His participation in East Islip’s track and field team’s undefeated championship season has been his high school highlight. The senior was also a strong football player at left tackle and defensive end for three years, contributing to multiple Redmen championship game victories and earning a six-letter jacket. Coupe, who plans to major in criminal justice, chose CUNY Queens primarily for its academics.

Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”
and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly
shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.
Servicemen and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard joined together for the 8th Annual Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 11th at the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) in Nissequogue. This year, 150 active members of the military powered out of the Smithtown Marina on 61 boats for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie - a record high for this event. The winning fish weighed in at 6 lbs 4 ozs and was caught by Smithtown Bay Yacht Club member Andy Smith. He was accompanied on the boat by his first mate, Ret. Colonial Rob Landsiedel, Major Jesse Fritz and Tech Sgt Nathan Dean from the 106th Rescue Wing - Air National Guard. Andy’s name will be added to the coveted winner’s plaque, the Ed Jakubowski
Memorial Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament Award, named in honor of a great patron of Soldiers on the Sound, which is proudly displayed in the SBYC lobby. “One of the best things about the event is the people you meet. In 2010 my crew consisted of Captain Jesse Fritz, Colonel Rob Landsiedel and another 106th Rescue Wing member. Since then Jesse and I have become good friends,” said Andy Smith. He continues “each year we do well and everyone goes home with dinner but this time we decided to go for the win! That meant fishing around rocks and losing multiple rigs snagging bottom. The majority of the fleet went west but we went north and east to Crane’s neck where big fish are caught. The first fish was a 19 inch keeper and things looked promising but then the
wind kicked up and we had to move to maintain the drift. On the first drift in the new spot I felt a light tug and then another, I set up on the fish and pulled a 6 lb 4 oz fish to the surface. Rob carefully netted it and we were excited. Throughout the rest of the event we kept hearing of other decent fish caught but at weigh-in we took the prize. It felt great to win but more importantly to share the victory with my crew.” Soldiers on the Sound began with breakfast and boat assignments. For some it was an introduction, for others, a reunion. The Marines from Garden City presented the colors as the National Anthem was played. Then they were off... 61 boats paraded out the Smithtown Marina to meet up in the Smithtown Bay. At the stroke of 9 a.m., they were all off to their “secret” spots to try to reel
in a “doormat” fluke. The weather cooperated until about noon, when for the first time, it rained on the Tournament. The bright and tough young military men and women were prepared and stuck it out. Soldiers, captains and first mates returned from fishing to an incredible display of the American Flag Arch provided by the Smithtown and St. James Fire Departments. Once on shore, everyone feasted on an incredible array of food including hot dogs and hamburgers cooked by members of the Hauppauge Fire Department, a ‘low country boil’ complete with shellfish and corn and a smorgasbord of catered dishes provided by Ruland Road Deli (Melville). Every participant was eligible to win incredible prizes donated by local merchants and national corporations. The grand prize was donated by

Additional grand prizes included custom engraved military reels from Wes Seigler at TRUTH Reels, 2 night/3 day stay at Hawks Cay Florida Keys Resort, 55” and 40” TV’s and kayaks. resident Mark Garry, who was inspired by the images of war, to do something to “give back” to the local servicemen and women for their service to our country. Mark teamed up with fellow SBYC members Skip Hein and Roger Smith and together they pooled their resources. Skip’s military background made him a perfect liaison with the local military community and since Roger served on the board at the SBYC, that solidified the relationship between the event and the location. Together they decided that a fishing tournament would be much more entertaining and relaxing than just a big party. “I decided on a fishing tournament because I always found fishing to be a stress reliever for me,” said Garry. “When work was busy, and it always

Our Public Health Information Line is one tool we use to accomplish our goals.” The New York Sanitary Code designates over 70 communicable diseases as reportable. The illnesses of high concern at this time are Zika virus, West Nile virus and rabies virus. Residents who think they may have been exposed to these viruses or have questions or concerns about these illnesses are encouraged to call the Suffolk County Public Health Information Line at 631.787.2200. Zika virus, newly emerging as a worldwide threat to public health, is
spread primarily by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, through sexual transmission or transfusion. Although Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are not present in New York State, a related species named Aedes albopictus is active in the downstate region, and may be able to effectively transmit the virus. Research is ongoing. Zika virus may cause mild or no symptoms in many, however, Zika virus infection has the potential to cause severe birth defects. Women who are pregnant or of childbearing age and their male partners are urged to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. If you wish to keep informed about national and/or local developments regarding Zika virus, may visit the Suffolk County website at Zika Information. For medical questions
related to Zika virus, contact your health care provider or call the Public Health Information Line. Rabies virus is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies virus, which is invariably fatal. Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection. Residents of all towns are asked to call the Information Line number to report raccoons that come into contact with humans or pets. With the report of a rabid raccoon in Nassau County last March, Suffolk County has increased surveillance of raccoons in the Towns of Huntington and Babylon. Residents of those towns are asked to report: • raccoons that come into contact with humans or pets
• raccoons that are acting abnormally • raccoons that are dead for reasons other than motor-vehicle crash If you have been exposed to a bat in your home or outdoors, call the Public Health Information Line. If a bat is in your house and you have any questions about whether the bat has been in contact with people or pets, call the Information Line before releasing it and follow CDC guidelines in capturing it, avoiding any contact with the bat. Although it is estimated that only 20 percent of those who become infected with West Nile virus will develop clinically noticeable symptoms, West Nile virus can be fatal. Individuals who are most at risk for severe infection include those over 50 years of age and those with chronic illness or compromised immune systems. These individuals are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes during the season. Swim Safety Program Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro would like to inform residents that the Suffolk County Police Athletic League is offering its “Swim for Survival Instructional Program” for those children who have no swimming experience. The program is designed to teach basic water survival skills to children in a short period of time. This
program is not for children who have had basic swimming instructions, either through the Red Cross, Y.M.C.A., or Safety Swim Programs. The Program is open to children 5 to 10 years old. The instructions will be conducted on four (4) consecutive weeks. Certified instructors from St. Joseph’s College

Friends of America’s Vet Dogs recently presented a $14,000 check to America’s Vet Dogs to sponsor two new service/assistance dogs for honorably discharged veterans in need. The presentation took place at the America’s Vet Dogs & Guide Dog Foundation facility in Smithtown. The proceeds were generated at a recent Chinese Auction held
in Sayville by Friends of America’s Vet Dogs - a group of 22 friends who joined together with the sole purpose of helping as many veterans as possible through the assistance dog program. Group members come from Sayville, Patchogue, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Farmingville and Holbrook and events are held in all of those communities year
round to support America’s Vet Dogs. Last year, the group sponsored three new service/assistance dogs and hopes to raise enough for a third dog this year as well. The group will be sponsoring a $10 Comedy Show Night in Bohemia on July 10th and can be reached at 631.567.9493 for further details.
Flags & Hearts United In a sunny showcase of pride, patriotism and unity, Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School celebrated Flag Day on June 14th with vocal performances, waving flags and a nod to a beloved principal. After a processional parade by members of American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411, Interim Principal Brian McCarthy introduced honored guests including American Legion Post Commander Matthew Stahl, State Sen. Phil Boyle and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi. The
flag was raised, the Pledge of Allegiance recited along with explanations from 10 fifth-grade students and a version in American Sign Language led by Teagan Rao and second-graders. After the introduction of military guests, the TrebleMakers choral group led the assembled guests in “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and McCarthy presented four studentcontest awards, one for each grade. As music teacher Michael Baur and the TrebleMakers led the CRES community in singing
“God Bless the USA,” thoughts of the school’s longtime principal, Jeannette Feminella, were never far from their hearts. Feminella is out on medical leave as she battles cancer. “Each year, Mrs. Feminella looks forward to the singing of this song more than any of the others, so this year we dedicated our singing of it to her,” said Baur. Other songs included by the the TrebleMakers in the morning’s celebration were “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.”
A Quilt is Built

Showcasing their growing planning and tool use skills as well as pride in their school, eight students in East Islip Middle School’s Family and Consumer Science Club – Mia Castillo, Juli Chillemi, Meagan Diaz, Evie Orlando, Emma Sasso, Miranda Stockton, Kasey Turtell and Kim Turtell – worked tirelessly to complete an “East Islip Pride” T-shirt quilt, now on display in the school’s main lobby. With help from FACS teacher Dani Shehada and
paraprofessional Diane Doyle, the students used East Islip Redmen shirts to create a unique continuous quilt pattern. Once the colors were chosen, the students were taught how to properly trace the shirts into 12x12 fabric squares and to cut them out accurately using fabric shears. Then the students assembled the quilt by pinning all of the T-shirts together in the pattern they created. Each student took a part in sewing the quilt permanently on the sewing machine. In a final
creative decision, the FACS Club members chose to add a thick black border around the quilt to finalize its look. “I love how the quilt came out,” said Orlando, a sixth-grader. “I can’t believe how professional it looks. “Our East Islip Pride T-shirt quilt was a labor of love which took over four months to complete,” said Shehada. “Quilt making is a fun, creative and practical way to create something that you can have forever.”

The production was enhanced by life-size character figures of Cinderella and Prince Charming, created by Liz Gibbons. “The involvement of administration, teaching staff, parents and students was essential to creating such successful performances,” said King.
“Our second-graders were fantastic and I couldn’t be more proud.” “The singing, dancing and acting was first rate,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “The students of Connetquot once again demonstrated that they have a bright and exciting future ahead in the performing arts. Volunteers are needed for the annual Good Shepherd Hospice/ Bob Sweeney Camp H.O.P.E., a two day bereavement camp for children who have
lost a loved one and their surviving caregivers. The camp program, sponsored jointly by Catholic Health Services’ Good Shepherd Hospice
and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation, will be held on July 17th and 18th on the grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport. Children who have
suffered the loss of an immediate family member are accompanied to the camp by a surviving parent or caregiver and all are offered the opportunity to
identify, explore and share their grief experiences with other grieving families in a variety of activities. Camp H.O.P.E. is staffed by the professional
bereavement staff of Good Shepherd Hospice, as well as volunteers from both hospice and the

Night at the Museum
QUALITY HOME GROWN FLOWERS SINCE 1985 • • AHRC Suffolk advocates through art with the “It Matters to Me” campaign! On June 16th, over 200 people attended AHRC Suffolk’s Night at the Museum featuring their It Matters to Me campaign! The It Matters to Me campaign was born from the voices of individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, their families, friends, caregivers and community who have rallied to support their right to choose how they live their lives! With proposed changes coming from the state that would greatly affect AHRC Suffolk’s programs and services, they decided to go back to their
grassroots beginnings and advocate through an art project created by the staff and individuals at their Westhampton Beach location. Although the project was originally just for the individuals that receive support from AHRC and their families, they thought why not extend it into the community and the state by asking ARCs throughout New York State to participate as well. What started off as a small mural containing 400 hundred squares ended with a large It Matters to Me mural that contained over 4,000 squares and is continuing to grow. Each person that participated

was asked to fill out a small square by telling AHRC what mattered to them; when these small squares were put together a beautiful work of art was created, showing how everything from work to food to fireman mattered! Time and time again people wrote that their homes matter and their work; if you are interested in becoming a part of the campaign and filling out a square or you are interested in learning more about the programs and services that will be directly affected by the proposed changes from the state, please contact AHRC Suffolk’s Foundation Office at 631.585.0100.
