It is vitally important that we renew our vows to serve this community through continued education of our own employees, while spreading community awareness that this population deserves the highest quality of care that we can offer. “We served, our families served, and it’s a privilege to continue to support our nation’s heroes...not just on Memorial Day, but every day of the year.” As part of that ongoing pledge, for the eighth consecutive year, Mr. Dowling presented five veterans with checks representing the difference between their military pay and the regular salaries they would have received had they not taken military leave from their jobs at Northwell Health. They were: *Katrina Aronoff, chief radiation therapist at Phelps Hospital who served in the U.S. Coast Guard for five years and holds the rank of third-class petty officer and boat swain mate. *Ming Chan, a security officer at Long Island Jewish Medical Center who served as a mechanic in the U.S. Army for five years. *Davon Gass, a patient

care associate at Lenox Hill Hospital who served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy for six years. *Kelly Mahafly, an operating room nurse at Glen Cove Hospital who had the same role in the U.S. Army for six years. *Joseph Altidor, a food service worker at North Shore University Hospital who served in the Marine Corps for eight years, including a tour in Kuwait as a sergeant. The initiative recognizes the financial sacrifice veterans and their families make and helps returning veterans reintegrate to civilian life. Since 2008, 37 employees have received more than $1.6 million through the health system’s supplemental pay benefit. Mr. Dowling acknowledged the hard work and sacrifices made by our military personnel and their loved ones. “I don’t think we do enough for veterans,” he said. “And, I don’t think we appreciate their sacrifices enough. The Greatest Honor “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

Amidst the pomp and circumstance of a full color guard, Northwell Health’s leadership gathered with veterans and high-ranking military officials to honor members of the military, recognize their sacrifice and hear from former Army Undersecretary Patrick Murphy. The event took place at Aspire One World Trade Center on Thursday, May 24th. Since the event took place during Fleet Week, Northwell President and CEO Michael Dowling made sure to recognize “all Marines, sailors and Coast Guard service members” who performed naval service, as well as saluting “all of our soldiers and airmen.” Northwell Health has worked to address the issues facing returning veterans and their families for more than a decade, serving as both a treatment provider for veterans and their families, and as a major employer of veterans that values the skills they bring to their jobs. Juan Serrano, director of Northwell’s Office of Military and Veterans’ Liaison Services and a fellow veteran of foreign conflict, spoke to the importance of providing tangible commitments to those who serve. “Recently, we celebrated the ten-year anniversary of our Military and Veterans Liaison Services unit. In anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states, Heft personally designed and sewed a 50 star flag as part of a H.S. history project. His teacher gave him a B- on his project. Heft went on to send his flag to his Ohio Congressman, Walter Moeller, for consideration of becoming the new United States National Flag. It is said that President Dwight D. Eisenhower personally called Heft to inform him that he had chosen his flag design over 1,500 other applicants to be the new U.S. Flag! As part of Fleet Week NYC, East Islip’s high school and middle school once again welcomed U.S. Marine Corps Aviation to the district. Two Marine helicopters from New River, North Carolina filled the sky on May 24th and landed with great fanfare on the middle school field, providing fascinated

massive CH-53E Super Stallion out of HMH-366, holding approximately eight Marines and two Corps photographers. Both of these helicopters are exclusive to the Marine Corps, specifically constructed for the organization’s needs. Helicopter landings are performed yearly as part of Fleet Week for community outreach. “This was a wonderful way to thank our military men and women and to honor all of our military branches as we prepared for Memorial Day,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the district’s director of careers and student services, who helped to arrange the visit with Marine Corps Recruiting Station New York and Staff Sgt. Jason Rodriguez from Marine Corps Recruiting Sub Station Smithtown. “It was a beautiful day, and we are very grateful to our Marines for their service. It gives me great joy to present these types of events that showcase our Marines and the hard work they do every day to protect our country and our freedom.”

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know

is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this non-profit. They truly believe mental health is as important as physical health. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. All who attend will receive breakfast and the chance to win prizes throughout the day. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walk-ins, it is $5 and for children under 12, it is free. Taking the Titles Islip High School’s boys varsity lacrosse team has won its first-ever county and Long Island titles, and will challenge Pelham High School on June 6th in Albany in the state semifinals. At the exciting Long Island Class C championship game, held on June 2nd at Shuart

Stadium at Hofstra University, a goal by senior Jeff Atlas with 7.4 seconds to go earned the Buccaneers the 8-7 victory over Cold Spring Harbor. Also scoring for Islip were Mike Bienkowski, Chris Giuliani, Joe Juengerkes, Bailey Kolovich and Jack Lizzul. Guided by coach Keith

Scheidel, second-seeded Islip beat Bayport-Blue Point by 10-7 in the May 23rd county semifinal, paced by four goals and an assist from Juengerkes. On May 28th, the Bucs won the county championship with a 6-5 victory over topseeded Mount Sinai.

Valedictorians Honored

Bossert, SCSSA presidentelect and Elwood School District superintendent of schools, and Roger Tilles, New York State Education Department Board of Regents member. During her keynote address, New York State Commissioner of Education and University of the State of New York President MaryEllen Elia encouraged the valedictorians to ask questions about what it took to get here today and how they can, in turn, support and champion public education tomorrow. “We all benefit from public education, which needs to be supported,” Elia said. “You can give back to support the work that was given to you.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition.

During their individual acknowledgements, the universities they plan to attend and their intended majors were announced. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Boston College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Purdue University, Stony Brook University, Tufts University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate sponsors also awarded 12 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. In his closing remarks, Dr. Bossert thanked the valedictorians for giving school district administrators and parents a reason to be proud. “It’s the work you do that makes the work we do rewarding,” he told the students.

Accomplishments Acknowledged The Northport-East Northport School District recognized a number of exceptional students at the most recent Board of Education meeting on May 31st. Northport High School senior Shannon Culhane was named Art Student of the Month and was recognized for her outstanding work in the art department. During the past three years, Shannon has received multiple Scholastic Gold Key Awards, was named the 2018 Scholar Artist, and awarded Achievement in Drawing at Long Island’s Best: Young Artist Show. In addition, Shannon was also recently named a recipient of the Otto Kahn Visual Arts Scholarship. Her teachers commended her for her hard work and dedication to the arts, and her unwavering attention to honing her artistic

skills. Shannon will be continuing her artistic career at FIT as a Fashion Design major in the fall. Ryan Dee, a senior at Northport High School, was recognized as the 2018 Music Student of the Month. Throughout his academic career, Ryan has sought to understand music at a deeper level, and has received multiple awards for his skills in music theory, including Comprehensive Music Student of the Year and AP Music Theory Student of the Year. In addition, he has been recognized for the past two years as an AllState Symphony Orchestra member, and was selected as one of 11 winners of NYSSMA’s Electronic Music Showcase in 2016. He was commended by his instructors for his intuitive understanding of music, and the humility and integrity he regularly

shows in the classroom. Ryan will be continuing his studies at Syracuse University as a Music and Entertainment Industry major in the fall. In addition to these two outstanding students, a large group of accomplished students were recognized for recent accomplishments in the study of mathematics. Recognitions included those who received medals in the Long Island Math Fair, American Mathematics Competitions/American Invitational Mathematics Examination winners, Suffolk County Math Tournaments, and others. Design Winner Islip High School student Rebecca Angelou, who is enrolled in the art, design and visual communications program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, received a gold medal for her firstplace win in the New York State SkillsUSA advertising design competition, held recently in Syracuse. The competition

consisted of a written exam, assessing general knowledge of advertising design, and a skills performance portion. Participants had to design an existing advertisement and develop a new creative design. To win, Angelou was required to demonstrate her mechanical skills on the computer, understanding of advertising design industry terminology and

concepts, and demonstrate a professional presentation and technical execution of the comprehension within a specified amount of time. Angelou will be attending the SkillsUSA National Skills & Leadership Conference in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of June, competing against students from across the United States.

Successful Showcase In a massive celebration of all things science and technology, the East Islip School District recently hosted its first STEM Night, welcoming more than 200 guests to the East Islip High School to see students from all of the district’s schools promote their work and organizations, including the high school’s and East Islip Middle School’s robotics and STEM Club students, the East Islip National Honor Society, and John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools’ fourth-grade science fair winners, and other fifthgrade elementary STEM students. Students enrolled in the high school’s Medical & Health Technology Career Academy, AP Capstone program and other scientific research classes showcased the projects they have been working on

all year. Representing East Islip’s K-5 STEM program that began this year, students demonstrated how to build bridges and create towers and skyscrapers with the use of wooden blocks. The high school’s robotics team members were on hand to show off their newly designed 3D chassis robotic bodies that were created and designed in CAD classes and developed on the 3D printer. Visiting students from all grades were allowed to play with the new robots and learn how to operate them. Ken White, the operational director of educational management at Brookhaven National Laboratory, served as the keynote speaker. A d d i t i o n a l l y, representatives from the East Islip Public Library manned a booth to showcase 3D printing and

virtual reality technologies. Students were able to put on the library’s new 3D video viewfinders to virtually visit different places in the world. “This event was a huge success and the parents and students had a great time learning about STEM and how it will help their children to be successful in their future careers,” said Israel Malinowitzer, East Islip’s technology director, who coordinated the event with Math and Science Director Janet Jones. “We weren’t really sure if we would have any visitors at our table, but were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and interest the young people had,” said Jason Terhune of the East Islip Public Library’s computer services department. “We appreciated the opportunity to showcase our public library to the community.”

21 Years of Giving At the For the Kids Foundation’s 21st annual Black Tie Gala, East Islip administrator Dr. Lisa Belz was honored as Educator Advocate of the Year, and Mary Finn, Cathy Lemon and Suzanne Zembrzycki were honored as Community Advocates of the Year. This year’s recent “The Castle on the Green”themed Gala saw a return to Land’s End in Sayville. It is the FTK organization’s primary fundraising event to benefit East Islip students and has donated well over $1 million for educational programs since its formation. Belz earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Dowling College, then obtained a master’s degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University and a professional diploma in school leadership from Dowling. In 2008, she earned a doctorate in education from St. John’s University. She began her educational career as a teacher, spending 14 years in the classroom in the South Country and Brentwood School Districts before being named assistant principal for William Floyd Elementary School in 2002. She joined East Islip two years later as principal of the Early Childhood Center, Connetquot Elementary School and

eventually Timber Point Elementary School, which earned a National Blue Ribbon School award during her tenure. In 2014, she became the district’s executive director of special education/pupil personnel services 6-12. She has also served as the vice president, president and current co-president of the East Islip Association of School Administrators; and for a three-year term as a Board of Education trustee for the BayportBlue Point School District. Belz and her husband Rob have three sons, Austin, Zachary and Dylan. Finn, FTK’s treasurer, was born in Bay Shore and graduated from Brentwood High School. After earning master’s degrees from Hofstra University in audiology and speechlanguage pathology, she embarked on a career as an audiologist and cochlear implant specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital. She currently holds a private audiology practice and teaches the field as a professor at Hofstra. Finn has volunteered with FTK for 13 years, including stints as John F. Kennedy Elementary School representative and FTK Carnival chair, and served as recording secretary for East Islip’s PTA Council. She and her husband Bobby have two children, Jillian (a 2017 East Islip

graduate) and East Islip Middle School eighthgrader Bobby. Lemon, who was unable to attend the Gala, is a member of the FTK Board of Directors and longtime advocate for volunteer work since her days growing up in Hawaii. She owns the local business Tire Express with husband Robert Lemon, with whom she has three children, Gabrielle, Bobby and Olivia. Lemon also donates her efforts to the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition and Poppy’s Angels. Zembrzycki, a West Islip native and Farmingdale College alumna, operates Yellow Dog Lawn Care with her husband Jim. She has resided in East Islip for 19 years and has a long history of community service. Zembrzycki has been a member of FTK’s Board of Directors since 2011 and serves as its secretary. Treblemakers Say YES Led by director Mike Baur, the TrebleMakers chorus group from Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School attended the opening day celebration of the League of YES on May 5th, performing “The StarSpangled Banner.” The League of YES, founded in 2010 as The Miracle League of Long Island, is a non-competitive baseball league for children with special abilities; each

player gets up to bat and scores a home run. The focus is on participation and fun. After the anthem, many of the young singers then stayed to be “buddies” for the League’s special needs athletes, protecting the players from flying balls, assisting them at bat and with getting around the bases after they hit their home run and joining them on the field to help them field the opposite

team’s hits. “I am so humbled to be able to work with such talented singers, but what impresses me more than anything they do with music is the quality of their character,” said Baur. “To see them interact with children that they do not even know and that have disabilities, and to be their buddy for a day, tells me so much about their character.”

The Gardiner Manor School Fifth Grade Choir traveled by bus to sing at two different Senior Centers in the Town of Islip. Several dozen senior citizens turned out to attend the performances. The first stop was the

Caesar Trunzo Senior Center in Brentwood, followed shortly by a visit to the West Islip Senior Citizen Center. Led and accompanied by Mr. Kant, the youngsters previewed songs from their upcoming Spring Concert, including

the Swedish-language “Vem Kan Segla” and the intricately choreographed “Steppin’ Out With My Baby.” Afterwards the students chatted with their fellow town residents, who were delighted by the singing.

CELEBRATING CULTURE - Recently, the Bay Shore Dual Language Parent Faculty Association (PFA) hosted many Dual Language families from Brook Avenue School and Gardiner Manor School for a beautiful feast filled with many favorite traditional foods. The dance troope “El Teatro Rodante Hispanico” performed several traditional Spanish dances for the families.

SAFETY LESSON - Bay Shore High School’s driver education program teaches students to be safe drivers. Recently, the program partnered with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department to provide a lesson about impaired driving. The “2018 Boxer Announcement Reception” will be held on Tuesday, June 26th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage, 99 Quaker Meeting House Road, Farmingdale. Since 2003, when Fight for Charity was founded, it has supported Long Island charities including Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School and the National Foundation for Human Potential and more than 30 others. Over $1.1 million in funds have been raised and donated directly to assist individuals in need and to support charities that serve individuals with special needs. Volunteer boxers represent local businesses representing all walks of life. The 2018 boxers have obtained medical clearance and have made a commitment to train, attend organization events and raise funds for Long Island charities. “The men and women who volunteer to be boxers are to be commended for their willingness to train hard and get in the ring

Teacher Appreciation In an effort to highlight educators who make a positive impact on their students, colleagues and community, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently hosted his fourth annual Teacher Appreciation Awards Night. Every day in schools across Suffolk County, teachers touch the lives of thousands of children. However, a teacher’s work and impact reach far beyond the walls of the classroom. From grading papers and preparing special activities, to meeting with parents and running after-school clubs, teachers spend countless hours outside of class ensuring their students’ success. exceptional teachers should be recognized and encouraged, so near the end of every school year his office reaches out to schools in the 15th legislative district in search of these extraordinary educators. Administrators, faculty and staff are invited to nominate a colleague in their school district who they feel goes above and beyond what is required, is an inspiration to his/ her peers, collaborates with colleagues to improve student achievement, inspires student lifelong learning, or is a master teacher and educational leader. Honor Flight Applications Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that Honor Flight Long Island is currently accepting World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran applications for a free flight with peers to Washington, D.C. to tour of military memorials. “Created to honor war veterans and thank them for their sacrifices, Honor Flights fly military veterans to our nation’s capital for a VIP tour which often includes the World War II Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam War memorials, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Honor Flight is an exceptional organization that provides and amazing service to our veterans, as these trips allow us to honor America’s veterans for their service and

sacrifice, and for all they did to help preserve our freedom and democracy.” Long Island Honor Flight, a nonprofit group, is part of the national Honor Flight network and organizes, hosts, and pays for the trips, which depart from Long Island MacArthur airport. Flights are scheduled in the spring and the fall, and as part of the day’s itinerary, veterans and ‘guardians’ (volunteers who help make these trips possible) fly in to Baltimore Washington International Airport, where a waiting motor coach takes them on the 50-minute drive to Washington DC and the WWII and Korean Memorials, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, and visits to the Navy Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, or other area high-points. “This mission flies our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect together at our national memorials,”

said Councilman Hand. “If you or any eligible veteran you know has interest in participating in an Honor Flight, I urge you to take on this wonderful and charitable opportunity.” Each trip includes about 50 veterans, who are taken for free. They are accompanied by about 50 volunteers, who each pay $400. The volunteers assist those in wheelchairs or who use walkers and provide whatever help is needed along the way. Honor Flight trips are provided for veterans who have not already visited the memorials in Washington D.C.
