The End. {Part II} Approximately 5 hours later… Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make

their way from one side to another. Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot. From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view. Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course). Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan paradise to be sure. As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road. After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table. On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

The award honors academic achievement and seeks to inspire students to pursue careers in engineering, science and technology. Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing wellrounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue

since 2007. In their report “Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day. The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness. However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for

demographic factors and baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood. Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities. It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.

Tips for College Applicants Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the

more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

On Tuesday, June 6th, the Bay Shore High School International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program held its annual IB Diploma Student Recognition Night to honor the 25 high school seniors who have completed the necessary requirements to qualify for the IB diploma. SAYING GOODBYE WITH MUSIC - “Music is Everywhere” was the theme of Brook Avenue School’s second grade scholars’ end of year show led by music teacher, Mr. Dan Narvaez. Students took the audience on a trip around the world from the USA to France, Mexico and Russia. These talented students sang and danced to music from all nations. What a great show! As each student came forward, their Extended Essay research paper title was announced and they received a certificate of achievement and an IB key chain. This past season, the Bay Shore Lady Marauders and the Riverhead Blue Waves played to STRIKEOUT Cancer. These two softball teams battled on the field, while others are battling for their life or have lost their battle off the field. They came together to bring awareness that cancer needs to end now. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga is partnering again this year with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) to collect NEW school supplies to fill back packs for children in need. LICH will distribute backpacks and school supplies for up to 4,000 children in need on Long Island. On August 29th, they will begin giving out supplies at an annual event “Back Pack Pirates Festival.” Every child deserves to start their school year with the tools they need to be successful. Individuals looking to help with this very worthy cause can

bring their items to the West Islip Public Library located at 3 Higbie Lane and place them in the collection box in the library’s lobby. Pink Aid Grant The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Pink AidLI Chapter. This grant helps fund the salary of a bilingual social worker who provides counseling, patient navigation and support services at Nassau University Medical Center and the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to uninsured and underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The grant also allows the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to support non-medical emergent needs for uninsured or underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients

and their families while undergoing treatment and/or post-operative care for breast cancer. These services include transportation to and from treatment, wigs and other prosthesis, grocery cards and assistance with household bills. “Pink Aid is proud to support the important assistance offered by Adelphi’s Breast Cancer Program and the bilingual social work and navigation services they provide. We are so pleased that our funding will allow critical support to reach even more women on Long Island,” says Ali Mitchell, the president of Pink Aid Long Island. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer

Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information for breast cancer patients, professionals and the community. The hotline can be reached at 800.877.8077. Pink Aid’s mission is to help underserved local women survive breast cancer treatment with support and dignity, to provide screening to women in financial need, and to empower breast cancer survivors to heal by helping and inspiring others.
