Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez recently presented Thomas Parham with a proclamation commemorating his 100th birthday at a celebration held at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Brentwood. Thomas Parham was born on May 14, 1921. Thomas married his wife and together they had nine children, thirtytwo grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Thomas loves to travel, especially to Florida, and

enjoys watching baseball, basketball, and swimming on television. In addition to being a devoted husband and father, Thomas is a WWII Veteran, who served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 as an Infantryman, as well as in the Ordinance Corps, Quarter Master and Fireman while in the military. Thomas is currently serving as a Deacon at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Brentwood. Thomas is admired

and respected by his family, friends and peers. His cheerfulness and consideration for others have made him a valued member of the New Jerusalem family and Brentwood community. He believes that keeping active, taking care of your health, spending time doing things you enjoy and being surrounded by the people you love, are the secrets to living a long, happy, fulfilling life.

Celebrating July 4th complex as the nation they helped to found developed. According to History. com, Adams and Jefferson were confidantes in the 1780s. But as time wore on, each man developed a different view of what the United States government should be, creating a rift in their relationship that was only widened by the 1800 presidential election. The men ran against each other in that

election, which is still considered one of the more contentious elections in American history. Jefferson ultimately claimed victory, a result so unnerving to Adams that he left Washington, D.C. prior to Jefferson’s inauguration. The two men would ultimately reconcile, exchanging more than 150 letters before dying within hours of one another on Independence Day in 1826.

BASEBALL TEAM STARTS SEASON WITH SUPERB SHUTOUT - East Islip High School’s varsity baseball team began their long-awaited season on May 8 with an impressive 9-0 victory over Half Hollow Hills West at the Moriches Athletic Complex. Senior starting pitcher John Rizzo Jr. set a school record, striking out 20 batters in a complete-game shutout. Rizzo also went 1-for-3 in hitting, driving in three runs. Sophomore Nicholas Rizzo hit a solo home run on the first pitch of his varsity baseball career, Derek Burrell hit a two-run double and Ryan Thompson notched two hits. year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July. Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Organics Today Farm is a small organic farm is East Islip, which grows non GMO organic produce that you can trust. Their farm stand is open to the public every day. They are proud to have made it through the pandemic and continue to serve their community today. “Just a year ago supermarkets were running out of meat, poultry and produce. It’s often said that some of the best ideas are born of necessity and that’s certainly the case with “Camp Color: Summer HumanitiesEnrichment for Middle School Students.” The plan began to gel when teachers Nadine Palumbo and Anthony Vittorino were discussing the detrimental effects of social distancing guidelines, hybrid learning, and a loss of extracurricular activities. “We each witnessed formerly engaged students shutting down and checking out emotionally by turning off their cameras screens and becoming passive,” said Palumbo, adding that “Countless family friends have also addressed concerns about their children’s ‘pandemic slide’ and feelings of depression.” They started testing out different formats, such as a distance-learning talk show to interview artists and authors about their creative process during the pandemic, but that seemed better suited only for high school level remote learning. Palumbo and Vittorino felt the challenges of the past year were particularly harmful to middle school students since, “They will be making a key transition from elementary to secondary school,” said Palumbo, who also serves on the vestry at St. Mark’s as well
