members – and all Long Islanders with pools on their property – to take the pledge.” The ‘Pool Safely’ Pledge (http://www.poolsafely. gov/pledge/) asks adults to commit to five water safety steps in and around their pools: • Designate a water watcher every single time children in their care are in or near the water • Make sure children in their care know how to swim • Learn CPR • Remove or secure ladders in on ground pools when the pool is not in use • Ensure that all pools have a proper fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate, and safe drain covers Children can also sign an online pledge, in which they agree to never swim alone, and to ask their

parent for swim lessons. The YMCA of Long Island provides over 22,000 swim lessons annually for all ages, starting as young as 6 months, noted Brigis. “Swimming lessons provide children with important, potentially lifesaving skills, to keep them safe in pools, on boats, or at the beaches, and they also offer tremendous benefit by providing regular athletic activity and provide a sense of achievement and confidence,” Brigis added. Meet Your Neighbor! It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.

In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. During the anger management assessment, the agency assesses for signs or symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health disorders, trauma, physical and sexual abuse, legal involvement, domestic violence, substance abuse and dependence issues. New classes for a one-day session begin on June 21st, July 26th and August 23rd. Clients can choose between the one-time eight-hour course or the 12 sessions that meet weekly. In each, clients have an opportunity to identify their triggers, and practice practical, effective strategies for processing and controlling their emotions. Individual anger management sessions are offered in cases where a client is uncomfortable in a group setting. Upon completion of the class and/or course, participants receive a certificate as proof of their progress. “For many clients, anger and the difficulty they experience in dealing with conflict, has threatened their personal and professional relationships.

We want every participant to learn successful coping skills for managing their anger,” explains Anger Management Coordinator Marcie Siciliano, “we provide the education and resources for our clients to deal with stress in healthy ways.” The fees associated with the Anger Management services are minimal and competitive. It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn. They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck. She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck. She hurries to another pile and opens the next box. A blond curl tied with ribbon - it’s the second baby’s locks. Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her ‘a buck.’ And now she feels as though she’s been truly struck.

She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. Some things made her feel good; others made her sad. Town of Islip Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr., recently announced a comprehensive alternative recreation plan for Brentwood residents, in light of the ongoing investigation at Roberto Clemente Park, which remains closed. This plan provides Brentwood residents with a variety of summer recreation options at discounted rates. “This Town Board remains committed to returning Roberto Clemente Park to the people of Brentwood, in a safe and responsible manner. We continue to work in conjunction with the Suffolk County DA, the New York State and Suffolk County Departments of Health, and the New York State Department of Environmental

Control, in formulating a remediation plan that addresses all issues at the park. However, equally important to this board has been the need to provide the Brentwood community with meaningful recreational opportunities as summer approaches. We have worked diligently with Town employees and the Brentwood School District in devising a plan that offers residents of all ages the fun and safe summer activities that they rightfully deserve,” said Councilman Senft. Business Competition Recently, over 240 students from 19 Long Island school districts competed in the annual Long Island Business Teachers Association competition at Commack High School. Nine dedicated Bay Shore students took part in course competitions, including: Accounting, Business Communications, Sports Marketing,

Keyboarding, Computer Applications, Career & Financial Management and Web Design. The Bay Shore High School Business Department is proud to announce that Kori Barriteau and Lucas Martinelli won 2nd place in the Web Design competition. This marks the 4th consecutive year that Bay Shore has placed in the

top three for Web Design. In addition, Nicholas Mamatos earned 5th place in Computer Applications, the second year he has placed at this event. All students who participated in the competition are enrolled in the array of business classes currently offered by the Career & Technical Education Department at Bay Shore High School.

Dellacave Award Winners

On June 8th, the 14th annual Butch Dellacave Award Ceremony was held at West Lake Inn in Patchogue. Over 500 people attended the event, including 124 student athletes and their families, friends and Athletic Directors. The Butch Dellacave Foundation, in

conjunction with Newsday and the Economic Council of Suffolk, recognizes one outstanding Senior male and Senior female studentathlete from each Suffolk County School District. This year, Carly Cox and Ryan Mazzie were selected to represent Bay Shore. Ryan Mazzie was also selected as the winner of

the 2014 Dellacave Most Outstanding Male Student Athlete in Suffolk County, garnering him a trophy and $1,000 scholarship! Ryan is Bay Shore’s 4th winner of the County Award in the last 5 years, joining previous winners Alyssa Leonard (‘10), Griffin Rock (‘12) and Courtney Syrett (‘13).

Study Abroad Dina Palazzolo of East Islip, N.Y., was one of 16 students from Susquehanna University who recently spent two weeks studying the music, architecture, art and cuisine of northern Italy as part of the university’s Global Opportunities (GO) program. Participating students

lived with host families while attending music lessons and rehearsals at the Scuola Comunale di Musica a “G. Sarti” in Faenza, and cooking Italian cuisine alongside a local chef. The group toured architectural treasures of the Byzantine Empire, explored towns in Tuscany and Emilia-Romangna,

visited religious centers and attended cultural events. Palazzolo is studying earth and environmental science at Susquehanna, where she will be a senior in the fall. She is a 2011 graduate of East Islip High School and the daughter of Carl and Susan Palazzolo.

Gia Gremaux, a sixthgrader at East Islip Middle School, won first place in the annual AMVETS National Americanism Essay Contest. This year’s theme was “What The American Flag Means To Me.” In Gremaux’s essay, she honored her uncle and grandfather, who both served in the U.S. military. “When Gia showed her grandfather the essay, he was so touched that he cried,” said her ELA teacher, Jennifer Esposito,

Book Fest Honoree

The Tiny Tomato and His Terrific Manners was recently honored at The 2014 New York Book Festival. The book is credited to the students at JFK Elementary School in East Islip, who participated in a contest hosted by local author Barbara Prignano. The winner and runners

up offered a collaboration of ideas that inspired Ms. Prignano to write this imaginative and educational book about anti bullying and proper manners. The New York Book Festival honors books that deserve greater attention from the world’s publishing community. “This was a

This spring, fifth-grade students in Kathy Carter’s music classes at Timber Point Elementary School used Lynne Cherry’s story of “The Great Kapok Tree” to teach life lessons to the school’s younger students. Using the Common Core rain forest modules, the students incorporated science, ecology, geography, social studies, art, music, composition and literature to present a readers’ theater-style script-reading presentation of the story for the younger classes. Under Carter’s guidance, the fifth-graders explored environmental issues while composing original music, creating a rain forest “cacophony” using authentic indigenous instruments found in South America. “The emphasis of the presentation was on the sounds of the animals, insects and rain from the forest, forming a ‘sound symphony,’” said Carter.

They also wrote lyrics for an original studentcomposed song about saving the kapok tree. To recreate the atmosphere of the Amazon rain forest, the students embarked on a take-home project to create original masks representing their characters. Lastly, they painted a replica of the kapok tree under the direction of Timber Point art teacher Christina Spera-Bartlett, who also assisted the students in decorating the stage’s proscenium with foliage and animals created in her art classes. “They really used their imagination to bring the rain forest alive,” said Carter. The younger students, who also have studied the rain forest in their respective classes, were enthralled with the presentation, and many commented on how much they loved the rain forest music, how realistic the

masks looked and how it influenced their awareness of conservation.“The presentation was a great way to influence our young students to help preserve the environment,” said fifth-grader Maddie Burhart. Her classmate Olivia Pause added, “It helped inspire students to work together toward a common goal.” “This ‘Great Kapok Tree’ project empowered our students to explore their creativity through different art forms – whether it was singing, composing, writing lyrics, playing the instruments, acting, painting or researching the environment of the rain forest,” said Carter. “The students did a wonderful job, and they were tremendously enthusiastic throughout the entire project.” Photo by: East Islip School District

COUNTY CHAMPION - East Islip High School athlete Faith Penny won the county championship in the high jump for the second consecutive year, qualifying her to represent East Islip in the New York State track and field championships during the weekend of June 6th. Ten artists from East Islip High School were featured in LIU Post’s 11th annual 12x12 High School Art Exhibition during May. The students, as well as fellow young artists from 28 other Long Island high schools, were selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition, and attended a special closing reception on May 22nd at Post’s Hillwood Student Art League Gallery. The exhibition was open to 12x12 two-dimensional media, 12x12x12 threedimensional media and videos of no more than 144 seconds, and included

awards in such categories as oil pastel, acrylic/ oil, watercolor, colored pencil, graphite, digital illustration, mixed media, sculpture, video and photography. “The artwork displayed represents visual expressions with dynamic connections to artistic mediums, and impactful personal content,” said exhibition coordinator Elizabeth Hinkson.
