Arts & Science On May 15th, the faculty of Mary G. Clarkson School eagerly opened the doors to invite the community to explore the artistic and scientific works of our students. As in past years, from the moment you entered the doors each of your senses were immediately bombarded with unending displays of classroom projects representing the content areas of ELA, math, science

and social studies. This year’s theme of Reaching For The Stars, presented in the gymnasium, brought us a life-sized spaceship that was so cool you just had to take a picture in it. Mr. Kevin Carroll, Mary G. Clarkson’s new art teacher, emphasizes combining literature, science and art to encourage learning for his students. The impressive feature

about this annual display is that the kindergarten, first, and second graders of Mary G. Clarkson create every artistic item. Finally, we also thank all of our parents who participated in the Science Fair by helping their children craft their special projects. We hope you enjoyed all the talent and creativity of our show and please come again next year. We promise to show you more!

WEEKEND LEARNING - Bay Shore students had a great time learning on the weekends this spring. Many elementary-level students took part in the SCOPE Saturday Enrichment Program, which allowed them to dive deeper into scientific topics. They learned about how art and science can intersect, computer programming, crime scene investigation, engineering and many other topics. What a great way to spend a Saturday!

how she became a judge. Because the students were so motivated by this, Mrs. Crosby took the lead from her students and changed her lesson plan from the genre study of biographies to letter writing. In their letters, they asked questions and commented on their aspirations that ranged from the status of her health to wanting to become a judge. The students also illustrated their favorite part of the book and drew selfportraits that accompanied their letters. During a morning announcement, students were pleasantly surprised to learn that Justice Sonia Sotomayor had individually responded to their letters and sent a personalized autograph to each of them. The students were called down to the principal’s office and were

presented with their letters from Justice Sotomayor. In her letter, she reminds the students to, “always remember that you can become anything you want to be by studying and working hard. Students from Mrs. Crosby’s ENL class at Brook Avenue School discovered that writing is powerful when they received a response back from a Supreme Court Justice. The students were learning about the genre of biographies and were particularly surprised to learn that the biography of Justice Sonia Sotomayor is about someone who is still alive today. The book that was read to them was Sonia Sotomayor: A Judge Grows in the Bronx/La juez que creció en el Bronx by Jonah Winter, Edel Rodriguez (Illustrator). The students were so intrigued by this that they asked if they could write a letter to her to ask more about her life and share their thoughts of how much they enjoyed learning about her childhood and
