Fun activities included an obstacle course; a giant egg and spoon competition; and boxcar, rubber chicken, ice cream cone and potato sack relay races. Around the world I many times flew, Skimming the firmament when gray turned to blue. In many places I have been, The Seven Wonders I have seen. I socialized with the poor and the rich, Visited the Taj Mahal and the London Bridge. Year after year on Independence Day, I joined into the cheers and firework play. Thus again I hope to elevate your feeling, Cause melodious chants to hit the ceiling. I want to relay the written word just right, Pass on positive ideas that spread delight.

Fifth-graders at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School put their rocketry research to the test with an exciting demonstration at the adjacent high school field on June 5th. The event was the culmination of a month’s worth of studying the science of rocketry, the scientific method and Newton’s three laws of motion, using BOCES kits supplied by the district. “With the students’ knowledge of the scientific method, there was a great deal of discussion

regarding the variables that could effect the outcome of a rocket launch,” said teacher Robert Chiarelli. “The students were very aware that the slightest variations could effect the flight of their rockets.” During the week before the launches, as excitement and anticipation grew, the students focused on instructional reading, examining the assembly instructions and lists of parts before breaking into groups and constructing the rockets. The RCK students also read nonfiction articles

regarding the history of NASA and space exploration in the United States, and watched newsreel videos of rocket successes and disasters throughout America history, including the Apollo and space shuttle programs. “During the process of making the rockets, we learned what a nose cone and launch lug are,” said student Kuba Kolodziejak. “When we finally finished our rockets and launched, we got to catch them. It was spectacular.”

Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta ﬁsh, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}
