Class of 2013 graduate Eilish Marquart is headed to the University of Maine this fall, which recently granted her a UMaine Recognition Award honoring her with a Certificate of Scholarship in Honor of Outstanding Academic Performance. Founded in 1865 on Marsh Island in Orono, Maine, the university serves as the flagship school of the University of Maine System and is often listed as one of the nation’s top colleges.

Marquart was one of 26 East Islip High School students to complete their senior year in the school’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy, and one of the first students to register for the program when it began in September 2012. “Eilish did an excellent job in the program and was actively involved in the symposium meetings, educational workshops and medical field trips throughout the school year,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the school’s

Making The Connection By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Fate is a funny thing. You either believe in it or you don’t, and you either allow it to dictate your path in life or you spend the majority of your time fighting against it. The choice is yours… or is it? People seem to have a habit of saying that things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately apparent at the moment, if ever. Timing, circumstance…

whatever the case may be, events have a way of working themselves out in such a way as to follow the trail of cause and effect, of coincidence and irony. And there we are in the middle, left trying to sort it all out. Sure, there are situations you may read more into, in your vain search for some kind of mystical, magical, cosmic connection, but others… well others you just simply can’t deny. They just are, blatantly and undeniably, obvious

for all but the most cynical among us to see – and to appreciate. If only we could see these instances for what they are, while they are occurring. Perhaps we could save ourselves a certain degree of unnecessary stress and aggravation, anguish and upheaval. If only… unfortunately, though, it often takes hindsight to gain that type of perspective. Life as we know it is, quite simply, just never that crystal clear.

gotten a tick? Yesterday, as I was unlocking my bike to ride to work, I noticed a tick crawling on the fence post it was chained to. Sure enough, as I looked at the seat of my bike, a ‘questing’ tick was waiting for a meal. These ticks wait on an overhanging leaf or vine until something brushes up against them. Then they latch on and take advantage of their new host. How can you avoid getting ticks? It isn’t easy to tell what shade of clothing is least conducive to fostering ticks. Studies show that wearing dark clothing results in slightly fewer ticks actually on you, but lighter clothing enables

you to see the ticks and ultimately refrain from getting bitten. Check yourself for lingering ticks when you leave their environment and, if at all possible, avoid trekking through their home in the first place. If you do find yourself bitten, it is best to find immediate medical help. It is easier to treat the diseases contracted from ticks right away. It is also very hard to diagnose these ailments at home. This summer, while you are out and about, remember that ticks are an ever-present danger and you cannot be too careful. Always use bugspray, and remember to check yourself for ticks constantly.

A few days ago, I found a tick on my arm. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, a tick! These small bloodsucking creatures are the stuff of nightmares for many of Fire Island’s inhabitants. The deer tick, the carrier of Lyme Disease, is arguably the most unsettling. This minuscule monster is known for staying hidden. Many people do not even realize they have been bitten. The deer tick is the smallest of all of the species that crawl around Fire Island. In addition to the notorious red ring of Lyme Disease, ticks can also transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. United States Soldier Kevin Brady traveled from Fort Bragg Army Base to SaveA-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. on July 4th for an emotional reunion with Bailey, a stray dog that became his battle buddy while stationed in Afghanistan. Guardians of Rescue raised over $5,000 to arrange for Bailey’s safe return through its “Paws of War — No Buddy Left Behind” program. Nowzad Dogs in Kabul was able to locate Bailey, in cooperation with Guardians of Rescue, where she was cared for before being shipped to Dubai Kennels. Bailey was quarantined, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and groomed, so that she could be reunited with her hero and best friend, who had cared for her since she was a puppy. Brady and the elevenmonth-old dog had been separated for two months before seeing each other again at Save-A-Pet. She is currently on her way to her new forever home in Northern California, where Brady and his family reside.

Stony Brook University Professor Ellen Pikitch, a renowned expert in marine biology and conservation; Christopher Scott and Elyssa Hopkins, currently students in the Marine Conservation and Policy program in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook, were among the volunteer oyster gardeners gathered at the Tiana Beach Community Oyster Garden, where each received 1000 baby oysters (spat), which they will nurture to maturity. A number of the oyster

gardener volunteers were recruited by the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program (ShiRP), which was founded by the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and its Institute for Ocean Conservation Science. “Restoring Shinnecock Bay requires dedication and a hands-on approach by scientists and residents in our communities,” said Dr. Pikitch, Executive Director of IOCS, ShiRP co-principal investigator (with SoMAS Prof. Christopher Gobler) and a Town of Southampton resident. “Raising these oysters is an extremely important initiative to improve the bay’s health, and I look forward to working alongside other members of the community on this project. I think it will be a great learning experience and fun.” At the end of the season the oyster gardener volunteers will produce their fully matured oysters to be planted by SBU students in special oyster

The Stony Brook University Alumni Association will donate $125,000 to establish the ‘Seawolves for Life Alumni Scholarship Fund’ to benefit scholarship support for undergraduate students at the University. The gift was matched in full by the Simons Foundation Challenge, creating a $250,000 philanthropic impact. The scholarship was created for the highest performing students who show the greatest financial need. Sherry Sussman, MD ’91, ’95, Immediate Past President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, who received her undergraduate degree from Stony Brook and is a graduate of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, is excited for the scholarship’s impact. “One of the goals of the Alumni Association is to enhance the lives of our current students. Teachers Jodie Macher, Kristen Nolan and Jennifer Talbot presented their respective classes, and the graduates marched out of the auditorium, ready for a refreshing summer before their new academic careers at the middle school begin.

FTK participants enjoyed breakfast and a day of golfing at Island Hills, followed by dinner and accompanied by raffles, auctions and recognition ceremonies. East Islip senior and Showtime DJs entrepreneur Jake Guadagno, who graduated later that week, donated his spinning skills to entertain the attendees, while other students volunteered to help make the event run smoothly. Goldfader added, “My sincere thanks go to Margaret Burnham

and Joan Sexton, the chairpersons of the Golf Outing, for their time, energy, patience and expertise in making sure this event was a huge success.” The next event on the organization’s calendar is the annual FTK Carnival held at Timber Point Elementary School, which will run this year from Sept. 20-22. Looking forward to the popular autumn fair, Goldfader said, “We hope to see all of you there in September!”

The 71 graduating fifthgrade students at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School enjoyed a thrilling moving up ceremony on June 19th, held in the auditorium at East Islip Middle School, where they attend as sixthgraders this September. After a traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” processional came the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Grace Hurlbert, Mark McLoyd and Erin Wiedmann. RCK Principal Danielle Naccarato then offered a welcome address to the family and friends in attendance, followed by the singing of the school’s song, Victoria Bouton’s “Learning Is the Way… Here at RCK.” Class memories were presented by Miranda Barreto, Shannon Dodenhoff and Jillian Heins. Adopting A Whale

On June 27th, the Central Islip Lions gathered to install their new slate of officers for the 2013-2014 year. In addition, they were also proud to recognize their Central Islip High School Scholarship Recipients’ for the 2013 Year. The Central Islip Lions Club started their Pasta Night/Chinese Auction in 2002 with Barbara Goldstein as Chairperson. The event grew and became an annual event. The place mat ads for this function were comprised of ads from local merchants and club members. Leos from Central Islip High

School helped serve pasta dinners to hundreds of people. The event also includes a Chinese Auction with hundreds of baskets and items up for bid. The Central Islip Lions will hold their next Pasta Night/Chinese Auction on November 8th, 2013 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Carleton Avenue. The money raised at this fundraiser is earmarked for the annual scholarship that goes to a graduate of the Central Islip High school program. The scholarship is named after lion Ed Murphy, long time member of the club, who passed away in June 2012.

This active Lions Club also sponsored a guide dog from the Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation. The guide dog’s name is Noel in memory of a deceased member of their club. Since 1969 this active Lions Club has held a dance in June for the blind and visually impaired. They have a DJ who runs a name that tune contest and different dance contests. Students in special education teacher Stephanie Clahane’s community service class at East Islip High School recently learned about their environment, pollution and how humans can affect the environment. Culminating the topic, the students chose, by a class vote, to complete a recycling project. Over the course of

several months, the students collected plastic bottles and recycled them. In May they then donated the received recycling money to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research & Preservation Adopt-a-Whale program and “adopted” a fin whale named Scooter. The Riverhead Foundation’s whale adoption program supports

the organization’s work in saving wild marine mammals and sea turtles and rehabilitating them in its hospital. “This project provided a service to the school community and helped the students work toward becoming active contributing citizens of their communities,” said Clahane.

On January 21st, Al Trost, a long time resident of Our Lady of Consolation celebrated his 90th birthday. Al was joined in this celebration by family, staff and

friends he made over the years. Al keeps very busy and active by playing cards, doing trivia and enjoying the great food prepared for him, as well as participating in the

Annual Golden Games, in which he has won many medals. Al grew up in Flushing and enlisted in the Army from October 1942 through December 1945.

90 Years Young He later worked in the plumbing business, drove a cab and was employed by Commander Oil. When he married his wife Marie, in 1947, they relocated to Copiague where they were

blessed with five children. Al’s family has now grown into 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
