East Islip High School’s National Honor Society invested 55 members in a June 11 ceremony held in the middle school auditorium. Speakers included Co-Presidents Jolie Lenox and Kendall Mittleman. Each member was required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service and collect the equivalent of $20 in donations, and each had to lead their own project in which the rest of the society participates in. As a group, the EI NHS accomplished many things this year. They assisted the Science Honor Society’s blood drive, created a Safe Halloween event with the PTA and Key Club, supported the annual food drive, collected pillowcases and created dresses for young girls in Africa, participated in Christmas Magic, supported the high school SADD club’s fashion show, and ran numerous
of hypnosis. “These students worked tirelessly all year long, serving their community in many different ways,” said adviser Nicole Ingram. “The beauty of our investiture ceremony is that it recognizes the help that our members have had along the way. Each member chooses a mentor who has affected their
lives along their journey. They write a letter to their mentor expressing their gratitude and why they were chosen. This is read out loud for the audience to hear, and there are many times when there is not a dry eye left in the house. It is truly a unique and special tradition that I am very proud to facilitate.”

Walis built a beautiful owl box, using walnut and white pine for the body section. He then reversed the woods for the belly and face mask sections when cutting them out. Walis used a technique called plug cutting to reproduce the eye sections, working with the exotic hardwoods yellowheart and black ebony. The pull for the belly drawer and the wings were constructed out of

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.” Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can
construct a wooden ramp usually within a day or two of the start of the project. Are you freezing in the winter because of cold drafts from the windows? They’ll weatherize your windows and doors to keep you warm. If you have trip hazards like missing floor tiles or a high saddle between doorways, that’s an easy fix for the RTLI volunteers. These are just a few of things that RTLI does every day for eligible homeowners across our beautiful island! If you are in need and want to know if you quality for assistance, please call them at 631.777.7894. You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. If you’re an employer you can call them and see how you can sponsor a project and have your staff participate in a day of service. PSEG Employee Helps Beautify ACLD Gardens
The grounds around ACLD’s (Adults & Children with Learning & Developmental Disabilities) Bethpage complex are cleaner, greener and sprouting with new growth since a group of gardening volunteers from PSEG Long Island paid a recent visit. The group of volunteers included Tyler Pearsall of East Islip. “Helping to clean up ACLD was a very rewarding experience,” said Pearsall. “I found it interesting how much joy planting a garden and cleaning up the facility means to all who work and live here.” “For the past three years, volunteers from PSEG Long Island have given their time to beautify the ACLD
campus,” said Robert Ciatto, ACLD chief operating officer. “This year they planted both a sensory garden and vegetable beds, weeded, raked and spread a lot of mulch. ACLD is grateful to PSEG Long Island for their ongoing commitment and passion for ACLD; they have embraced our mission.” PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. ACLD is one of those organizations. Last year, PSEG Long Island employees logged 26,000 service hours volunteering

In a heartwarming annual event, graduating Islip High School seniors returned on June 24 to Wing Elementary, walking down the halls of the school
where they started their Islip educational careers. Seniors were cheered by the younger students as they high-fived them during the walk through,
and teachers were filled with joy to see students who they had taught many years ago and note how much they have grown.

Clear skies and a beaming sun welcomed a joyous crowd of family, friends and distinguished guests to East Islip High School’s 92nd commencement ceremony on June 26, to celebrate the Class of 2019 and the momentous milestone they have achieved. The event began with the seniors filing onto the football field, adorned in red caps and gowns, before Isabella Pasha and Maggie Ruland recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Victoria Tiernan performed the national anthem. In traditional fashion, four students – Alexandra Bertolini, Emily DaSilva, Karina Gallagher and Katelyn Spina – then sang the school’s alma mater. Principal Mark Bernard greeted the Class of 2019 before offering a heartfelt challenge. “I challenge you to be the best that you can be, to dream big, to work hard and to never accept failure,” Bernard said. “I challenge you to find a cure for cancer, to
work toward world peace and to leave this Earth better than it was when you came to be.” James Smalley, the salutatorian, then reflected on his journey as a student at East Islip High School and how the experiences they shared as classmates shaped them into kind, compassionate individuals. Bernard then honored a group of alumni from the Class of 1969 who were in attendance, and Kristen Bayreuther recognized the top 25 students in the senior class. Valedictorian Victoria Keenan’s words empowered her fellow graduates as they move on from this chapter in their lives. “Promise me that you will believe in yourself, even when others do not,” she said. “People are beautiful and wonderful, but they also have the power to be cruel. They can say things and do things that will make you feel powerless, that you are not good enough; but let me tell you this – you are enough. If there is one thing you will take
away from high school, let it be that.” Superintendent John Dolan wished the graduates well as he addressed them with powerful words of encouragement. “Now it is your time to go out into the world, to continue to make good, healthy choices and continue to help the ongoing evolution of our beautiful world,” he said. “Choose a career path where you are excited to go to work every day, where you are excited to work hard, to make those around you and the world a better place.” Following the presentation of diplomas, Class President Madison Lane delivered a nostalgic farewell address that took the new graduates on a final look back through their time as East Islip students. Just as the sun began to fade from view, the graduates exited the field with hopeful enthusiasm as they began the next chapter of their lives as alumni of East Islip High School.

Dr. Nakul Singhal Joins NYCBS
DR. NAKUL SINGHAL said Dr. Singhal. Dr. Singhal earned his medical degree from the University Of Toledo College Of Medicine in 2007. Continuing his education, Dr. Singhal completed his residency at North Shore LIJ-Lenox Hill Hospital followed by one year of internal medicine at Mount Sinai. As Chief Fellow at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2015, Dr. Singhal developed a learning curriculum for fellows and led many teaching conferences. Prior to joining NYCBS,
Dr. Singhal practiced at Hackensack Meridian Health and Atlantic Hematology Oncology Associates, LLC in New Jersey. Kinney elementary schools took the next step in their educational careers in preparing for middle school, celebrating at two memorable moving up ceremonies, held at the high school’s auditorium on June 19 for RCK and June 20 for JFK. Hundreds of parents and family members were on hand to cheer as the students received congratulations as well as numerous academic and other awards. “The moving up
event represents the end of the children’s elementary education and the beginning of their secondary education,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith. “It was a joyous day of celebration and accomplishment of the final year at JFK.
