Smashed Cars East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club recently held its annual SMASHED program, partnering with Gershow Recycling and JoMacs Towing to get out an important message
to students and the community. Two smashed cars were installed on the school’s front lawn along with a sign display saying, “It’s choice not chance that determines your destiny – don’t text or drink while
driving!” “We are approaching the 100 deadliest days, and it is important for students to know that drinking and driving kills,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo.

Flotteron along with Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented proclamations to scout Michael Anthony Frick in recognition of earning his Eagle Scout – the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting. A member of Troop 151, in Islip, Frick organized his fellow scouts to help with his project at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Oakdale. At the request of the church, he fund raised and organized the construction of a flagpole including landscaping and paving blocks and created a beautiful space for Veterans to come and meditate and reflect.

Ensuring student safety is a top priority, not only in school but also while students travel to and from school. Suffolk Transportation Service (STS) was among a select group of pupil transportation operators in the U.S. chosen by the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to participate in a training program that encourages coordination between school bus operators and other agencies in emergency situations, such as a terrorism incident. Multiple Suffolk County school districts recently joined with local emergency responders, including Suffolk County Police, Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, Bay Shore Fire Department, and New York State Bus Contractor’s Association, at STS’s Saxon Avenue Training Facility to
participate in a unique TSA table top training exercise called EXIS (Exercise Information System). The TSA is an agency of the Federal Department of Homeland Security. “Our top priority as a school bus operator is student safety. Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. is pleased to be selected to spearhead this training program in Suffolk County, which helped all participants enhance their coordination with other agencies to keep students safe,” said John Corrado, President of STS, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. Participating school districts were: Port Jefferson, Bay Shore, Longwood, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Three Village, Central Islip, West Islip, Islip, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Comsewogue, and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. His Service Project was to develop, plan and implement, with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members was the community bulletin board and planter at the Timber Point County East Marina in Great River.
On his “Road to Eagle,” Michaels served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster and Troop Guide – where he has been a role model to his younger scouts in their Rank Advancements.

LIVING BIOGRAPHIES - The 4th grade students in Mrs. Morrison’s class at Gardiner Manor School presented a wax museum on important figures in history. As part of the wax museum project, students chose a historical figure, conducted research, and created posters about their chosen person. Finally, on wax museum day, students dressed up as wax depictions of their figures, who came to life with a push of a “button!” This project integrates social studies, reading, and language arts and is many students’ first exposure to public speaking.
RESEARCHING HISTORY - Students at Bay Shore High School have many opportunities to practice the skills they will need to be successful in college and careers. Students in Mr. Niedzwiecki’s Global History and United States History classes recently completed Social Studies research assignments.

Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean student members celebrated the 12th annual Pond Day experience on May 23rd at the Seatuck Environmental Association’s Scully Estate in Islip. During the event, students assisted Seatuck personnel in the removal of an invasive species of swamp iris originally from Asia. Michaela Fitzsimmons, an eighth-grader at East Islip Middle School, recently won third place and a $100 prize in the 2018 Social Harmony Writing Contest. The goal of the contest, which is sponsored by the Suffolk County AsianAmerican Advisory Board,
Wellbrook Foundation and JEI Learning Center Stonybrook, is to inspire students to think of ideas to promote cultural understanding and social harmony. Participants were asked to write an essay on how to improve the race and ethnic relations in society.

form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are
genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as
who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.
