Lindenhurst Middle School to the familiar strains of Pomp & Circumstance. In just a few short hours, they will embark on the next chapter of their lives, as proud alumni of Lindy High, the last dozen or so years of schooling an already-fading memory. I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25th, 2000, a Saturday morning. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the old grass field, as our parents and loved ones perched on the wooden bleachers excitedly waiting for the ceremony to begin. Behind the scenes, in the locker room of the gymnasium, I paced nervously in my cap and gown, binder in hand, silently running through the words of my valedictory address. As my guidance counselor passed by, she glanced my way. “Do you need a piece of gum Jamie? You look a little green.” And green I was, as I stood on the stage a few moments later, listening to our principal introduce me as the student
for a girl who had never held a job outside of a part-time assistant teaching gig at her local dance studio. But that’s what high school was for, to cultivate those lofty goals and give birth to the endless possibilities borne from a college education and our eventual entrance into the great workforce. I often wonder how many of us wound up doing anything comparable to that which we aspired to on that particular day, some 18 years ago. How many ever truly know what they want to be when they grow up? Perhaps we’re not supposed to. Much has changed in the nearly two decades that have elapsed as we spread our wings and went our respective separate ways in the search for a lifetime of fulfillment. For some, college called, degrees were earned and positions accepted at prestigious corporations. For others, the path evolved a bit differently, perhaps in settling down to start
traditional existence. To each his or her own, as they say. Ten years later, at our first reunion gathering, we reconvened as a class, a bit older and a tad wiser; overall, though, not much seemed to have changed. Looking across the bar at the old familiar faces, it was as if no time had passed. In the blink of an eye, we were back on that field, decked out in our Bulldog green and white, the world at our fingertips. In just two short years, we will likely gather once again, this time at our 20th reunion. How will the stories have evolved? What new tales will we have to share? Will the past still seem as easily within reach as it once was? I have a feeling it will. As they say in my district ~ Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog ~ and it’s true. To the graduating Class of 2018 . . . may your memories be just as fond 18 years from now as they are today. Mine certainly are.

Along with good mental health, MHAW recognizes the importance of physical health. Classes include an array of indoor and outdoor physical activities, as well as the chemical free garden right near their Ronkonkoma facility. In the garden, people learn how to grow their own food while connecting to the natural environment. Vegetables, fruits and herbs are donated to Charlotte’s Table food pantry, open each Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., which serves the broader community. Anyone interested in

MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Hosted by Founding Sons Law Enforcement/Military Motorcycle Club and Impressive and Aggressive Motor Club, attendees will visit up close with event registrants and their beautiful motorcycles, custom and classic cars. The Beth C. Tortolani Foundation Helps Provide Counseling and Support for Low-Income Breast Cancer Patients The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Beth C. Tortolani Foundation which allows the program to provide free social work services to ensure that underserved women are able to overcome barriers to care. These services include bilingual counseling and patient navigation for breast cancer patients treated at local hospitals and provide referrals to community agencies that provide assistance such as food, transportation and legal services. The grant also helps to facilitate a Spanish-language support group, called Cafecito, held twice a month in Westbury. “Our licensed social workers offer free bilingual counseling to breast cancer patients treated at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) as well as those referred from other local hospitals,” says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. In addition to the hotline - 800.877.8077 - the Adelphi Program offers a live chat with a licensed social worker, support groups in English and Spanish and referrals to free or low-cost mammography screening.

Comedy on Long Island has always been hot but now it’s roasting! The 2018 Long Island Roast Battle had its semifinals on Wednesday June 20th at Revolution Bar & Music Hall in Amityville with the final two comedian combatants emerging. Bill Luhrs of Long Beach and Stephen Rocco Parrillo of Brentwood won their roast battles against Jessica Collazo and Zack Zorovich, respectively to make it to the finals of the competition. Roast Battles have gained popularity over the past few years, especially in the NYC comedy scene. The Stand Comedy Club in Manhattan has hosted these contests featuring comics from New York versus comics from Los Angeles with much fanfare. Roast Battles are one-on-one competitions featuring comedians performing jokes about their opposition with three judges choosing who wins the battle. At Revolution Bar & Music Hall, other local comics act as the judges. 16 comedians from Long Island have
vied for the title of Long Island’s Best Roaster with the winner walking away with a cash prize. This is the 2nd annual Long Island Roast Battle, with East Meadow’s Mike Keegan winning the inaugural clash. Copiague comedian Adam X. Parsons has produced and hosted each Roast Battle show and says that this year’s event is the best one yet. “Everyone who has taken part of the Long Island Roast Battle this year have been amazing”, says Parsons. “From the staff at Revolution, to the judges and of course the competitors, this has been an awesome experience for our audiences.” The finals of the Long Island Roast Battle will be held on Wednesday July 11th at Revolution Bar & Music Hall, starting at 8:00 p.m. and will also feature performances from local comedians before the showdown between Bill Luhrs and Stephen Rocco Parrillo. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.
Who is responsible for a selfie gone wrong on a school trip to an art museum? Is Macy’s responsible for injuries caused by an out of control Dora balloon at its Thanksgiving Day parade? These cases and other negligence cases were tried by Bay Shore High School students in the high school’s annual Law Day mock trial competition held on April 26th. Eighteen teams of three students each performed their roles as lawyers and witness before attorneys from Bay Shore, Brightwaters and neighboring communities. The attorneys served as
judges for the competition and mentors as they gave the students advice on proper trial techniques, the rules of evidence and how to better frame their arguments to become more forceful advocates. Students Kya Primm, Christine De la Cruz and Jack Gartland earned first place honors. In a very close second place were Muqsiteen Aleema, Aimee Quinlan and Sofia Flores. The third place team consisted of Husbaan Sheikh, Gianna Greco and Peter Roy. In fourth place was the team of seniors Joseph Canale, Derek Brown and Sam Murdock. Judges for the
War Veteran Honored competition included local attorneys, Jack Finnerty, Esq., Timothy Finnerty, Esq., Ellen Kluepfel, Esq., Nick Santomartino, Esq., Thomas Telesca, Esq., Robert Torres, Esq., Leah Winfield, Esq. and law student Rachel Robinson. Bay Shore High School Thespian Troupe 2963 recently held its annual induction and awards ceremony. The students who were inducted into the troupe have participated in the drama program
in various ways, whether by performing on stage, playing in the pit orchestra or as a member of the backstage crew. The troupe also handed out awards to recognize excellence in performance among its members.
This year’s ceremony was particularly special because it marked the 50th anniversary of the troupe. Former members and directors were on hand to celebrate. Congratulations to the inductees and award winners!

The Islip Town Board paid special recognition to the Islip High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse team at the June Town Board meeting. The 2018 NYS Class C Champions won the coveted title in Rochester, NY earlier this month. Supervisor Angie Carpenter, members of
the Islip Town Board, and outgoing Islip Schools Superintendent Susan Schnebel joined with Head Coach Keith Scheidel, Assistant Coaches Jeff Aiello, Tom Zummo and Terrence Foley. JV Coaches Joe DeBatt, Nick Apicella and Greg Ruccia were also recognized for their contributions.

On Friday, April 20th, the entire 7th grade at Bay Shore Middle School participated in a citizenship awareness day. Students from all 7th grade teams were asked to design a t-shirt that contained an inspirational quote and other motivational words or visuals. Then, both the teachers and students wore their shirts to school and
explained their messages to their peers during their social studies classes throughout the day. The students focused on a variety of citizenship topics, such as anti-bullying, recycling, volunteerism, healthy choices, and social/political awareness. Mary G. Clarkson School presented its annual VIP (Very Important Person) Day for all of its first graders. Grandparents, Great Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles arrived and were welcomed with a
delicious breakfast of fruit, muffins, cake, bagels, juice and coffee. Ms. Garcia, Mary G. Clarkson’s Principal, acted as Master of Ceremonies as the first graders united for a musical performance.
Afterwards, the VIP’s were all invited to attend special activities in the classrooms, where the children had the opportunity to share displays of the things they have been working on.

STATE AWARD - Emily Prunty, a Bay Shore High School student enrolled in the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center’s Professional Photography and Digital Imaging Program, captured the gold medal at the New York State SkillsUSA Competition held in Syracuse. A Year of Music An entire school year of hard work, passion and dedication to music from both students and teachers was celebrated in style at East Islip’s annual spring concert series. The performances, all held at the high school’s Rydzeski Hall, included East Islip Middle School on May 7th and 9th, John F. Kennedy Elementary School on May 14th, Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School on May 16th, and East Islip High School on May 22nd and 23rd. “Our spring concert series, featuring students from grades 3-12, began with our third-graders performing on the recorders and singing, and ended with our seniors
performing their final number on the East Islip High School stage,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art and music. “Smiles and tears of joy were shared among our students, teachers and community members as the music department took our breath away with each performance. We are so very proud of all the students and teachers who shared their musicianship this spring season.” “I couldn’t be more proud of both of my beginner and advanced orchestras,” said JFK Orchestra Director Jaime DeMaria. “They performed with energy, dynamics and –
most importantly – heart.
