tudents in Emily Gerde’s seventh-grade Italian and Spanish classes at East Islip Middle School walked down a “red carpet” in the decorated Professional Development Center on May 8th. The fashion show was part of the classes’ clothing unit, in which students worked in pairs for two class periods answering questions in the target language. Their assignment was to determine the exact outfits and accessories they would be wearing.

My thanks to the parents and children for a great year.” Directed by Ronald Fox, the school’s band ended the concert with four rousing numbers: Robert W. Smith’s “Apollo Fanfare”; “The Raiders March” by John Williams, reflecting its origin as the Indiana Jones theme; Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth’s “Rolling in the Deep”; and the Michael Story arrangement of “Patriotic Bits & Pieces.” “The spring concert was a huge success,” said O’Rourke. “All of the students’ hard work truly paid off.”

Bay Shore High School Librarian, Mrs. Amy Jo Southworth, was recently named 2013’s recipient of the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Frances Henne Award. Established in 1986, the $1,250 award, sponsored by ABC-CLIO, recognizes a school librarian with experience totaling five years or less who demonstrates leadership qualities with students, teachers and administrators.
Mrs. Southworth has also been awarded the Bound to Stay Bound conference grant for $750, enabling her to attend the AASL National Conference, where she will be presenting a session entitled Launching A Common Core Conversion. Lastly, Mrs. Southworth had her article, Poised To Partner: The 21st Century School Librarian, published in the May issue of English Journal, and was quoted in T.H.E. Journal

East Islip High School student Nicole Caico, acclaimed for her cartoons and photography, was recently accepted to the Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalists at Stony Brook University. The junior will hone her skills at news reporting, writing and editing during the weeklong residential summer workshop while working in the
School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom and absorbing classes covering everything from broadcasting and website construction to blogging and photojournalism. She is considering the latter as a potential future career. Caico is one of only 18 students on Long Island accepted to this prestigious program, which takes place in July. According to Joan Dlouhy, the adviser to the
school newspaper, Caico is only the fourth student in East Islip history to attend the Green Summer Institute. The program is named for the late Robert W. Greene, a Pulitzer Prizewinning investigative reporter and editor whose dream was to start a “boot camp” for high school journalists at Stony Brook University.

Marching Band Honored
The Central Islip Senior High School Marching Band was the only band from the State of New York to march during the 2013 National Memorial Day Parade. The National Memorial Day Parade is presented by the American Veterans Center. During the parade, thousands of patriotic Americans come together and honor those who have sacrificed so much in service to our

Pen Pals Meet For the past 12 years, second-graders in Patti Austin’s class at the Commack Road Elementary School in Islip have corresponded through the use of the written word with Rosemary Ulrich’s second-grade class from Arrowhead Elementary School in the Three Village School District. Paired with their pen pals in the beginning of the year, the students exchange letters every two months, where they discuss what they’re learning in class, their favorite activities and the different books they’re reading. “The kids really love it,” said Mrs. Ulrich. “When the first letters come in, the kids are always excited to find out what they have in common with their pen pals.” Added Mrs. Austin, “I think it is great for the kids to understand the joy of receiving a handwritten letter. Everything now
is instant, and the anticipation of what they’re going to read and learn about their pen pals is exciting.” To culminate the yearlong pen pal program, the Arrowhead students traveled to CRES to enjoy the day with their new friends. During the visit, the students enjoyed a picnic, played on the playground, participated in a buddy read and taught one another math strategy games. For Mrs. Austin’s class, this was the first of their pen pal visits, as they also participated in a yearlong pen pal program with the second-graders in Mary Bauernfeind’s class at Maud S. As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. For the first time, I will have the pleasure of viewing the entire three-hour extravaganza from the comfort of my very own auditorium seat. Sure beats racing back and forth between numbers and quick changes to stand – more like hover – near the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of three minutes or so... and then hightailing it backstage in time to line up for my own dance! But seating arrangements aside, there will of course
be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

On May 22nd, the Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards dinner was held at the ballroom of Hofstra’s Student Center. More than 350 students, faculty and family members attended the gala. After a buffet dinner, more than 120 awards were handed out to student journalists from districts across Long Island. Bay Shore’s High School newspaper, The Maroon Echo, was again the big winner at the event, walking away with thirty-nine awards. In the final tally,
the perennially awardwinning paper garnered six Honorable Mentions, eight 3rd Place awards, seven 2nd Place awards and sixteen 1st place awards. Bay Shore Senior Brianne Garrett took First Place as Student Journalist of the Year and Sophomore Julia Hutchinson was honored with First Place for the Aura Diaz First Person Award. The Maroon Echo was also awarded Best Sports Section and swept both the First Person and Sports Feature categories.
To round out the amazing evening, The Maroon Echo won the Hofstra University Newspaper of the Year Award and Advisor of the Year honors went for the 5th year in a row to the ever-dedicated Mr. Walter Fishon. Congratulations to Mr. Fishon and the entire student staff of The Maroon Echo for the amazing work they do each year. The event was a spectacular evening for all who attended.

What Is Crew? in boats dubbed “Shells,” can either be solo or in groups of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. A few weekends ago, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and, ultimately, win the race. He is truly the core of a first-class boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger
boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than 6 minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless.

“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th
issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.
