Keep Islip Clean (KIC), a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the beautification of Islip Town, recently took part in the 25th Annual Great American Cleanup, collecting and removing over 22 tons of litter and debris and planting over 6,000 flowers in public spaces throughout the community. KIC volunteers cleaned beaches, parks, community centers, and general public spaces throughout the community making the Town a cleaner, more beautiful place to visit and live. In honor of Earth

Day, the Great American Cleanup takes place between March and May and is an event that each Keep America Beautiful affiliate participates in. The Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest organized community improvement program. Over 2 million people improve 15,000 communities across the nation each year. Over 2,500 KIC volunteers roll up their sleeves to improve the quality of life in our community each year, cleaning up litter-strewn areas and beautifying their Town. “We’re extremely thankful to have so many

active and dedicated volunteers eager to make our community a cleaner, safer and all around more beautiful place. Summa Cum Laude Stephen Bates, of Islip, graduated summa cum laude from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) in Patchogue during a ceremony held on May 27th at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Stephen was awarded a B.A. in Mathematics with a provisional certificate in grades 7-12. While at SJC, he was a member of the Sigma Iota Chi, Delta Epsilon Sigma, Kappa Gamma Pi and Kappa Mu Epsilon honor societies and a founding member of the Adolescent Education Club which offers free tutoring services to local school-aged children. Stephen also received the Leader on the Horizon Award from the Office of Student Activities and CoCurricular Programs at SJC. Currently, Stephen is a substitute teacher, but wants to become a college professor.

The Days You Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

Food Program Expands Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals

to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This year, more than 75,000 meals are expected to be served to approximately 3,500 children participating in the program. “Summertime should be a carefree, fun and relaxing time for all children,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, for many children who rely on

school lunch programs, the summer can cause worry, stress and empty stomachs.” According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hungerrelief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 reported participating in the National School Lunch Program, but only 14 percent reported having

a child participate in a summer feeding program that provides free food when school is out. “This underscores the critical importance of summer feeding programs, while emphasizing the need for increased awareness of these vital programs,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. Island Harvest’s SFSP is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S.

Department of Agriculture through the New York State Department of Education. At the local level, the program is managed by USDA-approved sponsors like Island Harvest. Under the SFSP, lunch meals will be provided to all children 18 years and under without charge at designated sites. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all

activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Family Comes First From an early age, I have been raised with a certain code of morals. I have always been guided toward “being the bigger man” and making smart choices. I’ve always been expected to look out for my little brother, act as a second man of the house, and protect those who need protection. This code of conduct has been instilled in me through the diligent work of my parents. Although they have always made sure I was capable of handling myself, they are not helicopter parents. They kept their distance, preferring to test my competence rather than nurture a dependent child. I like to think that this style worked out. I attribute my personal character to their efforts. I was their first child.

They call me their “experiment,” but it seems like they knew what they were doing. After all, I’m still alive! Although it would be great if each baby came with an owner’s manual, that is not the case. There is no personalized guide to raising a life. That is why I have the utmost respect for my parents. As my mom grew up in the Ukraine, she was not afforded the generous opportunities that I am. Her upbringing has taught me to seize every chance. When the opportunity arose for me to write in a newspaper, she pushed me to take it. All of this has built my character and molded me into the person I need to be. In order to conquer the world as I move through my life, I try to apply the

life lessons handed down from my parents. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by my mom and dad. My dad is, and always has been, concerned with hard work. He grew up knowing the value of effort. He prodded me into getting a job when I was just thirteen. It was my idea, rooted in his morals. I have always tried to make my parents proud. However, they are truly responsible for making me the man I am today. I will always treasure my parents. They are the people who shaped me. They are solely responsible for nurturing me. I will always cherish the unconditional love and support that can only come from one source...Family.

Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Continuing an annual tradition, the fifth-grade classes at Connetquot Elementary School in East Islip recently made a “pilgrimage” to the Statue of Liberty National Monument, the culmination of their study of U.S. history, immigration and the Industrial Revolution. During the weeks leading up to the trip, the students read a variety of materials delving into immigration history and the New York City landmark, and viewed documentaries and

primary sources including passenger manifests, photos and letters from immigrants. After taking buses to Manhattan’s Battery Park, where they viewed the financial district and other sites, the students joined tourists from all over the world in embarking on a ferry ride over to Liberty Island. There they viewed the museum collections and walked up to the pedestal of the colossal copper statue, which was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and

dedicated in 1886 as a gift from the people of France. Then it was on to Ellis Island and its immigration museum, rich in American history. “It was wonderful for the students to walk where the people who formed this country walked to get a feel for what they experienced, and to take in the amazing view of the harbor and downtown Manhattan,” said teacher Robert Chiarelli. During the final week of school, Bay Shore Gardiner Manor School students were invited to select a book from our Summer Reading Giveaway. Every class visited Room 16, which was organized by our volunteer Mrs. Iris Ryan, to choose books they would like to read over the summer. Each child left the room

with a gift from Gardiner Manor, an interesting book that will keep them reading for fun! This opportunity was made available to our children because of the hard, behind-the-scenes work of Ms. Terri Muuss, who graciously gave her time to the collection and delivery of donated books throughout the

school year, books that would otherwise have been discarded by a large publishing company. These books were new, of high interest and of all reading levels. Superintendent’s Art Gallery On June 9th, Superintendent Dr. Karen Salmon launched the 1st annual Superintendent’s Art Gallery. Bay Shore Art teachers were given the challenge of selecting just one piece of artwork from all their students, to be displayed in the Superintendent’s Office. Dr. Salmon welcomed parents, grandparents, students, Art teachers, Principals and Board member Mr. Guy Leggio to this inaugural event. Director of Cultural Arts Terry Nigrelli presented each gallery winner with a gift bag containing art supplies. Dr. Salmon then led everyone into her office to tour the gallery. The

successful evening closed with all being treated to delicious cake and cookies. In June of 2015, the artwork will be given a new home on the first floor of the Jerry G. Berka Administration Building. Over time, the walls of the Administration Building will be filled with beautiful artwork showcasing the vast artistic talents of our students. With the strong sunlight appropriately reflecting the bright hopes and dreams of the Class of 2014, East Islip High School held its 87th commencement on June 26th. As family and friends cheered wildly, the seniors marched in to Boomer Esiason Stadium to the traditional sound of Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed by the school’s orchestra and directed by Susan Rydzeski and Alyssa Sciarrino. Emily DeMaio sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by a rousing rendition of East Islip’s alma mater by the vocal quartet of Janine Alto, Paige Epstein, Nicholas Rocco and Maxx Vogelsberg. Principal William Brennen made the audience smile with his humorous but apt listing of the appropriate lessons in comparing life beyond high school to the song “Copacabana.” “Life will not always be easy, but with hard work and determination, you can achieve your goals,” he told the students he had watched over for the last four years. “It is our hope that you always choose paths of integrity.” On this day of honoring the future and remembering the past, outgoing Assistant Superintendent for Business Carl Fraser was given an honorary diploma, and Brennen welcomed 16 members of East Islip’s Class of 1964, who were congratulated and presented with special

certificates. Salutatorian Grant Stroehlein spoke to his fellow seniors about the necessity of failure in providing opportunities to grow and become a better person, noting, “The only true failure is one of effort. Always keep trying, as only you can decide when you’ve reached

your goals.” He described his personal disappointment in not being accepted to his dream college, but explained how the setback enabled him to reassess and reset his life. “The silver lining was personal growth,” he said. Valedictorian William Meehan decried the lack of sleep common to studious seniors, and shared his personal motto, instilled in him by his mother, “Don’t be an ingrate – be great.” In closing, he assured his classmates,

“We aren’t leaving our time here behind, we’re taking it with us.” “Let it be known that this year’s graduating class has written a wonderful chapter in the rich history of East Islip High School and our community,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi. She urged the graduates to work hard at developing likeable, pleasing personalities. “In doing so, you’ll find yourself naturally acting morally and ethically without realizing it,” she said. “Be likeable if you really care about your reputation.” Board President Louis F. Raffone’s speech was short and sweet, urging the students to applaud their parents for their crucial role in getting the students to where they are today. Following the presentation of diplomas, Class of 2014 President Amanda Garcia gave a farewell address, thanking everyone in her class. “This is the future right here, and we have exceeded all expectations,” she said. “Let us throw our caps!” Red headgear flew skyward, and as the orchestra played the recessional march from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, the new alumni filed proudly out of the stadium to begin their celebrations.
