Exploring Engineering In an engaging and exploratory engineering workshop presented by the Maritime Museum’s Melora Lane, students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School designed racecars using recycled materials and math and physics concepts. The “Let’s Get Rolling” event, part of the Maritime Explorium program,

began with a presentation by Lane on how people in Senegal reuse scrap market materials. The students then began a design process, keeping the environmental impact of materials in mind, and created their own racecars with the recycled materials. They also built a ramp to test the cars, designed experiments,

I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

Mastery of musicianship was on display at East Islip’s spring concert series, showcasing a year of study and growth under the tutelage of the music program’s acclaimed educators. Young musicians from four district schools performed at six stellar concerts – May 9th and 16th for East Islip High School, May 4th and 5th for East Islip Middle School, and May 11th and 18th for John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools, respectively – held at the high school’s Rydzeski Hall to the delight of family, friends and faculty. The pieces performed displayed

a wide stretch of musical history and challenging arrangements, from classical to traditional songs to Broadway favorites. “I am very proud of the outstanding performances of all the students this spring,” said East Islip Middle School Orchestra Director Judith Fischer, assessing her school’s concerts. “Their attention to details and the ability to portray stories through the musical lines and harmonies are advanced techniques for middle school students. Congratulations on music well learned and performed!” Angela Stewart, RCK’s

orchestra director, said, “I am extremely proud of all of my orchestra students who gave such a beautiful concert performance. I thank them for practicing and learning all of their music so well.” “We are so very proud of our music students and their performances,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art and music. “It is through the guidance of our teachers and support from our parents that our children flourish musically. Our spring concert series reflected the essence of our wonderful music program and department, and each concert was a huge success.”

Islip Middle School sixthgraders in the district’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted visited the acclaimed 41 Cooper Square academic center at Cooper Union’s New York City campus on May 20th, where they attended a STEM workshop and talked with Cooper Union engineering professor George Delegrammatikas. Designed by Morphosis architect Thom Mayne to green specifications nd opened in 2009, 41 Cooper Square houses the Albert Nerken School of Engineering, the Frederick P. Rose Auditorium, the

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Louis and Jeannette Brooks Computer Center, the Herb Lubalin Study Center, the Saturday Outreach Program, and other laboratories, classrooms, studios, and retail spaces. In 2010, it was the first academic building in Manhattan to be awarded the LEED Platinum rating for reducing energy use and enhancing the environment. Islip’s EXCEL students and program coordinator Julia Johnson have been visiting Cooper Union for many years, but this was

the first trip for Assistant Principal James Cameron, who didn’t hesitate to join students in their hands-on STEM challenge, working with circuitry. “Visiting with the Cooper Union students and faculty was a great opportunity for our students to see the resources that the world and New York City have to offer,” said Cameron. “Professor Delegrammatikas’ message to the students was to continuously seek and solve the world’s problems by thinking and acting locally.”

Priceless Six Six standout career development students earned medals and gained priceless experiences as part of East Islip’s first-ever Special Olympics team this spring. Earlier this year, East Islip Middle School physical education teachers Laura O’Donnell and Diane Wahrenburg became certified Special Olympics coaches. They soon recruited a six-member team at the middle school, began training and entered East Islip’s first team into the Special Olympics Long Island Spring Games South, hosted by Bellport High School on May 22nd. “The Special Olympics gives our athletes an opportunity to shine as individuals and be a part of a team,” said Wahrenburg. The event kicked off on May 20th with a breakfast

sponsored by the middle school’s Leaders Club, celebrating the student athletes. In attendance were the athletes and their families, the coaches, Leaders Club officers, Principal Mark Bernard, assistant principals Christian Seifert and Jason Stanton, Director of Special Education Lisa Belz and Susan Kosser, the assistant to the superintendent for student support services. At the competition, the six athletes competed in two events each, and each athlete earned two medals. Anthony Gallino went home with two gold medals for the 50-meter race and the softball throw, Ryan Guerra took silver in both the 100-meter walk and softball throw, Krish Kajuria walked his way to gold in the 100-meter race walk and placed fourth in

Second in Division the softball throw, Emily Maccarone came home with gold medals in the softball and mini javelin throw, Sarah Spruyt took bronze medals in both the 50-meter race and the softball throw, and Christopher Urraro took the silver in the 50-meter race and gold in the softball throw. “It was an incredible experience,” said O’Donnell. “Training for the events, getting to know the students on a more personal level, and being there with them and their families to celebrate their achievements at the Special Olympics was a very rewarding experience. I am looking forward to next year and expanding the program in the years to come.”

At Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School (SSCM), there was much celebration among Girls’ Volleyball teams, as the Gold and Blue Squads enjoyed some end of season cheer. The Catholic Middle School Athletic Association’s (CMSAA) provides a structure for interscholastic athletic competition among middle schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, offering a variety of sports each season, ranging from Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Soccer to Volleyball, Lacrosse, Bowling, and Cross Country Track. Troy, who led two SSCM teams, the more veteran Gold Squad of mainly 8th graders with a handful of 7th graders and the newly formed Blue Squad, consisting of energetic 6th and 7th graders. The Blue Squad held their own nicely, placing 5th in the Angels Division. Meanwhile, the Gold Squad came crashing out of the gate from the very first matchup, sweeping the first three games against St. Patrick’s and keeping that momentum going throughout the season, for a final ranking of 2nd place in the Diocese. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over six years and this year’s Volleyball Team includes 16 girls from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, whose

practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island locations. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s volunteer coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players. Congratulations to all of SSCM’s Volleyball players and a tremendous thanks to Mr. Peterson and Mrs. Troy for their hard work and dedication.
