Islip food drive to send all donations to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank churches, local stores and community sources. “This support helped pull us through the early months of Covid when the food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which brought in 24,000 donations and enabled us to continue.” Food insecurity is a serious matter, said one organizer, and we also try to keep the food drops light enough to draw people in, adding that last December even Santa showed up to help sort. “The ultimate goal, after all, is to feed the hungry, so you want people to come,” she said. The food drives are nonsectarian; you do not need to be a parishioner or an Episcopalian to donate. In fact, many conduct little food drives by approaching neighbors, friends and family--then bring it all to us on the day of the food drive. We, in turn, send it to God’s Provisions. Some suggested items include: pasta, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, cereal,
mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stuffing mix, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed, not prepared) jello, apple sauce, canned vegetables and fruit, kidfriendly treats, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, toiletries, pet food, baby products, etc. Please don’t donate anything that can spoil--even chocolate can be iffy because if it’s hot, it can melt. Legislator Gonzalez Honors 8 High School Students With The Inclusive Leadership Award Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez recently honored eight distinguished students in both the Brentwood and Central Islip school districts with the “Inclusive Leadership Award” at the Town of Islip Branch NAACP’s first Annual Juneteenth Celebration. Now celebrated as the longest running African American holiday, Juneteenth honors the fight for racial equality in the United States and the tremendous growth we have seen as a nation. Despite our growth, we must use Juneteenth as a reminder to
keep fighting against racial injustices. This year the “Inclusive Leadership Award” went to students who embody the fight for social justice and continue to work towards the betterment of their communities. These students are Brianna Simpkins, Anthony Chica, Javed Chowdhury, and Andrew Whittingham of Brentwood High School, and Ritchelle Exavier, Ocasi Amene, Nahyma Metelus, and Sean McDonald of Central Islip High School. “Juneteenth is an important date in American
history and should be recognized so that everyone can be educated about its significant both at the time and in the present day, said Legislator Gonzalez. “Congratulations to all our winners and thank you for helping to make our community a better place!” “In order to raise a generation that values inclusive leadership over exclusive leadership and exclusionary leadership, we must start them when they are young,” said Islip Town Branch NAACP President Billy Moss.

Before his untimely death in 1981, singer-songwriter and philanthropist Harry Chapin established Long Island Cares, a food bank dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry population. That said, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, New York, will hold a driveby food drop on Saturday, July 24 from 9 AM to 1PM. The food drop, which will be held on the sidewalk in front of the church doors, will send all donations to God’s Provisions, a Long Island Cares affiliate. Volunteers will be available to take donations, should anyone wish not to get out of his/ her car. There will even be a special musician presentation by the Cursillo players. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources to God’s Provisions, adding that “They also obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase.” God’s Provisions gets additional support from

Islip High School recently honored Class of 2016 alumna Erika Macrelli, a member of the school’s ecology-oriented Keep Islip Clean club, by dedicating a new bridge in the school courtyard to her memory. The ceremony featured a ribbon-cutting by Macrelli’s family and the release of more than a thousand ladybugs into the courtyard’s Insect Hotel. “Within a day or two of learning about Erika’s passing last December, teachers, community members and 2016 alumni were already asking what could be done to recognize a student who brought a luminous spirit and beautiful smile with her whenever she walked into the high school,” said
science teacher and KIC club adviser Wayne Mennecke. “The new bridge design was chosen with input from the Macrelli family for its sunrise pattern, which expresses hope, optimism and anticipation. It was assembled by KIC students and placed above the courtyard pond so that future classes of Islip students can continue to appreciate this spot the way Erika did as a member of KIC. The plaque affixed to the bridge is inscribed with Erika’s name and the phrase ‘Forever Loved,’ a perfect description for how Islip feels about Erika today and always. Islip always finds a way to work together as a community in support of a family in need. That level of kindness

Benefits Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received
surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.
The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

East Islip Girls Track And Field Team Makes History East Islip High School’s girls varsity track and field team won their first league championship since 2016, defeating Westhampton Beach on June 4 by a score of 80-60. Building on this victory, the Lady Redmen continued to make history by hosting the division championships for the first time on June 9, and winning the first division championship in school history. East Islip scored a whopping 113 points, far ahead of the 72 points tallied by the second-place team. East Islip’s squad was led by division champion Joy Petersen in the 2000-meter steeple chase and Hannah Smalley in the 800-meter. The 4x400-meter relay team of Grace Micali, Jenna Scandale, Olivia Simonetti and Smalley won the division championship and set a new school record time of 4:09.35. The 4x800meter team of Hailey DeHaas, Petersen, Danielle Simonetti and Sam Tucci also won the division championship with a time of 10:00.84. The 4x100meter relay team of Kayla Kniff, Melissa Mirabelli, Gianna Motto and Ayanna O’Neal took 4th place in a season best time of 52.84 seconds.
Individual scorers included Deirdre Carney (second place in the pentathlon), Kniff (fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles), Motto (fourth in the 100-meter dash), Petersen (second in 1,500-meter), Scandale (fourth in the 400-meter and fifth in the 200-meter), Danielle Simonetti (second in both the 800-meter and 2,000-meter steeplechase), Olivia Simonetti (second in high jump and third in 800-meter), Smalley (third in 1,500-meter), Tucci (fifth in the 3,000-meter), Sophia Worst (fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles) The Lady Redmen concluded their season on June 17 at the Section XI individual championships. Olivia Simonetti high jumped 5 feet 1 inch to place fifth overall. Scandale ran a personal record time of 60.33 to take sixth overall. Smalley continued her record-breaking season by taking third overall in the 800-meter with a time of 2:16.2, capping off a remarkable season in which Smalley established herself as the best 800-meter runner in school history, shattering the previous school record by over four seconds. The highlight of
the Suffolk County meet was the performance of the 4x800 meter relay team of Petersen, Danielle Simonetti, Olivia Simonetti and Smalley, who won their race by a commanding 20 seconds, earning the title of county champions. Their time of 9:25.99 was the fastest in school history, and it was the first time in East Islip history that a relay team won the county championship. This 4x800 meter relay team finished their season ranked No. 1 on Long Island and No. 3 in New York State. “This season was outstanding, and without question, the best the school has ever seen,” said coach John Reynolds. “Every day, the girls came out with a purpose and the results proved that. The bigger the meet, the better the result. They yearned for the best competition and when given the opportunity, showed they were the best kids to run in Suffolk County. I could not be prouder to have coached these wonderful young ladies. Their effort and determination showed me that they will not only be successful on the track but in whatever they put their focus to in life.”

A Video Worth Playing on Repeat Ready, set, action! There’s no shortage of talent in the Brentwood Union Free School District and the most recent example of this comes in the form of a studentcreated PSA by senior, Cihara Jaimes Satudio. For her work, Cihara was awarded first place by TeenPSA.org for her work titled “Deaf Ears” and received a proclamation from Legislator Susan Berland of District 16 for her video submission for the “The Truth about Stimulant Drinks” PSA contest. “I am forever in awe of the talent that exists within our community and the number of opportunities our students have to showcase those talents,” said Richard Loeschner, Superintendent of Schools. “Congratulations Cihara on this tremendous achievement and the
multiple honors you’ve received for your work. We can’t wait to see what you do next.” “If I had one word to describe Cihara, it would be ‘devoted’,” stated Dr. Sequoyah Wharton, Media Communications Club Advisor and media communications teacher. “After being introduced to the club by ENL teacher, Ms. Contreras, Cihara was able to overcome several obstacles in learning English, as it was not her first language. Despite that challenge, she quickly flourished. For every assignment given throughout the course, Cihara dedicated numerous hours and focused on capturing the right shots, composition, lighting and sound. Cihara’s talents are one of a kind.” This is not the first time Cihara’s extraordinary work has been recognized.
Last year, Cihara placed second for her submission to TeenPSA.org. For this year’s piece submitted to TeenPSA.org, Cihara spent approximately 40 hours filming and editing the emotional work that resonated with her peers. Cihara’s tenure in the Media Communications Club has allowed her to hone both her visual technology skills and has been a tremendous asset to her during her time in the ENL program. In addition to being a member of the video club, Cihara has been a student in the media communications course offered at Brentwood High School, allowing her to supplement what she learns from being a member of the club. Cihara will be attending SUNY Old Westbury College in the fall where she will be pursuing a major in communications.

Islip High School’s Clash of the Classes, a schoolwide competition of skits, games and athletic challenges, was held on June 11. Members of the Student Union – led by officers Vanessa Alvarenga, Yenifer Fernandez, Scarlett Garcia, Sophie Sabatino and Briana Wood – and the Principles of Leadership class collaborated to create an exciting event
that included an obstacle course, water balloon toss and a “teacher edition” of musical chairs. Gradelevel advisers worked for weeks with their classes to showcase Islip’s talented students in decade-themed skits. The Clash of Clashes began with Tyler Cirulnick singing a beautiful rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner,” and
the day ended with a nostalgic song from the seniors, “We’re All in This Together,” and the final round of a rock-paperscissors tournament. “It was incredible to see all of our students smiling, laughing and cheering together for the first time in over a year,” said Student Union adviser Meghan Stern.

Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important
for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) – Suffolk County’s largest not-for-profit provider of programs, services, and advocacy for people facing mental health challenges – is offering an Emotional Support Helpline staffed by trained crisis counselors who help callers talk through their emotions and find resources to help them cope with challenges associated with COVID-19. MHAW is serving as a Suffolk County partner agency in the helpline initiative hosted by NY Project Hope, a program of the New York State Office of Mental Health. The Emotional Support Helpline is 631-471-7242 ext. 1800. Trained crisis counselors are available Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. All helpline conversations are free, confidential, and anonymous. “The Emotional Support Helpline will connect you with someone who has been trained to hear what you are saying and give you the kind
of support that works best for you during the pandemic,” said Tara Fredericks, MHAW’s Director of Special Projects who is also overseeing Project Hope for MHAW. “They can offer coping strategies, supportive resources, or simply a chance to talk.” “As the leading mental health agency in Suffolk County, we’re proud that MHAW is well-positioned to play a leadership role in this timely initiative,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “People don’t need to grapple with these stresses on their own.
