suffolk County, HRHCare provides considerable services for the local agricultural community. “Having healthy workers means having a healthy business, and anything we can

do to support them is a win-win for the local economy, and, in this case, wine lovers,” said Barbara Shinn, founder of Long Island Sustainable Winegrowers and Shinn Estate Vineyards. “I’m enormously proud that the community was able to come together and support Long Island’s workers and the critical services HRHCare provides.” Earlier this week, HRHCare celebrated its 40-year record of providing essential health services to New York’s communities with a rededication ceremony at its flagship facility in Peekskill. Joined by Congresswoman Nita Lowey (NY-17), the ceremony honored the legacy of four women who came together in the early 1970s to address the lack of health care services in their community and founded the Peekskill Ambulatory Health Care Center. On Monday, it was renamed in honor of Reverend Jeannette J. Phillips, the organization’s first board president in 1975 and the last living “founding mother.”

With the enthusiastic support of principals, parents and students, East Islip’s Box Tops for Education program submitted record numbers of box tops during the last school year. As a result, PTA representative Anne-Marie Orgera, who coordinates efforts for the program at both John F. Kennedy and

Timber Point elementary schools, was named “Box Tops for Education Coordinator Rocks” winner for the northeastern United States. In the Box Tops Super Heroes contest, Timber Point submitted the highest number of Box Tops since the school started collecting them, while

JFK’s Box Tops cereal box collection container was featured on the Box Tops website and both schools garnered special notices in a Box Tops T-shirt contest. Celebrating Summer The Fresh Air Fund’s Western Suffolk and Nassau County Volunteer Committees held a summer get-together on July 20th at Adventureland Amusement Park. Local host families and their Fresh Air children enjoyed a dinner together

Scholarship Winner Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently issued a proclamation honoring Emmanuel Euceda of Central Islip for his selection as this year’s winner of the David E. Ortiz Scholarship. Created to honor the life of David E. Ortiz, who died in 2002, the scholarship is awarded each year to a Central Islip High School senior who has demonstrated perseverance in the face of a learning disability. Euceda, who will attend Suffolk County Community College this fall, was awarded $2,000 and a laptop computer. He plans to become a police officer, which he attributed to having “always been aware of my surroundings.” “Having graduated from

with dozens of members or just small groups of friends all added up to nearly 2,000 volunteers removing literally tons of litter and debris from their communities. Add to that another 800 people planting flowers and the result is a beautiful town.

(SBPLI) announces that the Seaford FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Team #92 (the “Sea Lions”) is hosting an environmental cleanup at the Francis T. Purcell Preserve in Hempstead, New York on Saturday, August 8th, at 8 a.m. The primary habitat for many native plants and animals, this Hempstead plains area once occupied more than 40,000 acres in central Nassau County. Recognizing the years of neglect the preserve has endured, the team

members felt it was time to restore the park to its original grandeur. All Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and Junior FLL teams are welcome to participate in the cleanup. The Francis T. Purcell Preserve is located at 101 James Doolittle Boulevard in Uniondale, New York, near the Nassau Coliseum and Long Island Marriott. In addition to a call for volunteers, SBPLI is also requesting donations of bottled water, first aid items and garbage bags to help with the cleanup efforts.

A total of 45 exceptional young musicians from the Islip School District were chosen to perform in this year’s Suffolk County Music Educators Association All-County Festival. The student-musicians were selected for AllCounty based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Festival. Outstanding performers were recommended by their school music teachers for All-County consideration, and the honored students were then selected from hundreds of applicants from districts across Suffolk. Students prepared for the festival with their school music teachers, and then participated in a series of rehearsals that culminated

in a concert. Selected this year from Commack Road Elementary School were trumpeter Kevin Czekaj and horn player Christian Vitucci for band; bassist Leah Cyran and violinist Timothy Mak for orchestra; and vocalists Ryan Van Nostrand, Sophia Regina and Genna Schifter for chorus. Selected from Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School were flutist Hannah Evans for band; violinist Erin Boyd for orchestra; and vocalists Keera Kittles and Hailey Kuo for chorus. Granting Wishes Sports legends and celebrities participated in the Marty Lyons Foundation’s (MLF) 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, July 13th, at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The event was held in support of the Foundation’s mission to grant special wishes for children with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses. The day began with a special visit from Shaun Carroll, a child from Commack suffering from a debilitating illness. Shaun and his mother Diane publicly thanked The Marty Lyons Foundation for granting their family a second wish this past May, a trip to Universal Studios in Florida. Shaun’s brother, Kevin, who suffers from

the same illness, was granted a wish in 2013 to go to Give Kids the World in Orlando. Another Foundation wish child, Michelle Izzo of Wantagh, and her mother Fortunata attended the awards ceremony during the evening reception, where they received special recognition. Michelle, who was diagnosed with leukemia, was granted her wish to go to Disney World in 2014 with her family. She has since undergone a heart transplant in January of this year. Foundation supporters were recognized and honored during the reception. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, received The Bill Gibney Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was renamed to honor the memory of Mr. Gibney, the first president of The Marty Lyons Foundation Board of Directors, who recently passed away. His tremendous efforts still impact the Foundation today. “Marty Lyons is an inspiration and the Foundation is doing important work for children and for families. I have been a supporter for many years and have met wish children and I have watched Marty interact with them. Receiving this recognition at the

30th annual golf event is a special moment for me,” said former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The Foundation also honored this year’s Man of the Year Bobby Jordan, President of LI Sanitation Equipment, and recognized former NFL player Erik McMillan for his “positive influence in the game of life.” The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Lyons’ determination led to the establishment of the Foundation after experiencing three lifealtering events in March of 1982. These events forced him to “see the

frailty, unfairness and the wonder of life.” With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed The Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since that time the Foundation has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide support to their families. The Marty Lyons Foundation provides wishes to children aged three to 17 years old who have been diagnosed as having terminal or lifethreatening illnesses. MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a second wish to a deserving child who may need the hope and inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, The Marty Lyons Foundation has

granted over 7,100 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the Foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. The event allowed veterans and their famlies to pick out 300 pairs of shoes to help them in their time of need. “We were grateful
