Who is responsible if a teen is injured after sneaking into a closed skateboard park? Can a pet store owner be liable if a child is bitten by a customer’s dog? These cases and other negligence cases were tried by Bay Shore High School students in the High School’s annual Law Day

mock trial competition. Twenty teams of three students each performed their roles as lawyers and witness before attorneys from Bay Shore, Brightwaters and neighboring communities. The attorneys served as judges for the competition and mentors as they gave the students advice on

proper trial techniques, the rules of evidence and how to better frame arguments to become more forceful advocates. For the third year in a row, seniors Gen Bryant, Emily Swain and Sabrina Song earned first place honors. In a very close second place were Katie Barba, Helena Schnorr and

One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I flew onstage mid-song, arms flailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as

we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

Program seeks to leverage Vet-to-Vet relationships to enhance positive change through planned learning, and personal growth experiences including group and/or individual peer engagement. The unique nature of the Joseph P. Dwyer Program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators, which helps provide a comfortable and familiar setting for veterans seeking assistance. As a result of the Program’s successes locally, the Suffolk County model has now been replicated and administered in 16 counties across New York State. The program offers a confidential, one-onone peer approach that has captured national attention, and is being considered as a model to expand across the country. In Congress, Rep. Zeldin recently re-introduced his bill, H.R. 897, to expand nationally the PFC Joseph Dwyer Program. This bipartisan legislation has received support from the entire Long Island Congressional delegation.

For the period of January 2016 through December 2016, there were 323 Dwyer peer group meetings held with a total attendance of 1,211 – averaging four veterans per meeting. The total unduplicated number of veterans that served in peer group meetings last year was 334. On average, there were six weekly meeting sites available for these groups each month, including Amityville, Huntington, Bay Shore, Patchogue, Yaphank, Riverhead, and Sag Harbor. As a result of additional state funding provided and willing community partners, Suffolk County was able to establish several additional bi-weekly and monthly group opportunities. I applaud Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Camp Pa-quatuck for their commitment and dedication to our service men and women in implementing this first rate program.” Since its inception in 2012, over 10,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Program countywide – sharing their experiences with fellow veterans and allowing the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Program to veteran households throughout the County. Those outreach efforts continue as the

Men and women we have never met are our brothers, sisters and family. Families take care of each other and that is precisely what we try to do through the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency and the Joseph Dwyer Program. Veterans working with other veterans to serve and protect one another in the ways that we are uniquely equipped to do. Suffolk’s long tradition of honoring, respecting and serving our veterans was made stronger today through the annual Day of Wellness.” This innovative program provides safe, confidential, supportive, and educational opportunities for veterans who have faced challenges in their postservice transition to meet with other veterans in support of their regaining their personal resilience and direction. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today hosted the fourth annual Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans’ and Family Day of Wellness, which provides a setting for local veterans and their family members dealing with post-service transition issues to participate in wellness related activities. The free event also serves as a chance to provide critical information and awareness about the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer to Peer Program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and other adjustment conditions. The program is named for Private First Class Joseph Dwyer, who was a U.S. Army Combat Medic and Mount Sinai resident that served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. PFC Dwyer received national attention after a photograph surfaced that showed him carrying a wounded Iraqi boy, while his unit was fighting its way to Baghdad. After

On Friday, June 9th, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco, along with school-based Gang Resistance Education and Training Program (G.R.E.A.T.) instructors, participated in a graduation ceremony for 185 fourthgrade students from Brentwood’s Southwest Elementary School. The students participated in the eight week-long program to learn about ways to resist destructive behaviors, such as gang involvement, set goals and take positive actions to achieve them. During the graduation ceremony, Sheriff DeMarco told the students to “Continue to work hard and remember the lessons you learned in class. I

hope to see many of you become Deputy Sheriffs and Correction Officers on day.” The G.R.E.A.T. program, which is currently offered in 8 of the 11 elementary schools throughout the Brentwood School District, and in 30 different schools throughout Suffolk County, is taught by specially trained Correction Officers and Deputy Sheriffs. It is an evidenced-based classroom curriculum designed to prevent youthful crime, violence, drug use, and gang involvement while encouraging positive relationships among law enforcement, children and families. G.R.E.A.T. lessons focus on teaching life-skills to help students

avoid using violence to solve problems, and to aid them in making better choices. In 2006 Sheriff DeMarco had the first Officer trained to teach the G.R.E.A.T. program in Suffolk County. The Sheriff launched the program in January of 2007, and thousands of students have participated in the successful initiative. In addition to elementary schools, the program is offered at middle schools, and is presented at summer camp programs sponsored by local townships and non-profit organizations. Students at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School put their math skills to work to raise $12,040 in the school’s 14th annual Math-A-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During those 14 years, Timber Point’s contributions to St. Jude have reached an impressive

total of $135,600.21. At a May 16th assembly, Principal Danielle Naccarato congratulated the kindergartners, firstgraders and secondgraders on a job well done. They were joined by Superintendent John V. Dolan, who handed out medals to the participants.

“All of the students’ hard work really paid off,” said teacher Michelle Kilkelly. “Our thanks to the Timber Point staff and families for making this another successful year for the Math-A-Thon.”

Special Olympians East Islip entered a team of 19 student-athletes in this year’s Special Olympics Long Island Spring Games South, hosted by Bellport High School on May 7th. Physical education teachers Laura O’Donnell and Diane Wahrenburg became Special Olympics coaches and started a training program at East Islip Middle School last year, entering six middle school student-athletes in the 2016 games. This year, the team more than tripled, growing to include both middle school and high school students, as well as an additional coach, Julie Susskind. After eight weeks of training, the athletes attended a special breakfast, held in honor of the team, on the Friday preceding the event, hosted by the middle school and sponsored by SEPTO. Their families, coaches

and district administrators were on hand to celebrate and congratulate the athletes on their hard work and to wish them luck at the games. The students competed in two events each at the Special Olympics, including the turbo jav throw, softball throw, tennis ball throw, 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash and 100-meter walk. Middle school athletes Anthony Agresta, Madeline Director, Ryan Guerra, Krish Khajuria, Jake Kozak, Janissa Lloyd, Timmy McCall, Julia Modico, Michael Pacheko, Sarah Spruyt and Christopher Urraro took numerous gold, silver and bronze medals and ribbons in their events. High school athletes Delaney Conlan, Danny DiOrio, Jon Michael Jacobs, Emily Maccarone, Robert Phillips, Michael Quagliara, James Stiso

and Kelly Stupplebeen also came home with multiple medals and ribbons. “We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for our Special Olympics athletes to compete,” said Wahrenburg. “I am proud of each and every one of them, and I am grateful to be a part of our team and this organization.” “The kids were excited about competing in the events that they had spent weeks training for,” said O’Donnell, who noted that the coaches look forward to putting together an even bigger team next year. “They were proud of their personal achievements and cheered on their friends. It was a day of victory and pride for everyone involved.” The students were also honored at the district’s June 8th board of education meeting.

Honors for Olympians Prior to the 2017 Special Olympics Spring Games of the South Shore, the Islip School District held a pep rally to honor its participating athletes: Morgan Barry, Conor Brennan, Daniel Burns, Claire Constantino and Donovan Zecchini. All five had trained hard for two months prior, working with coaches Dave Claps and Patty Whitehouse as well as several student mentors. More than 100 people packed the Islip Middle School auditorium for the rally to honor the athletes. The high school and middle school bands played onstage while youth cheerleaders performed, led by high school student Marissa Esposito, and Islip Booster Club President Terry Going presented each athlete with a

certificate of participation. Following the celebration, the attendees moved to the cafeteria for carnival games provided by the high school’s National Honor Society, a photo booth and banner decorating by the middle school’s National Junior Honor Society, frame making by SEPTA, pennant decorating by local Girl Scouts troops and refreshments served by Islip teachers. A bus departed early in the morning of May 7 carrying 40 Islip student volunteers, led by Kerri Schmalaker, to cheer on Islip’s Special Olympians as they competed for medals at the big event, held at Bellport High School. “As our athletes walked in the opening ceremony parade with their nine mentors, you could hear the roar from the Islip

cheering section, all dressed in purple and waving rally towels,” said Superintendent Susan Schnebel. “The smiles on the faces of our athletes were priceless.” Throughout the day, the Islip five competed in several track and field events, including the 50-meter, 100-meter, 800-meter, shot put and 4x100 relay, with their coaches and student mentors at their sides, then stood on the podium with a sense of pride and accomplishment to receive their medals. “The entire Islip community rallied together to make this special event happen, but the real heroes were all the athletes who competed in the Special Olympics,” Schnebel said.

Tennis Star Signs with University Islip High School tennis player Cameron Germano recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play this fall for DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania. Germano was a five-year

member and starter on the varsity tennis team. His athletic accolades include three All-League, two AllDivision, two All-County and 10 Scholar-Athlete nods. He is graduating in the top 5 percent of

his class, and was also awarded the John Veryzer Memorial Scholarship for exemplifying the ideals of good sportsmanship, citizenship and integrity within the realm of athletics.
