St. Joseph’s College (SJC) recently broke ground for a new $17 million Student Center to be constructed at SJC Long Island located in Patchogue, New York. Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, President of St. Joseph’s College was joined by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri, State Assemblymen Doug Smith and Jarret Gandolfo, County Legislator Rob Calarco and members of the SJC Board of Trustees for the special occasion. The Student Center, which is being built to serve the institution’s growing student population, will be financed by the College’s bond issue and is the first new building to be constructed on the campus in 18 years. “This project is something that unites us,” said Dr. Donald R. East Islip High School’s boys varsity track team recently finished in fifth place in their division championship. Josh Terhune led the way by winning the 800-meter race with a time of 2:00.03, one of the fastest times in the county, and placing fourth in the high jump. EI’s 4 x 100 relay team of Joe Margo, Vinny Mariani,

Peterson Lowman and Kevin Smith also took first place. Second-place finishers included Jason Conzo in pole vault, Smith in the 100-meter race and Javier Ornella in shot put. The 4 x 400 relay team of Conzo, Nick Groneman, James Kelly and Josh Terhune finished in third place, running an impressive

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Adventureland opened in 1962 and has been serving Long Island for over 59 years. The park offers both season and day passes that can be purchased online or at the park. Islip BOE Honors Retiring Superintendent Dr. Ellen Semel The Islip Board of Education honored admired and dedicated 2021 retirees, including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ellen Semel, during its June 15 meeting in the high school auditorium. Also recognized at the board meeting that evening were 2020-2021 SCOPE Award for Excellence for Support Staff Service winners Donna Bushelon and Michelle Hickey as well as the high school’s varsity teams that earned ScholarAthlete recognition. Dr. Semel, Islip’s superintendent since 2018 and previously the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and K-5 director of instruction, received many heartfelt tributes from Board President Philip Dineen as well as district administrators. High school senior and accomplished vocalist Leah Cyran, accompanied by Dr. Rich Harris on keyboards,

serenaded Dr. Semel with a touching rendition of “Rainbow Connection” from “The Muppet Movie.” “Dr. Semel has dedicated at 33-year career in education – the last 15 here in Islip – to being a champion for public schools, students and staff,” said Dineen. “Beginning her career as a classroom teacher, Dr. Semel developed a passion for educating and inspiring young minds. Although her titles have changed throughout her tenure, what remained permanent was Dr. Semel’s focus on ensuring all students were provided a robust education that met their diverse learning needs and personal interests. Embracing the notion that one’s learning should never stop, Dr. Semel completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the areas of the arts, including her doctorate. With this focus, we are confident

that she will continue to seek out personal learning opportunities as she enters the next phase of her life. We are thankful to have had Dr. Semel at the helm of our school district over the past few years and wish her all the best in the future.” “I want to thank you for your gratitude and your wonderful extension of love,” Semel said. “I thank you all for sharing not just your children, but your stories, your celebrations, your weddings, the births, the wonderful times and the sad times too, the mourning and the losses. We started our nonproﬁt Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. his battle on April 22, 2010, ironically the same day The Suffolk County Environmental Center, a public nature center located on the Scully Estate in Islip, took possession of the 70-acre facility through a long-term custodial agreement with the Suffolk County Department of

Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The family took this as a sign that their memorial should be located here as a quiet meditation, reflection and remembrance for those lost to addiction and the families left behind. In addition to the meditation garden, five Pine Trees

were planted and dedicated to a different aspect of how people battle the addiction crisis. Gabriel’s Giving Tree was formed by these survivors and their mission is to provide financial and emotional support to families who have lost a loved one to addiction.
