When did packing become such a source of stress? Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before flight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way. Not so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever

hassles come along with our “relaxing” vacations. Having never flown before, this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already. But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs
slightly less than a 12 yearold. Because, let’s face it – you can pack it, but can you carry it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all. By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up. One can only hope.

CHECK PRESENTATION - The Fourth Annual 5K Run for Veterans at MacArthur Airport was the most successful race at the airport to date. A record-breaking 2,400 people signed up to participate as runners and walkers, and along with sponsorships from more than 100 companies raised over $120,000 for 9-1-1 Veterans. This local organization is dedicated to assisting Long Island veterans who are experiencing short-term emergencies, often as they struggle to cope with the difficult challenges of re-entering civilian life after serving in combat areas.

For the third year, five talented Long Island music students will receive a unique opportunity to study and perform this summer at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The Usdan Center/Bethpage Scholars in the Arts program gives accomplished students who otherwise couldn’t attend Usdan, the opportunity to study at the country’s largest notfor-profit summer arts day camp. The students were chosen for their fine musicianship and for their achievements as outstanding representatives of their communities. Usdan’s Executive Director, Dale Lewis, recently spoke of the program’s track record of success: “We are proud to continue this unique partnership with Bethpage Federal Credit Union, one of our region’s most prominent leaders in corporate philanthropy. Kirk Kordeleski, President and CEO, and his wonderful staff, have given a great opportunity to talented young Long Island musicians, and we are delighted to continue this wonderful collaboration.” Kerry Discioarro, Coordinator of the program, adds “We are particularly excited about this year’s students, who combine amazing qualities of musical talent, academic excellence and fine character.” The Usdan/Bethpage program is unique in that five Bethpage community branches will, in effect, “adopt” one of the program’s students, with each receiving recognition in their Bethpage community branch for the remainder
of the year. The students were introduced to their Bethpage branch sponsors at a June reception at Usdan Center. “Bethpage is proud supporter of Usdan and its many invaluable initiatives and programs that offer countless benefits to the Long Island community and its many young artists,” said Kirk Kordeleski, President & CEO, Bethpage. “This unique scholarship program provides five deserving art students, who otherwise would not be able to do so, the opportunity to study on the world-class Usdan campus. I am very excited for each of them.” The winners of the Usdan/Bethpage Scholar in the Arts program are: from Huntington, Jordan Williams, a Junior at Elwood John Glenn High School. He will study Trumpet and Chorus at Usdan, performing this summer with Band IV; from Melville, Cara Jacobson is a Junior at Half Hollow Hills East High School. She comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with the Senior Chorus and the Select Chamber Choir. From North Babylon, Abraham Pierre is an Eighth Grade student at Robert Moses Middle School. He will study Tenor Saxophone this summer, and will perform with Band IV and in the Jazz Ensemble as well; from Commack, Joseph Tanay-Noto is a Junior at Commack High School. A cellist, he comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus; and from Levittown, Jordi Ariel Lotito is a Senior at WT Clarke High School. A violinist, she comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus.

Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island also has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. They are the most crucial part to Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants
scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything from the smallest tick to the largest shark can be found along the Fire Island National Seashore. In my 6 years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals with a presence on Fire Island. A small apartment in an urban town Insures he is still viable in spite of his years. A bus to board, A community of familiarity reassures him of his independence. Minutes fly by – chores to finish before the end of my day. He reaches for my hand and says “thank you” and I knew what he meant. His eyes conveyed gratitude for my time, and when he smiled, I witnessed a glimmer of a younger man. The sentiment “take care” is spoken, he softly says he’s hopes he can visit soon. Once again, he smiles. “I’ll be looking for you,” I say and I return the smile.

There was much to celebrate in the Town of Islip today, with the long-awaited and much anticipated grand re-opening of Islip Beach, located at the end of South Bay Avenue in Islip. Supervisor Tom Croci was joined by Town Board Members in cutting the ribbon to the new and improved facility that had suffered devastating damage from Super Storm Sandy in October, 2012. “We stand here today to reopen one of our greatest treasures here in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Croci. “Islip Beach has a long and important history in our community, and is a special place for so many of us. The overwhelming damage incurred here was a great concern to all Town officials, and getting it open and operational for residents to use as quickly as possible was important to each and every one of us.” Councilman and Parks Liaison Anthony Senft echoed Supervisor Croci’s sentiments. “Good government was at the forefront of every decision made relating to this massive reconstruction project. And by working together, today we open the gates to a new and improved Islip Beach.” Islip Beach, which was donated to the Town by the Havermeyer Family, opened in 1960, and has served as a bathing beach for decades. Before Super Storm Sandy, it featured a concession stand, pavilion, playground,
restrooms, outdoor shower and gazebo. The October 2012, hurricane wreaked havoc on the popular bay beach, causing nearly $2 million in damages, which included the uprooting of the concession from its foundation, unusable and unsafe boardwalks, and a beachfront strewn with storm debris. The Town Board approved the reconstruction project
in May 2013, awarding the contract to Bensin Contacting, the highest responsible bidder. Work at the beach began almost immediately, and included the demolition of the concession, reconstruction and repair of boardwalks, the pavilion and gazebo, the installation of some new playground equipment, as well as a major cleanup of the bay and beach.

They will also be responsible for setting up before and cleanup afterwards. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for children and young adults ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence
through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment. “Despite a blizzard, unending rain, and incredible heat, the Town forged ahead with reconstruction to create an even more beautiful beach,” Councilman Steve Flotteron said. The new Islip Beach now boasts a concession facility that includes handicapped bathrooms, showers and ramps and that is equipped with an energy efficient lighting system. Ramps, railings, and boardwalks are made from Ipe wood, a dense Brazilian hardwood that is used for its durability, performance and density, and that is naturally fire, insect, moisture and movement resistant. The cost of the project is $1.76 million, with the majority of funding to come from FEMA. “We thank Islip residents for their patience during this recovery period as we worked to improve our entire Parks and Recreation system, post Sandy,” said Councilman John Cochrane, Jr. “The devastation to Islip Town as a whole was mind boggling,” noted Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “Islip Beach was one of several Town facilities in need of major repair caused by Super Storm Sandy. Slowly, surely and responsibly, we are chipping away at the damage in a concentrated effort to give Islip residents back the Town that they know, love and deserve.”

Students in teacher Rena Costello’s home and career skills classroom at East Islip Middle School explored the world of organic farming during a late spring visit from acclaimed organic growers Homecoming Farm. The farm’s executive director, Elizabeth Keihm, discussed the benefits of eating locally and supporting local farms;
explained important farming concepts like companion planting, natural pest control, humus use and the Native American farming tradition of the “three sisters” (corn, beans and squash); and displayed colorful heirloom vegetables for the students to examine. Homecoming, now in its 17th season as a Community Supported
Agriculture organization, grows more than 100 different kinds of vegetables on the Sisters of St. Dominic’s Amityville grounds. With CSAs, consumers can purchase local, seasonal food directly from farmers by purchasing a “share.” The farm then provides a weekly box or basket of seasonal produce during the farming season.
