After being rained out on June 3rd, The Association for Facilities Engineering AFE Chapter 4 Long Island will host their Annual Charity Golf Outing on Thursday, July 11th at the Lido Golf Course in Lido Beach with an 8:30 a.m. “shotgun” start. The AFE Chapter 4 chose Lido to show that LI has come back after Super Storm Sandy, especially in the Long Beach area, where a charitable donation will be made, all while enjoying a great day of golf, food and fun, at one of Long Island’s top golf venues. The honoreee for this year’s outing is Mr. Joe Gathard, a noted business & community leader. Joe Gathard is vice president of All Service Electric, lnc. a leading electrical contracting firm on Long lsland serving businesses, schools and municipalities. A graduate Cadet Captain from La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, Joe was born in Valley Stream, NY where his grandparents were founders of the lnc. Village of Valley Stream in 1925. His love for community service and politics kept Joe busy as a Valley Stream volunteer fireman. His experiences with Rescue Company lead him to a post with Nassau

He was elected and served two terms as a Village Trustee in Valley Stream and worked for the House of Representatives under Congressman Ray McGrath. Joe’s dad founded the family electrical business after World War ll where just about the whole family spent some time working. Then Joe’s oldest brother and he took the company to the next level acquiring other electrical businesses. Today the family business still thrives with him and his partner Donna earning All Service Electric a reputation offering service second to none. While his son Justin attended NY Maritime College, Joe again became involved and served as President of the Parents Association and Ex-Officio of the Fort Schuyler Alumni Association and Foundation. During that time as a member of AFE Chapter 4, Joe helped establish the NY Maritime College Student Chapter which has led to internships and jobs for young talented cadets in the facilities industry. Joe continues to pay it forward as he is currently serving his third year as the president of the Long lsland Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, is a member of the Electrical lndustry Board of Nassau and Suffolk Counties and is an employer trustee for l.B.E.W. Local 25 Health and Benefit Fund. Joe lives in Middle lsland, NY with his wife MaryEllen, they have two grown children and three grandchildren. Joe truly illustrates the saying “if you need something done ask a busy person”. Talent Announced Fire Island Dance Festival, the most anticipated charity event of the season on Fire Island, returns July 19th to 21st, for its 19th edition. More than 40 dancers from worldclass dance companies will present a stunningly varied program spanning Broadway to ballet with the Great South Bay as their backdrop. The

Responders arrived at the scene unaware of what type of emergency they were facing, and had to quickly formulate a plan of action when they learned it was an active shooter situation. As the drill unfolded, 31 volunteer live “victims” and 20 mannequins were extricated from the school and moved to a mock “triage” area outside of the high school, where they had their simulated wounds treated and were then transported to local hospitals for treatment. The emergency preparedness drill also served as a “surge” drill for these hospitals to test their ability to handle multiple victims. “The active shooter drill scenario was designed to push first responders

beyond what they are accustomed to for a normal response,” explained Exchange Ambulance Vice President Robert Stadelman. “An unsecure scene, large number of patients and limited resources combined to create a unique scenario that many first responders, even those with many years of service, had never experienced before. The drill also demonstrated the ability of multiple agencies – school district, EMS, fire and police, each with its own set of priorities – to all work together to save lives. The drill was a great success and many lessons were learned by all involved that should improve the response to any largescale emergency.” According to the district, participation in this unique learning experience will help protect the safety and health of its students, staff and community. “This successful drill has provided the school district and our school personnel with knowledge that will enhance our emergency planning procedures,” said Carl Fraser, the district’s assistant superintendent for business. “It also provided the various emergency response agencies an opportunity to become familiar with the layout of the high school and with our security video system. As a result, their response to an actual emergency would be more efficient and effective.”
East Islip High School students Terence McHugh and William Meehan proved big scorers for the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association, earning awards at the SCMTA Awards Dinner on May 20th at the Watermill in Smithtown. Meehan, an incoming senior, was honored by the SCMTA with their Al Kalfus
Memorial Outstanding Junior Award for 2013. He was also given the SCMTA’s Higher Scorer Award for 2012-2013 and earned second place in the SCMTA’s March 13th calculus contest. McHugh, a senior who graduated on June 21st with the school’s Class of 2013, was given the SCMTA’s High Scorer
Award for 2012-2013. Both students also attended the New York State Mathematics League Spring Meet on April 13th at Byram Hills High School in Armonk, N.Y. and the American Regions Mathematics League Annual Competition on June 1st at Penn State University.

East Islip High School was the site of an emergency preparedness drill on June 22nd, held in conjunction with Exchange Ambulance of the Islips and the Suffolk County Police Department. Multiple local and neighboring fire departments and emergency medical services also participated in this active shooter drill, utilizing ambulances and associated medical equipment, along with the disaster response resources of Exchange Ambulance and the other participating agencies. The school and these first responders collaborated in a proactive way to ensure they are prepared and could respond effectively in the event of an actual emergency situation.

Summer Sessions The Gateway Acting School begins its 2013 summer session on July 1st, at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport. Founded by casting director Robin Joy Allan (Ghost, Lord of the Flies, Parenthood, Side Out, When Harry Met Sally), the Gateway Acting School is the educational division of The Gateway, Long Island’s oldest professional theatre, and attracts over

Kinney Elementary School’s spring concert on May 20th displayed the burgeoning musical talents of its students, and served to cap the East Islip School District’s May concert series, all held at the high school’s auditorium. The night began with the school’s advanced band, under the direction of Lynda Maniscalco. Listening Center An EJ Autism Foundation grant recently provided special education teacher Crystal Ann Chiari with a new listening center in her classroom at Connetquot Elementary School. The donation, one of six grants during the 2013-2014 school year from EJ Autism to district teachers, was part of EJ Autism’s continuing efforts to support East Islip’s schools and special needs programs across Long Island that work with children diagnosed with
autism. With the listening center, Chiari’s students are able to listen to a story and answer simple comprehension questions or complete listening activities. The latter aid the students by improving their attention skills, giving them simple directives such as finding a picture and coloring it a certain color, or finding a picture, listening to the given word and writing the word below the correct picture. “In the type of classroom
I have, we are in small groups for the majority of the day,” explained Chiari. “I added the listening center into our small group rotation for our English language arts block so that students could have the opportunity to practice listening comprehension and be exposed to higherlevel books, providing them as well with a positive model of reading fluency. My students love listening to stories and completing tasks independently.”
Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is calling for volunteers to learn and implement crisis intervention through texting! While texting is often looked at as a recreational way to communicate, the Crisis Center recognizes its importance in facilitating in-the-moment support and help to those in need
and in critical situations. If you are skilled in texting, then your skills are important and wanted! The first step is to become a Counselor Assistant. This free orientation training program takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in Bellmore. Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny
how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of
our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.
Are We Ready?
This week, I am attending Boys State, a highly selective program for some of New York’s most promising leaders. These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor. Throughout the week, these high school juniors will campaign to achieve their goal of election. For many of these kids, it is their first taste of freedom. It is their first time away from home. This pressure could lead to homesickness, and ultimately the most difficult experience of
their lives so far. Some will crack under this immense pressure. Others will find it to be a support. Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some. Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out. As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase. I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every
other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed. Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home. In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.

With the sun shining and blue skies as far as the eye could see, the commencement of the Islip High School Class of 2013 was celebrated on June 21 by members of the Board of Education, administration, family, friends, faculty and invited guests, officially completing the seniors’ educational journey through the Islip School District. During the ceremony, students were treated to words of advice and wisdom from Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel, High School Principal Dr. Eileen Rossman, valedictorian Jacqueline Croteau and salutatorian Gabrielle
Rocco. “Graduation is bittersweet,” remarked Dr. Rossman. “Many of you entered the first day of your senior year ready to celebrate your graduation, while others desperately desired to nestle forever in the comforts of Islip High School – your home away from home. But we know that all good things, must come to an end, and we have reached the end of our journey together. I have enjoyed working with you and watching you grow both intellectually and personally. You truly have Islip pride and today you exemplify the “Pride of Islip.”

Annual Art Show On Monday, May 20th, Mary G. Clarkson School hosted its Annual Art Show, led by Ms. Pat Zick. The well-attended show displayed over 3,000 pieces of student-generated art, filling three gymnasiums. The art on display was both two and three-dimensional and every student’s work was represented in at least four separate projects. A highly anticipated part of the show each year is the creation of large paper mache sculptures, a tradition begun in 2000 with a 2nd grade project. Since then, the unveiling of these
large pieces has become a crowd favorite. This year’s three-dimensional sculpture theme was “The Rainforest,” so students sculpted numerous plants and animals who call the rainforest home. A magnificent sixfoot jaguar, an iguana, a colorful toucan, a mama and baby gorilla, and an emerald tree boa were all displayed on stage along with an exquisite fifteen-foot mural. Much of the show’s work also featured interdisciplinary connections. In fact, running concurrently with the
Art Show was a large Science exhibit filled with innovative student experiments, from PreKindergarten to 2nd grade, with every classroom displaying interesting work in the hall. Mary G. Clarkson’s Annual Art Show was once again an enormous success, offering a priceless opportunity for all students to share their creativity and talent with their families and community. A big thank you to Ms. Zick and to Principal Garcia for helping to make the event such a success year in and year out.

East Islip High School’s Foreign Language Honor Society held its 29th Annual Induction Ceremony for new and former members on May 14th, packing the school’s cafeteria with proud parents and relatives. A total of 141 outstanding language students were recognized for their fluency in French, Italian, Spanish and American Sign Language, each receiving a certificate of honor and merit for his or her language of study, a pin representing his or her language’s country or countries, and a decorative carnation. FLHS President Nicole Corapi led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by greetings from the Society’s adviser, Patricia Childs; an introduction by Joseph Tursi Sr., a well-known Italian author and former chairman of the foreign
language department at Stony Brook University; and a welcoming speech from Principal William Brennen, who also serves as the chairman of the school’s foreign language department. This year, a candlelighting ceremony was added to the FLHS program, as four students, each representing one of the four languages taught in the East Islip School District, led the recitation of the organization’s oath. The quartet – Jillian Staebler for French, Matthew Carillo for Italian, Danielle LaFemina for Spanish and Danielle Mateichik for ASL – impressed both their teachers and families. “It was a very touching moment, because the students spoke so fluently,” said Childs. A second distinguished guest speaker, Carlo Davoli, the consulate general of

Italy in New York City, also addressed the students during the presentation of service awards. Special recognition was given to six students who had studied two languages other than English: Sabrina Adon (Spanish/ASL), Larry Burnham (Italian/ Spanish), Cristina Espinosa (Spanish/ASL), Jennifer Landaverde (French/ASL), Staebler (French/ASL) and Samantha Taveras (Spanish/ASL). The accompanying induction party proved complementary to the subject, as 520 appetizers were served pertaining to the different languages’ cultures and countries. After closing remarks by adviser Jovina Ricciardi, the students and their guests enjoyed a cultural performance by Brian & Co., including mambo dancing and salsa music.

In only her second year competing on the East Islip High School spring track team, Faith Penny proved that the sky is her limit with her AllState performance at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track and Field Championships. The June 8th event was held at Faller Field on the campus
of Middletown High School in Middletown, N.Y. Out of a field of the best 37 high jumpers from across New York State, Penny finished second overall in the large schools category and second overall for the entire state – the highest finish in high jump in modern East Islip athletic history. According to coach James
Marino, the sophomore also excels at 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. During the rest of the school year, she participates in volleyball in the fall and winter track. Penny will be following up her stunning AllState jumping with a well-deserved trip to the Nationals this summer.

Five East Islip Middle School Student Government officers participated in the Islip Elks 34th Annual Youth in Government Day on May 23rd. At the event, 15 students from local schools came together for an opportunity to learn about the Town of Islip and its government. The students met with Supervisor Tom Croci at 9 a.m., followed by tours of
the waste-to-energy facility and fire rescue station at Long Island MacArthur Airport. The festivities concluded with lunch at Tina’s II restaurant in Bay Shore and the presentation of participation certificates. “All of the students were very enthusiastic about their day of learning how the town government makes town residents’ lives better,” said student government adviser Dawn
Zeffiro. After the event, the students were asked to participate in an essay contest, writing about what they had learned during Youth in Government Day. East Islip’s Claudia Banville and Jessica Churpita tied as third-place winners and were presented with special certificates and awards at the town’s Flag Day ceremony on June 14th.
DUCKS PERFORMANCE - Timber Point Elementary School celebrated Family Night on May 11th, attending a Long Island Ducks baseball game at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip. The Timber Point Chorus sang God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch, and despite the Ducks falling to the Somerset Patriots, 12-6, the evening was full of fun for the students and their families.

Showcasing some of the finest musicianship the East Islip School District has to offer, East Islip School District’s two spring concerts for 2013 served as a strong reminder of just how impressive the school’s music program continues to be. Held on May 1st, the first concert kicked off with East Islip’s concert band, directed by Christopher Neske. The ensemble performed “The Sinfonians” by Clifton Williams, Antonin Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” and the “Harry Potter Symphonic Suite” by John Williams. Up next was the women’s choir, under the direction of Bethany Affelt and accompanied by pianist Elena Blyskal. The singers began with Giovanni Gastoldi’s “Sonatemi un balleto,” leading into “Stars I Shall Find,” a Sara Teasdale poem set to music by Audrey Snyder, and a medley of tunes from classic French musical “Les Misérables” arranged by Ed Lojeski.
