Four students from the Islip Career Center Welding Program recently earned advanced industry certifications. These qualifications make these students extremely attractive to potential employers and unions as their skills are that much more marketable. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs. Each student attained a 3G welding certification and one of the four also achieved a 4G certification. The 3G and 4G certifications mean the bearer is certified in vertical and overhead welding, respectively, two difficult positions in which to weld because the metal is not directly in front of you. Pipe joints are going to be at eye level or higher,
even over your head, and often on thick metal (up to 10 inches). The welder must learn to weld against gravity and master a new set of skills and techniques to accomplish this. Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar ordered the material and administered the test to her interested students after practicing in class, and submitted the finished product to MT Group, the certifying organization based in Farmingdale. They then gave the welded material a strict qualifications test. “This is the first time anyone in all of Eastern Suffolk BOCES has earned this certification as a student,” said Terhaar. “This was a huge goal of mine. When I graduated, these certifications were my entry way into every job. My students can pass tests and here is the proof.” Next year Terhaar plans
to have even more students pass the 3G and 4G certifications and prepare students to take the Pipe Weld / 6G certification exam. This is the most difficult certification to obtain and is considered the gold standard in the industry. Additionally, two of these students were each awarded checks for $600 from the recently established Robert Vetter Memorial Fund to purchase equipment at AWISCO, a welding supply company. These items and materials will assist them during the launch of their new careers. Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar and School Nurse Alicia Anderson helped raised the money and AWISCO matched their contributions. The memorial fund honors the late Robert Vetter, Terhaar’s welding teacher and mentor.

DAY AT THE MUSEUM - Brook Avenue School scholars set off on an exploration of the Museum of Natural History and extended their learning about animals, dinosaurs and rocks and minerals. They held the tooth of T-rex and explored gems from around the world. The views were beautiful going and coming across the bridges into Manhattan. Students loved seeing the skyline. What better way to make curriculum come alive for our scholars, than a trip to the museum. A great day was had by all!

The Greater Long Island Running Club is pleased to announce that the 2017 Herb Grayson Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Emma Mangels of Bay Shore High School. This scholarship is awarded by GLIRC annually to a graduating Long Island senior who has demonstrated dedicated service to the Long Island running community. Mangels accepted her award, a $2,000 check, at the GLIRC General Meeting on June 20 at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library. A 2017 graduate of Bay Shore High School, Mangels was a committed
member of the school’s track team, and in her senior year was recognized as a Suffolk County Academic All-County runner. Mangels’ exemplary initiative made her stand out amongst the dozen of scholarship applicants. In her junior year, the student-athlete organized a 5-Kilometer Run to support the fight against Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare skin disease her cousin suffers from. In her scholarship application essay, Mangels reflected on the undertaking involved in creating a grassroots event – she dealt with everything from
the permit process and sponsorship solicitation to race publicity. Her efforts resulted in a successful run and a net proceeds of over $5,600, which was donated to the EB Research Partnership. Mangels plans to attend the University of Notre Dame this fall, and will use the Herb Grayson Memorial Scholarship to help defray her upcoming school-related expenses. Islip High School was nominated for 10 Teeny Awards for this year’s musical productions of “Into the Woods” and “The Wiz”, and the school was chosen to create a featured performance for this year’s Teeny Award ceremony, held on June 4th at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale. “The Wiz” cast was one of only four districts to be nominated for a Teeny for Best Ensemble in a Musical. The Teeny Awards is a student arts recognition program of the Islip Arts Council, intended to
celebrate the talented theater students of the Town of Islip. Matthew Kadam won the Teeny for Best Supporting Male in a Musical, and Faith Terrill won for Outstanding Female Cameo in a Musical; both were for “Into the Woods.” Other individual Islip students who were nominated for Teeny Awards for their performances were Kristen Baumgartner (Outstanding Female Cameo in a Musical in “The Wiz”), Maria Cacoperdo (Best Supporting Female
in a Musical in “Into the Woods”), John DelGenio (Best Lead Male in a Musical in “The Wiz”), Ashley Howell (Student Choreographer for “The Wiz”), Morgiana McDevitt (Best Supporting Female in a Musical in “Into the Woods”), Matthew McManus (Outstanding Male Cameo in a Musical in “Into the Woods”), Nicole Poliandro (Best Lead Female in a Musical in “The Wiz”) and Emma Regina (Best Lead Female in a Musical in “Into the Woods”).

FUN WITH STEM - Did you know that Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) encompasses many different types of activities? Families recently had the opportunity to explore different areas that fall under the STEM umbrella at South Country School’s STEM Night. Working together, families moved from station to station participating in activities such as creating towers from toothpicks and PlayDoh, operating robots and building bridges between desks using masking tape and pasta! All of the attendees had a great time and walked away with even more knowledge about STEM.

Field Day At East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School, students from kindergarten through second grade enjoyed a fun-filled Field Day full of activities, including an obstacle course, hula hooping, box car races, potato sack races, balance
activities and a ball toss game. “Field Day has always been a favorite year-end event for Timber Point,” said physical education teacher Pat Bush. “It is such a rewarding experience to watch the students participate in all

Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for
the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

As the sun wrestled through the clouds, the 342 members of East Islip High School’s Class of 2017 marched in a sea of red-and-white caps and gowns into Boomer Esiason Stadium on June 23rd to start the school’s 90th commencement ceremony. The graduates nevertheless experienced a rain of inspiring words about honesty, competition and perseverance from fellow students and administrators as they prepared to turn the page on a new chapter in their young lives. The high school band, directed by Christopher Neske, performed the processional music. Brittney Berke, accompanied by Vincenzo Mediate, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Kendra Canavan sang the “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The vocal quartet of Roy Anderson, Amanda Baranek, Berke and Kurt Eide delivered the school’s alma mater. Members of the school’s Class of 1967 were presented with certificates recognizing their golden anniversary of graduation. “Dreams are important because they are what motivates us,” said Principal William Brennen in his opening
remarks. Emphasizing the importance of character building based on honesty, he encouraged the graduates to develop and pursue goals and show appreciation for their parents, teachers and others who help them along their journey. Quoting from Adam Smith and Charles Darwin, valedictorian Jack Palmeri extolled competition as essential to productive activity in each person’s life and for whole nations, saying that it furthers innovations, sparks creativity and advances civilization. “It’s what influenced individuals such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to strive to be their best,” Palmeri said. “Without competition, society would have no drive, no determination and no choices. Competition is what separates the great United States of America from the rest of the world.” Salutatorian Alexandra Belyea reflected on how her accomplishments throughout her East Islip school career would have been unattainable without the guidance of her teachers, friends and parents, who always told her to be nice, kind and happy and befriend those that would make her a better person.
“In the end, people will only truly care about and remember the type of person you are,” Belyea said. “As we all move past high school, it is crucial to be a positive influence in society and surround yourself with genuinely good people who raise you up instead of pull you down.” Superintendent John Dola encouraged students to pick career paths that would energize them, set their goals high and chase them with unbridled enthusiasm. “Make good choices and take responsibility for them, and be sure to follow your moral compass,” he said. Board of Education President Christopher Zachry told the graduates that they would fail only if they didn’t believe in themselves through life’s inevitable obstacles and unexpected events. He stressed that time, unlike money, is a commodity that they can’t afford to lose because it can never be regained. “If there’s something in your heart that you want to do, don’t put it off,” he said. “Don’t waste time. Don’t wait until you’re 25 or 30. Start working towards it now.”

I searched through all my favorite songs and picked the ones that I felt had some wisdom to share with

As the 235 seniors in Islip High School’s Class of 2017 walked in to the athletic field on June 22nd, clad in purple and white, the first phase of their educational journey was about to conclude in a moving and memorable fashion. “It amazes me how fast these four years have gone, but then again, it is only natural that time passes quickly when attending such a great school like Islip,” said co-valedictorian Kenneth Ortega. “The amazing friends, teachers and faculty have made my years at Islip High School unforgettable.” He went on to urge his fellow graduates to seek out positive, supportive people. “Islip has taught me that we need people who are go push us to do our absolute best,” he said. “At times we will feel lost in the world, but if we surround ourselves with people who truly want to see us succeed, they will be able to help us reach our goals.” Board of Education trustee Mary Ann Coughlin, whose son Quinn Coughlin was among the graduates, told them, “Success itself is universal, the journey is what is different.” Nicole Poliandro, who had kicked off the commencement with “The
