The Islip Arts Council introduced the tradition of the Teeny Awards 14 years ago as a way to publicly recognize the very talented theater students in high schools across the Town of Islip. The Teeny Awards are modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, recognizing students in the categories of Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, Featured Actor/Actress and Best Ensemble, for both musicals and nonmusical plays. Special Recognition Awards are also given to students involved in crew, pit orchestra and poster artwork, and every director is given the opportunity to recognize a special student from each production for the “Director’s Choice” Award. A panel of judges attends each local high school production and evaluates the actors’ performances based on a rubric, and a Teeny Awards gala complete with red carpet and TV crew is held in early June. For the past 13 years, East Islip High School has submitted its musical productions for Teeny judging, and their Drama Club productions for the past four years, thanks to the new initiative of the school’s Drama Club to perform full-scale nonmusical productions each fall. In the past, the Drama Club performed smaller-scale, one-act

Islip Arts Takes Home 2022 Video Arts Awards From Press Club Of Long Island The Press Club of Long Island held its 2022 Media Awards event on June 2nd at the Melville Marriott Long Island. The Islip Arts Council won two awards in the Arts category for: • Islip Arts Council Gives Brentwood Theatre Students A Special Moment in the Spotlight • The Best of The Islip Art Museum’s 2-TOGETHER ART EXHIBITION 2021. The first winning story was part of the 2021 TEENYS virtual celebration of the performing arts by high

school theater students in the Town of Islip. Due to COVID limitations, Brentwood High School students did not put on any shows. In order to give seniors one moment in the spotlight, the Islip Arts Council arranged for the students to perform one number just for our cameras. The Performance of a number from ONCE UPON THIS ISLAND was brief but its emotional impact on the cast and faculty will last forever. The second story 2-TOGETHER, a virtual art exhibition for the Islip

Art Museum in partnership with AARP New York which was co-curated by Holly Gordon and Waldo Cabrera. Established artists were asked to partner with young artists and create a work of art. Twenty two couples were interviewed on video about their creative journey. The video that was submitted featured the best interviews of that collection. The thought-provoking inspirational virtual exhibition 2-Together is live on the Islip Arts Youtube Channel (6k views already!)

Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Bobby Hazen, District Manager of Saf-T-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more

distractions.” As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children learn lifesaving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water. P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision.

L = Life Jackets. Life jackets should be worn when on a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. A = Adult Always Watching. Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a bath. Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised—not even for a minute. S = Shut All Gates. Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices. H = How to Rescue. Teach all caregivers infant, child/ adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques. Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.

Great River Boy Scout Earns His Eagle Scout Badge, Making Him A Third Generation Eagle Scout In The Family Maxwell Curtin Lessing, Great River, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on January 12, 2022, officially making him the 102nd Eagle Scout in the history of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace, NY. Maxwell’s Eagle Court of Honor was held on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at The Mansion at Timber Point, 398 Great River Rd, Great River, NY 11739. Maxwell Lessing is a third generation Eagle Scout, following in the Scouting footprints of his Grandfather and Distinguished Eagle Scout Gerald Curtin, Great River, NY, as well as Maxwell’s Uncle, Tim Curtin, Great River, NY – where he is Troop 205 Eagle Scout #6 – earning his Eagle Badge in 1999. Maxwell is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Maxwell has served Troop 205 as a Patrol Leader, Troop Scribe, and Troop Guide – where he assists his younger Scouts in

their Rank Advancements. Maxwell has had many unique Scouting experiences and has a total of 34 camping nights with the Troop. Some of his favorite camping experiences include last summer’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for a week, 2019 Summer Camper at Camp Wakpominee at Ft. Ann, NY, and the Montauk Troop Fishing Trips. He also plans to attend the 2023 National Boy Scout Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit in West Virginia and has future aspirations of being on the crews at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM, and Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys. To become an Eagle Scout, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 13 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Maxwell currently has earned a total of 31 Merit Badges. The Service Project that Maxwell developed, planned,

and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends, and family members was planning, developing, and construction of Adirondack Chairs, tables, and a trellis for his Church – St. Mary’s R.C. Church, East Islip, NY. Maxwell has also earned the following awards and achievement in Scouts: Webelos Arrow of Light, Firem’n Chit, Tot’in Chit, and Cyber Chip and has been elected by his fellow Scouts to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – Scouting’s honorary camping society, where he is currently a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow. He has also earned the National Outdoor Award for Camping and the COVID-19 Community Response Award from the Suffolk County Council. Maxwell recently said this about his Scouting career: “Now that I am so close to accomplishing my goals of reaching Eagle Scout, I realize how much the journey to get here has taught me. I’ve learned how to pitch a tent, tie knots, and deal with hard situations.

In this journey, I have learned the building blocks for my future.” Maxwell went on to say, “Overall in my life, I have one main goal which is to help others and make an impact on the world. I want to make a positive change in the world that will help many people throughout the world. While I realize that my goals may change as I get older, I do hope that I will accomplish everything I set out to do in life. Scouting has prepared me to do this.” Maxwell is currently in the 8th Grade at St. Mary School, East Islip, New York, where he was recently named a Class Valedictorian and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and a member of the St. Mary School Student Council. He has earned the St. Mary School Perfect Attendance Award since the 5th Grade and the St. Mary Writing Award in 2021. He is a member of the St. Mary Cross Country Team, where

he placed eighth individually at the CMSA Championship and the team placed first, overall. Maxwell is also a St. Mary Flag Hoister, where he raises and lowers the flag daily. He was also on the St. Mary School Bowling and St. Mary Soccer Teams, and currently on the St. Mary Performing Arts Club. Maxwell has also earned the NYSSMA Outstanding Performance Award on Piano in 2021. Maxwell has been a member of the East Islip Soccer Club, the Long Island Fun Runners, the Eastern Athletic Club Junior Tennis Program, the Southward Ho Country Club Swim Team, and the World Gym Tennis Program. Performing service projects is common for Maxwell, where he has logged in 46.8 hours of community service hours through the Troop, not including his own Eagle Service Project. This includes volunteering for the East Islip Soccer Club “Just for Kicks Program,” serving as an Altar Server at the Church of St. Mary, East Islip, NY, and a volunteer for the road cleanup and

planting projects through the Great River Community Association, Great River, NY, and a member of the Church of St. Mary Youth Group. Maxwell is the son of Gerilyn and Peter Lessing and Brother to Prescott Lessing, Great River, NY. The Lessing Family have been an active Scouting Family in Troop 205, as his Mother Gerilyn serves on the Troop Committee, Father Peter, an Assistant scoutmaster and Head Chef of Troop 205, and Brother Prescott, a new Scout in Troop 205 this Spring, after being a Webelos Scout in Cub Scout Pack 205.
