Math-A-Thon Fundraiser

On Thursday, June 18th, the Bay Shore Board of Education announced the appointment of Joseph C. Bond as Interim Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1st, 2015 through June 30th, 2016. Mr. Bond will fill the vacancy created by the departure of current Superintendent, Dr. Karen B. Salmon. Joseph Bond has helped guide Brentwood UFSD’s current strategic direction, raising graduation rates by 20 percent, guiding five schools from identified status to good standing, passing five consecutive budgets while maintaining the highest fiscal stability rating, and managing capital construction projects totaling $120 million. Mr. Bond is a proven leader who shares our vision for raising academic achievement, engaging our community and creating a public education system that serves our students and families effectively. “We are confident that Joseph Bond is the right person to guide Bay Shore through this time of transition,” said Board of Education President Gregory

The Maroon Echo won more than 40 honors at the Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards, including the prestigious Student Journalist of the Year, won by senior Alejandro Serrano, the Advisor of the Year, won by English teacher Walt Fishon, and, for the eighth time, the Long Island High School Newspaper of the Year.

This marks the third year in a row that Bay Shore’s student journalists have been named the best on Long Island, according to the editors of the Long Island Press. Mr. Fishon has been named Advisor of the Year seven times. Bay Shore’s journalists took home 16 first place awards, 11 second place honors, 14 third place awards and an honorable

mention. Among the winners were Madison Flotteron who took home the First Amendment/ Freedom of Speech award, Amber Farooq, who received the Robert W. Greene award for investigative journalism as well as the award for best science/health article and Sharon Ahmed, who won the Aura Diaz Award for First Person writing.

Celebrating Flag Day

Black & White Ball The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at WinthropUniversity Hospital held its Ninth Annual Black and White Ball at Oheka Castle on April 30th, an exquisite evening that raised more than $300,000 to benefit the CCFK’s essential psychosocial programs. The evening began with a warm welcome from Gala Emcee Sophia Hall of WCBS News Radio before Ashley Carlo, Manager at the CCFK, introduced a compelling new video, 6 Minutes at the CCFK, to the packed house. Scattered Summer Thoughts Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined hundreds of local residents at Commack Road Elementary School to celebrate Flag Day. Students, teachers, and local officials all shared their feelings about what the flag represents to them. The school’s choir, nicknamed the Treblemakers, led the assembled crowd in multiple renditions of patriotic songs. Several students recited essays and poems that had been

written for a contest in honor of Flag Day, and the students collectively delivered a hearty “Thank You” to the veterans of American Legion Post 411, who were in attendance as well. “It’s said that Flag Day was started by a teacher, and so it’s wonderful to see teachers, students, and parents all coming together to celebrate what it means to be an American,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I’m so proud of the students for

all of their hard work, and for the work that their teachers have done in getting these students to respect our flag and share a keen appreciation of our nation’s values.” The winners of the student writing contest were: • Sara Geldmacher, 2nd Grade • Kylie McDonald, 3rd Grade • Avery Falco, 4th grade • Anthony Lopez, 5th Grade

As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Broadcaster Brilliance The 2015 staff of East Islip High School’s official student newspaper, The Broadcaster, continued a winning tradition by again earning a first place award for excellence from the American Scholastic Press Association. This marks the fifth consecutive time that East Islip students’ efforts have received recognition by the ASPA, a national organization of high school newspaper competitions based in College Point, New York.

ASPA judges reviewed issues of the paper’s print edition and analyzed content, artwork, design, organization, editing and creativity. They used a detailed rubric as a scoring tool to evaluate each area, and awarded 885 out of a possible 1,000 points to The Broadcaster. The Broadcaster also earned a remarkable 17 awards – a new school record – at the annual Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards, hosted by Hofstra University on May
