A Trip Of A Lifetime known for its oxcarts with hand-painted wheels. The tour continued with a visit to Arenal Volcano National Park, where the high schoolers were able to hike on rainforest trails and observe wildlife and plant species. The hike also provided access to a closer view of the active volcano itself. The next day, the students went on a kayak excursion on Arenal Lake,
followed by another hike to experience hanging bridges, where they saw wild boar, snakes, birds and monkeys. The day ended with a dip in a natural hot spring heated by the volcano. The students next visited a local elementary school in the town of Monteverde, where they donated items that they brought from home – such as Frisbees, soccer balls, footballs,

The last segment of the trip was spent along the Pacific coastline, including surfing lessons and a visit to Manuel Antonio National Park, where the students spent the afternoon swimming, relaxing and encountering sloths and friendly spider monkeys. The final night of their Costa Rican adventure was spent back in San José, concluding with a farewell dinner that featured a dance
celebration and folklore show. “Our students agree that this was a trip of a lifetime, one that they will never forget,” said Spanish teacher Betty Muller. “They were able to appreciate the love that Costa Ricans have for their country. One cannot understand how beautiful this country is and why its people are so happy unless you visit it.”

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

The Bay Shore High School International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program held its annual IB Diploma Student Recognition Night to honor the high school seniors who have completed the necessary requirements to qualify for the IB diploma. Superintendent Mr. Joseph Bond, Assistant Principal Dr. Michelle Garrett, Assistant Principal Mr. Steve Gordon and IB Coordinator Mr. Jonathan
Nelson were on hand to congratulate students. IB diploma students were presented to the audience by Mr. Justin Martinich, the Extended Essay Coordinator. As each student came forward, their Extended Essay research paper title was announced and they received a certificate of achievement and an IB key chain. An IB graduation stole was placed on each diploma student’s
shoulders to signify their completion of the IB diploma requirements. The light blue stole will be worn at the graduation ceremony to acknowledge their high academic achievement. After each student was recognized, the students honored one of their teachers, Mr. Elias Romero, for his work helping them through the IB program.
Kaczynski Signs For Cheerleading East Islip High School senior Danielle Kaczynski will join the cheerleading team at LIU Post this fall. She is the first East Islip student to earn a cheerleading scholarship.
Kaczynski, who plans to major in business and minor in fashion merchandising, has been involved with cheerleading since age 4, starring as a member of All Star
Cheerleading, coaching younger athletes, serving as junior varsity captain at East Islip and performing on the varsity team for the last two years.

Teddy Bear Clinic Kindergartners at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently brought in their beloved stuffed animals to participate in the school’s annual Teddy Bear Clinic, sponsored by Good Samaritan Hospital
Medical Center. Good Samaritan’s Trauma and Child Life departments – represented by pediatric trauma coordinator Cathy Wirtenson, child life specialist Nancy Kennedy and staff assistant Lauren Buckley – worked together
to present the interactive half-hour clinic, which covers car and helmet safety and gives the students a chance to dress up as doctors and nurses and take care of their injured toys.

17 Student-Athletes Earn 21 Medals At Special Olympics

For the fourth consecutive year, the East Islip Redmen competed at the Special Olympics New York Spring Games North, held on May 11 at Bethpage High School. At the end of a spectacular day of competition, camaraderie and team spirit, the students brought home eight gold, eight silver and five bronze medals as well as six fourth-place ribbons,
three fifth-place ribbons and three sixth-place ribbons. East Islip started its first Special Olympics team in 2016, entering six athletes that year to compete in the Spring Games. Since the program’s inception, 27 students have participated. Coached by physical education teachers Laura O’Donnell and Julie Susskind, this year’s team
grew to 17 participating student-athletes, including seven from East Islip Middle School (Jonathan Carberry, Rile Carrillo, Chloe Gagnon, Emily Kolensky, Jake Kozak, Janissa Llyod and Michael Pacheco), nine from East Islip High School (Anthony Agresta, Danny DiOrios , Emily Maccarone, Julia Modico, Santiago Pacheco, Robert Phillips,

The team members and their families enjoyed an annual pregame breakfast on May 9 in the middle school cafeteria, also attended by district administrators and volunteers, and the students were recognized at the Board of Education’s May business meeting.
