and peppers, potatoes, and vegetables. The food was carefully packed for 3 work shifts; the day shift, the 3:00pm to 11:00pm shift and the midnight shift. Administrators provided information on the number of employees working in each shift. The hot food was delivered on Thursday, May 21st, 2020 for the day shift, and Nursing Home staff reheated the food for the remaining two shifts at the appropriate times. This was one small way the Knights of Columbus chose to show thanks to the healthcare workers at Maria Regina during the pandemic. The food
was delivered by Brumidi Catering. Carmine Soldano, President of the Constantino Brumidi Lodge and also the Treasurer of the Suffolk County Conference Knights of Columbus over saw the delivery of the food and met with some of the administration at Maria Regina. “This is a great example how two great organizations can help each other and work together to show our gratitude to our Health Care workers.” The meals were enjoyed immensely by nursing home staff.

Outdoor living is wildly popular, as more and more homeowners are bringing elements once reserved for home interiors into their backyards. When designing outdoor living spaces, homeowners may learn about biophilic design, an architectural concept that aims to incorporate natural elements into outdoor living spaces. Proponents of biophilic design say it satisfies an innate human need to affiliate with nature, thereby helping to reduce stress that people may experience after being stuck indoors for much of their days. Biophilic design is often part of a home interior design, but many homeowners also embrace it when designing their outdoor living spaces. For example, surrounding outdoor living areas with noninvasive plants, flowers and trees and using natural materials like wood and stone when building such spaces are great ways to embrace biophilic design and create a tension-free ambiance in outdoor living spaces.

Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of Gisela Skoglund will be on view at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown through August 1, 2020 The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular banking hours. Kings Park artist Gisela Skoglund’s life has taken her through many forms of artistic expression. Early on, her original passion was for oil on canvas. In
High School, she was awarded a scholarship to Pratt Institute where she pursued advertising art. All her endeavors have brought her to the use of painting in the mediums of watercolor, acrylic and oil as well as the use of pen and ink. Gisela’s inspirations come from the beauty of nature, photography and other sights that appear in everyday life. She has exhibited her work in juried and invitational shows across Long Island. “I find that painting transports

3 Tips To Planning Efficient Home-Cooked Meals
A few generations ago, dining out was an experience reserved for special occasions. However, until recently, when restaurants were shuttered in the wake of the public health crisis prompted by the spread of COVID-19, many people were dining out multiple times a week. Hospitality solutions provider Fourth surveyed 1,000 American adults in 2019 and 56 percent reported dining out at least two to three times per week. Ten percent said they ate out four to six times each week, while 6 percent said they dined out everyday. People accustomed to relying on restaurant for meals multiple times per week may be unaccustomed to cooking many meals at home, which has become the norm thanks to restrictions placed on restaurants and other food-related businesses as part of COVID-19 social distancing precautions. Learning how to shop for food and prepare items by maximizing available ingredients can reduce
trips to the store and help people reduce food waste at a time when food is not as readily available as it once was. 1. Plan meals/browse circulars Meal planning and shopping lists are vital tools for people preparing meals at home. Without doing so, individuals can be left floundering in the supermarket, spending more money than necessary and making impulse purchases (all the while forgetting items they truly need). Use sales circulars to browse weekly discounted items at stores. Build a week’s worth of meals off of these sale items — going so far as to write out a cursory menu — then fill in any extra ingredients or staples needed on a shopping list. Leave a day or two for leftovers. Try organizing the list to follow the natural layout where items are arranged in the store.

The journal will show how much you are eating and where you can eliminate some calories. The other big issue is not consuming enough water. When people are home they are less focused on their water intake. It’s important to make a conscious effort to have a big bottle or glass of water at your workspace. Also, this allows you to stretch your legs to refill your water. Q.: To maintain a healthy eating lifestyle, what foods should people look to purchase that will keep them satisfied? It’s a good idea to stock up on nuts, low-fat cheeses, yogurts, wholegrain crackers or pretzels, hummus and fruits and vegetables. You can have veggies cut up and ready to go in the fridge for a healthy afternoon snack and pair them with hummus or a dip made out of Greek yogurt for protein. Snacks that are high in fiber and/or protein will keep you feeling full longer. Q: What foods should people work to avoid? Don’t buy your favorite
desserts, cookies or snacks. When people feel stressed, they are likely to reach for treats first. If you have a sweet tooth, find alternate ways to satisfy it. Instead of very sweet cereals, choose cereals high in fiber with a hint of sweetness. If you crave chocolate, opt for 60% or higher dark chocolate. Q: What types of foods with a long shelf life should people consider purchasing to help them maintain a healthy diet? I prefer to buy prechopped frozen vegetables over canned vegetables for many reasons. They are often picked at their ripest, last several months in the freezer and don’t have any salt or preservatives. With canned goods, look for “no salt added” and always rinse them in a colander before cooking. With fruit, I like buying oranges, apples and pears as they tend to last long in the refrigerator. Ground turkey, chicken breast and different cuts of fish are good sources of lean protein and can be stored in the freezer. Q: Which foods can help people boost their immune system? Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help your immune system. Citrus fruits like oranges,
grapefruits and clementines are known to be loaded with vitamin C. Also, you can also get plenty of antioxidants from strawberries and spinach. I like yogurt and yogurt drinks since they have probiotics that can also help your immune system. It’s important to note that your immune system needs sleep and plenty of water throughout the day to function properly.
