Federal Funding Approved Congressman Lee Zeldin announced that a $180,000 federal grant has been awarded to Francis Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, New York, which is home of the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard. The federal grant, secured through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be used to fund phase one of a much needed four-phase project to construct a 4,900 square foot contract air traffic control tower, which will replace the existing tower that does not meet current building codes
and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Phase one is a site selection study. Congressman Zeldin said, “The 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton has a long and distinguished history of service to the community and our country. The tower that is currently at Gabreski, which has been around since the 1940s, will be replaced by a new tower with the necessary level of communications equipment and safety upgrades. We must
ensure that the Gabreski facilities are always kept in top condition, as the 106th Rescue Wing plays a crucial role in protecting our national security and implementing emergency response requirements. This grant will provide Suffolk County with the funding necessary to start the process of replacing the air traffic control tower.” Since 2015, Congressman Zeldin, who has visited Gabreski Airport multiple times and viewed the deteriorated condition of the tower firsthand, has
been part of the bipartisan coalition in Congress working to protect contract towers, especially those that play an important national security role, such as Gabreski tower, from proposed FAA cuts and closures. The Congressman has been working closely with House colleagues on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and Aviation Subcommittee, Suffolk County officials, as well as past and current base commanders to secure federal funding for the new tower. In December 2016, Congressman
Zeldin joined colleagues in the House, sending a letter to then President-elect Trump to support contract towers, and highlighting the importance of this program in saving taxpayer money, protecting aviation safety, and in providing air traffic services to the military. Most recently, Congressman Zeldin was joined by 90 lawmakers in a successful request calling on the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund contract towers. Just this week, the transportation appropriation bill approved
by the committee contained $162 million for the contract tower program, which is a $3 million increase from the prior year. Following the completion of stage one, there will be an environmental assessment that takes place in phase two, as well as the design stage in phase three. Phase four will be the construction of the new tower. Overall, the project is expected to cost approximately $5 million.

Such is the beauty of the art. Inspiration is everywhere, if you choose to be open to it. It’s been something of a running joke in my family for years that I tend to quietly observe the interactions of those around me, storing away the nuances of particular events for a later date when they will, inevitably, wind up in a column. While I can’t say I am ever consciously taking mental notes, I suppose the comings and goings of others do find their way into my writings from time to time. There is a quote I’ve come across that I believe speaks to the art of writing quite accurately:
entire stories be derived from the briefest instant. It’s all in the approach. Just as photographs capture the visual of a moment for posterity, words capture the pure essence behind it. They exist separately, and are at once complementary. Perhaps that is the source of my fascination with both. To be able to elicit an emotion whether positive, negative or somewhere in between - is always the ultimate goal. To achieve that is the greatest sign of success for anyone in the arts. The process to reach that level is a never-ending one, to be continuously tweaked and modified in the quest for perfection, for meaning. May we all find it someday.

This summer, thousands of children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities along the

The shoreline of Long Island’s North Fork recently got a cleanup, thanks in part to the efforts of the Cutchogue, Greenport and Love Lane Mattituck offices of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, one of the nation’s leading realtors. The Daniel Gale Sotheby’s team, partnering with Cornell Cooperative Extension, combed the shoreline collecting all sorts of marine debris. But their support of the Cornell Cooperative Extension did not end with the beach cleanup,
materials to sculpt environmentally conscious art, in this case, whale sculptures fashioned from the beach debris. The resulting whale sculptures will be auctioned off at the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Taste + Tour Fundraiser on August 18th, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Cornell Cooperative Extension. For the time being, the whales are on display in the Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty North Fork offices’ window this summer. Windows were designed by local artists Giuliana Buono, Juliane Van Gorden, and Nina Lentini.

The students who were inducted into the troupe have participated in the drama program in various ways, whether by performing on stage, playing in the pit orchestra or as a member of the backstage crew. The troupe also handed out awards to recognize excellence in performance among its members. Congratulations to the inductees and award winners!
Walk of Dimes Fundraiser
This past spring, the Bay Shore Middle School Tri-M Honor Society participated in a 5K walk for the March of Dimes at Jones Beach. The Society raised $1,200 for this charity, which is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth
and infant mortality. 8th Grader Rachel Wright said, “The walk for babies was nothing like I thought it would be, seeing everyone and hearing their stories, meeting new people, it was amazing. The walk itself was very refreshing, I would love to do it again.” Tri-M President, Mallory
Morton said, “The walk for babies was such an amazing experience for me. It was my first time being with such a large group of people who felt so strong about a cause. I enjoyed everyone’s company greatly and hope to participate in other events like this one.”
At the June 21st, Bay Shore Board of Education meeting, the Board recognized the Bay Shore High School Mock Trial Team for its victory in the Suffolk County Championship. Two representatives
from the Suffolk County Bar Association joined the Board in honoring the students. High School Mock Trial Co-Coordinator Glenn P. Warmuth and Academy of Law Dean Patrick McCormick presented the team with a
plaque. Members of the team thanked the Bar Association for its donation of $1,000 to help cover the cost of attending the New York State Mock Trial Competition in Albany.
GARDINER MANOR ART SHOW - As the school year drew to a close, the artwork created throughout the year by scholars at Gardiner Manor School was put on display. Colorful creations filled the gymnasium, the art classroom and adorned the hallways. Parents and families had an opportunity to walk through the gallery to see the amazing work created by their children.
Patrick Vierling graduated from Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School in June with awards and scholarships galore! There were no surprises here considering Patrick’s history of academic excellence paired with his commitment to community service. This ambitious young man has been on the short path toward success throughout his years at SSCM, from his kindergarten days through his involvement in SSCM’s 8th grade accelerated
algebra program. Patrick has been an active member of SSCM parish and school community, serving as an Altar Server for several years and acting in a volunteer capacity at every major SSCM event, from Parish Outreach food drives to Breakfasts with Santa. In addition to his academic success, Patrick has rounded out his thrust for learning and community time with a healthy dose of athletics, having enjoyed three
years on SSCM’s Cross Country Team throughout his middle school years. He was also a member of SSCM’s Shakespeare troupe, a member of SSCM’s Distinguished Scholars, and was in the Gifted and Talented Program at SSCM. With his choice of high school acceptance at Holy Trinity, St. Anthony’s and St. John the Baptist High School, Patrick will be happy to attend St. John the Baptist in the fall, having earned a Coop Scholarship based on his CHSEE (Catholic High School Entrance Exam) scores! If that weren’t enough, Patrick also managed to capture several other honors, including an SSCM Senior Citizens Scholarship, awards for Altar Service and Excellence in Social Studies, a Parents Association Scholarship and the Monsignor Rooney Scholarship from the Holy Name Society. Library Media Specialist Honored
Islip High School library media specialist Gina Seymour was named a “Mover & Shaker” in the library industry by the national publication Library Journal. In a recent issue, Library Journal chose 52 outstanding professionals committed to providing excellent service and shaping the future of libraries. Seymour was selected because
of her commitment to the profession and for her unique inclusive programming. Seymour’s MakerCare initiative, using the school library makerspace to teach teens about social action and civic engagement, has inspired students to make needed items to be donated to community and global agencies. Seymour, who has served
as Islip’s library media specialist for 12 years, was the recipient of the Suffolk School Library Media Association’s 2014 School Librarian of the Year award and is also an adjunct professor at the St. John’s University Department of Library and Information Science. Seymour is currently working on a book, “Makers with a Cause,” scheduled to be published in 2018. “It was an honor and a humbling experience to be included among this distinguished list of librarians,” said Seymour. “With the rise of library makerspaces across the country, I am pleased to bring attention to our inclusive practices and inspiring service model as components of maker education.”

Theresa Constantine is all smiles this summer and for good reason! The proud alum graduated from Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School in June with more certificates than a girl can hold. She’s led a rich and fulfilling academic career thus far, getting involved in a wide array of so many of the extracurricular and athletic activities the school has to offer. Theresa has played violin at SSCM for four years and has participated in the NYSSMA Music Festival (New York State School Music Association) twice
during her time at SSCM. Theresa has been very involved in SSCM Parish, as well, volunteering at events like Breakfast with Santa and food collections for Parish Outreach, as well as serving as an altar server at SSCM for the past three years. Her involvement in SSCM’s Chess Club, Drama Club, performance in SSCM’s Shakespeare Festival troupe and the school’s Cross Country Team have made for a wellrounded experience. With a $1,000 high school grant in her pocket, Theresa is excited to be
attending St. John the Baptist High School in the fall, where she will continue to play the violin in SJB’s orchestra and join the school’s Cross Country Team. The young lady was on her feet quite a bit at SSCM’s Awards Ceremony, earning a Parents Association Scholarship, an award for Altar Service and one for Excellence in Music. The highlight of the day came when Theresa was named as the recipient of SSCM’s Cyrillian Award, a unique honor for the student hand-selected by SSCM’s Principal, Sister Susan Snyder, and based on all around academics and service. Theresa’s name will be added to the names of former recipients of the honor, on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the halls of the school for posterity. We wish Theresa continued success and we look forward to her coming back to visit and sharing future successes!

Phase I Approved Phase I of the Heartland Town Square development project was approved by the Islip Town Board today, marking the culmination of years of research and public comment covering all aspects of the proposal. The vote follows a public hearing held in April, where 144 people signed up to speak, including nearly 1,700 comments submitted via the Town’s website. “This project has been investigated from every possible vantage point, and the Board believes that the Heartland development represents an opportunity for our Town and for Long Island,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “No other project in the Town’s history has faced the scrutiny that has been imposed upon Heartland, and part of that has been providing opportunities for public comment throughout the past few years at critical junctures.” “We would like to thank the Islip Town Supervisor and the Town Board, for all of their hard work and dedication in approving our application. We look forward to working with the Town to build this exciting development, which will set the standard as a place where both our young adults and empty nesters will be able to live, work and play in one place,” said the project’s developer, Jerry Wolkoff. In the months after the Public Hearing, the Town has made documents available outlining the
Heartland proposal in order to give residents as much information as possible. Residents can continue to view these documents by visiting the Town’s website at www. islipny.com. Phase I of the plan involves developing 113 acres of the Pilgrim State property into a mixeduse area that includes residential, retail, and office facilities. Phase I, and all future development at the site, will continue to be subject to stringent environmental review and oversight by multiple agencies. Town of Islip officials initiated unprecedented community outreach through all social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, written communication and the Town’s website. A public informational meeting was conducted for the benefit of the Town Board and for the public, to listen to an extensive presentation by the Town’s Planning Commissioner and department staff, illustrating the scope of the Heartland project and the recommendations of the Town’s Planning Board. The environmental review process culminated with the unanimous adoption of a finding statement by the Town Board back in November 17th, 2014. The Town Planning Board then held a public hearing on April 16th, 2015 and, after much review, adopted its
recommendation August 18th, 2016. By law, the application was then required to be reviewed by the Suffolk County Planning Commission, which also held a public hearing on January 4, and continued on February 1 of 2017, when the County Planning Commission adopted a resolution approving the application. The Town Board public hearing for the Change of Zone was held on April 26th, 2017, at which time the public hearing was closed and the board reserved decision. After much consultation and review with the planning commissioner and staff, the board meeting for the vote on the project was scheduled for Tuesday, July 18th at 6 p.m.

10th Place in Film Challenge A trio of Islip High School video production students – Selia Mercado, Nancy Pramanand and Lauryn Valdez – took 10th place in New York State for their superhero-themed short film “The Masked Monitor,” competing in the prestigious and grueling 10 Day School Film Challenge. The three young filmmakers were also co-awarded Best Use of Music in a Video, and received a certificate for their accomplishments. “This was a tremendous success, considering that it was Islip’s first year in the 10 Day School Film Challenge as well as our first full year offering the video production class,” said teacher Mike Reilly. “We are truly proud and excited about our current
accomplishments as well as what the future will entail for us and Islip, as several of our video production students want to pursue careers in the video production, advertising and communications fields.” The 10 Day Film Challenge, which evolved from the concept behind the 48 Hour Film Project, required participants to write, shoot, edit and score a movie in just 10 school days, as well as preparing a screenplay and movie poster, all while working only during video class. No work was allowed after school, at night, on weekends or at home. The state competition drew 70 film entries submitted by 29 high schools, with the top five films advancing
to the national finals. Nationwide, approximately 1,800 films were submitted “On day one, the groups picked a genre out of a hat,” said Reilly, explaining the process. “That morning, we were also emailed the main character’s name and backstory, line of dialogue, prop and cinematic technique that all needed to be incorporated into our stories.” “This project was a difficult and grueling one, but enjoyable and challenging at the same time,” said Pramanand. “I want to study film and editing in college, so this type of project was great for my resume as well as challenging my skill sets so far.”
