Memorial Scholarship

The I AM CI Foundation presented the first annual Norman and Marie Wagner Memorial Scholarship to a pair of Central Islip High School Seniors who will be pursuing post secondary education to the universities of their choice. Grads Look Forward The Class of 2018 celebrated their graduation from Islip High School on June 21st, as well as their experiences in Islip that have helped them get to this pivotal point in their lives. After a processional, along with “Pomp and Circumstance,” which was performed by the Islip High School Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, Morgiana McDevitt performed an amazing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” After Principal Michael Mosca welcomed students, staff and visitors to the festivities, valedictorian Julia Horman spoke to her classmates. She congratulated them on the wonderful story they’ve written, but said that they

were all ready to move forward. “It’s time to turn the page, and move forward with our successes,” Horman said. “Thank you for this adventure, and I can’t wait to hear about the new ones all of you create!” After some inspirational words from Board of Education President Brian Clock and Principal Michael Mosca, salutatorian Madeline Marconi gave advice to her classmates while quoting “The Great Gatsby,” but also paid tribute to her teachers and family. “To be standing here on this stage today is only one of the many fruits of our efforts throughout these past four years,” Marconi said. “However, I believe

Paul Pontieri’s resignation from the board last year. Pagdanganan’s term is seven years. Pagdanganan is a member of the college foundation’s board of directors and currently manages government relations in Suffolk County for National Grid.

Pagdanganan earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of the Philippines and a master’s degree from Dowling College and has been a volunteer firefighter in the Brentwood Fire Department since 1997.

The Councilman, along with Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Commander of American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 Dominick DeCrescenzo, and members of the American Legion, gathered on the grounds of Commack Road Elementary along with students, in celebration of the 241st year our nation’s flag. Dressed in their best red, white and blue, students sang songs of national pride and learned the history of Old Glory, while winners of the school’s Flag Day essay contest were awarded.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

DID YOU KNOW? The Declaration Of Independence Wasn’t Signed On July 4, 1776.

On July 1, 1776 the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. On July 2, 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of Richard Henry Lee’s motion for independence. The delegates spent the next two days debating and revising the language of a statement drafted by Thomas Jefferson. On July 4, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, and as a result this date is celebrated as Independence Day. Only 2 people actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776: John Hancock and Charles Thomson, Secretary of Congress. Most others signed on August 2, and several signed on a later date.

Diploma Ceremony

The Bay Shore High program held its annual STRIKE! - Physical education classes at Bay Shore Middle School provide an School International IB Diploma Student opportunity for students to learn about a variety of different sports. Recently, students Baccalaureate (IB) diploma Recognition Night to honor in Mrs. Dobbs’ class completed a bowling lesson. the high school seniors who have completed the necessary requirements to qualify for the IB diploma. Superintendent Mr. Joseph Bond, Board of Education Trustee Louis Bettinelli, High School Principal Mr. Robert Pashkin and IB Coordinator Mr. Jonathan Nelson were on hand to congratulate students. He began his career in the Long Island Public School system before moving, in 2001, to the Friends Academy Middle School in Locust Valley, New York. In his tenure there, Stephen taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade Social Studies, coached various sports and served for 10 years as the Principal of the Middle School. During his final years at Friends, Stephen was an instrumental part of the process of campus planning and renovation. In 2015, Stephen assumed the headship of The Rosarian Academy, a 380-student independent Catholic day school in West Palm Beach Florida. His major accomplishments at The Rosarian Academy include numerous program initiatives in math, literacy and STEM education. Additionally, Stephen oversaw a complete rebranding initiative to improve dramatically the school’s independent school identity though marketing and web presence within the community. He also worked with his

administrative team to improve philanthropic giving significantly within the institution, most recently recording a record level of fundraising through annual giving and yearly signature events. Stephen grew up on Long Island and attended North Shore High School. He holds a B.A. in History and Secondary Education from St. John’s University and a Masters of Education from Dowling College, with a combined focus in Literacy and Special Education in grades K-12. In 2013, Stephen participated in the Aspiring Heads Institute through the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). He has spoken at various conferences through the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) on educational technology and has been a mentor teacher as part of the Institute for New Teachers, also a NYSAIS sponsored program. Last, and most important, Stephen is the proud husband of Kate and father of two boys, Thomas (8) and Daniel (7). They enjoy travel, outdoor activities, cub scouts, and spending quality time together on the weekends.

Carney honored 21 alumni from the Class of 1968 who were in attendance, and Kerri Kolensky recognized the top 25 students in the senior class. Salutatorian Kevin Varga kept his promise to keep his speech short, thanking his teachers and parents and leaving his fellow graduates with a quote from Clint Eastwood, “It doesn’t matter what you do in life, just be the best at it.” Jason Burke, the valedictorian, said, “Everyone has their

Patriotic students and community members joined together at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School for a high-flying Flag Day celebration on June 14th, beginning with a march and flag-raising with members of the local American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411, led by Commander Dominick DeCrescenzo. Flags lined the bus loop, each representing a member of the Commack Road extended family. “Just as these flags lining the loop symbolize our Commack Road veterans, the flag that we salute each day is symbolic of many things,” said Cameron. “I personally see our flag as representative of our history, but it also represents our future.” Second-graders led the

As sunny skies shone overhead, East Islip High School held its 91st commencement on June 21st, giving the Class of 2018 a chance to celebrate their achievements and get ready for a new phase of life. Seniors Alexa Benitez and Stone Locke led the audience in the pledge of allegiance, Gabriella Commisso sang the national anthem, and four gifted senior vocalists – Jake Acocella, Jenna Anderson, Sarah Bloom and Sara Rapuzzi – sang the school’s alma mater. “It is time for the Class of 2018 to set sail on the sea of life,” said Superintendent John Dolan. Speaking to the graduates, he told them, “Remember your family and the entire East Islip community will forever be your foundation, your lighthouse, your

The East Islip Special Olympics team took the field for the third consecutive year, competing on May 19 at the Long Island Spring Games North hosted by Bethpage High School. Despite heavy rain, the studentathletes maintained their focus and competitive spirit, resulting in the team bringing home a total of 24 medals. East Islip had a team of 13 this year, consisting of six middle schoolers (Riley Carrillo, Madeline Director, Jake Kozak, Janissa Lloyd, Julia Modico and Michael Pacheco-Uvidia) coached by physical education teacher Laura O’Donnell, and nine high school students (Delany Conlon, Danny DiOrio, Robert Phillips, Jake Pippatone, Michael Quagliara, Sara Spruyt and Kelly Stupplebeen), coached by physical education teacher Julie Susskind. The team trained for approximately two months

to prepare for their track and field events – 50-meter dash, 50-meter assisted walk, 100-meter dash, turbo javelin throw, softball throw and tennis ball throw – with each athlete competing in two events. With their hard work and dedication, alongside the commitment of the coaching staff and support of the volunteers, the year was another huge success for East Islip’s team, which earned 11 gold, 11 silver and two bronze medals. The team members and their families had gathered for a pregame breakfast the day before, hosted by the East Islip Athletics Department, and the district’s Special Education Parent Teacher Organization showed its support with the purchase of a new team banner. Volunteers included East Islip teachers and staff such as Paula Brinker, Renee De Vries, Josephine DiMaggio, Christine O’Connell, Marissa Rymer, Donna Tuck

and Diane Wahrenburg; family members of competing athletes like SEPTO President Noni Kozak, Thomas Di Orio and Anthony Matteran; community members like EI alumni Alfio DiMaggio, Frankie DiMaggio and Teresa DiMaggio; and even a middle school student, Antonia Tuck, who was the first student volunteer since the team was organized. Also on the field rooting for the athletes were East Islip Middle School Principal Mark Bernard and Superintendent John Dolan. “It just gets better every year,” said O’Donnell. “Even in the pouring rain, there’s nothing better than the high five at the finish line or the pride each athlete exudes while holding up their medal. We couldn’t be more honored to share this day with everyone on the team.”

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently met with Christopher P. McGuire, Esq., and Joseph Tantillo, President of Nassau Suffolk Electrical & Mechanical, at a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of McGuire, Peláez & Bennett, P.C. The law firm offers legal counsel with an expertise in criminal, traffic and matrimonial law, family court, personal injury, real

estate closings, as well as landlord-tenant disputes. The newly refurbished space provides muchneeded rehabilitation to the area. The project included renovating two buildings once left in disrepair, after a restaurant and laundromat vacated the premises. Major renovations were applied to the spaces, according to McGuire and Tantillo both Central Islip natives, who said that improving the

aesthetics of the Carleton Ave. streetscape was at the forefront of the renovation project. “The Town of Islip has much to offer new businesses. It is important that as we welcome new businesses to our area, they seek to enrich the communities they become part of. This partnership is what continues to make our Town a wonderful place to both live and work,” said Supervisor Carpenter.
