ozens of volunteers from Islip Youth Enrichment Services, the Central Islip Fire Department and the community came together to celebrate Central Islip Community Park Day. The event marked the unveiling of new playground equipment, a ball field and the grand opening of the park located in Central Islip. Members of the Central Islip Fire Department led Fire Safety presentations, providing information to the community.

We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

For our seniors, it’s an opportunity to revisit the place it all began and to see how far they’ve come and how much they’ve grown as people. Chasing Their Destiny
As East Islip High School’s Class of 2016 stepped onto the football field on June 24th, taking their central role in the school’s 89th commencement, they also took a giant step in the game of life, ready to pursue new dreams and new destinies. After the initial
processional music from the high school orchestra, directed by Susan Rydzeski, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Caleb Shulman and Shannon Ransom, followed by Jon Sawyer Coffin singing “The StarSpangled Banner.” Rising above the wind, a quartet of Danielle Pafundi, Karli Pipitone, Ashley Karlin and
Noelia Vazquez delivered a rendition of the school’s alma mater. “Find what you are passionate about,” Principal William Brennen urged his former charges. “Follow your dreams now, before life gets in the way. There will be obstacles and ups and downs, and it will not always be easy, but a
dream worth living is one that you have to work for. Congratulations to the Class of 2016. I wish you all the best of luck.” Board of Education President Philip Montuori Sr., an alumnus of East Islip’s Class of 1966, recalled his own graduation 50 years ago, telling the seniors about his memories sitting in the student section where they now waited. Superintendent John V. Dolan, in his first commencement address since joining the district last year, assessed the graduates as intelligent, empathetic and caring. Reminding them of the value of pride and a work ethic, he told them, “The East Islip community –
your parents, schools, teachers, friends, grandparents – has worked together to build a solid foundation so you can go out into this world and make it a better place.” “Today marks the end of our time here in East Islip, and the culmination of more than a decade of work,” said salutatorian Joseph Teknus. “It’s also about the people we met, and the friends we have, and the memories we made.” “It has taken 12 long years to get to where we are right now – 12 years of homework and summer projects, but also 12 years of making new friends, discovering who we are and creating memories that will stay with us for a
lifetime,” said valedictorian Meaghan Coles, telling her fellow graduates to keep moving forward while acknowledging their accomplishments. “Sitting here on this field, we have all accomplished something. This moment is validation that in the past 12 years, we have all done at least one thing right. Our lives in these hallways are over, they are no longer ours to walk. New students will sit in our desks, and life will go on for East Islip High School without us. But life will go on for each of us as well. This national crayon recycling program is simple and brilliant. Students collect unwanted crayons, used, broken, unpopular colors. They then have a fun time sorting, counting and boxing them up and
shipping them to Crazy Crayons, where they are melted down and made into new crayons. These new crayons are sent to hospitals, orphanages and inner city schools. The students found this to be a great interactive learning experience and it was a perfect way for our youngest students to have a way to give back to others.
