The Best & The Brightest By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

Youth In Gov’t Day

Six student officers from East Islip Middle School’s student government and their club adviser Dawn Zeffiro attended the Town of Islip’s 35th Annual Youth In Government Day on May 22nd, sponsored by the Islip Elks Lodge. The middle schoolers began the day at Town Hall, where they met students

and advisers from other townwide schools and Elks members. They also met with Councilman John C. Cochrane Jr., who spoke to the students about town government activities, projects and goals. Next, the students toured the town’s waste-to-energy and fire-rescue facilities at Long Island MacArthur

Career Academy Visit

New York State Board of Regents member Roger Tilles visited East Islip High School on May 13th as part of a special showcase of the school’s Career Academy program. Held in the school’s library, the event allowed Tilles to meet Career Academy students and teachers and to explore 30 project boards created by the Academy students. Each board was part of a booth manned by four students from each of three current Career Academies – Environment Green, International Business Globalization, and Medical and Health Technology – highlighting the many different events, competitions and projects they had participated in this year. The event included a video presentation, speeches from students and administrators, and a performance by the school’s chorus.

Tilles, of Great Neck, represents Long Island on the Board of Regents. He was elected in 2005 to a five-year term as a regent, and reelected to a second term in 2010. The accomplished educator and business leader has also served as director of Tilles Investment Companies; founder of the Long Island Arts Alliance; executive vice chairman of the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts; chairman and founding member of the Association for a Better Long Island; acting chairman of the Long Island Regional Planning Board; chairman of the Long Island University Board of Trustees; and member of the New York, Michigan and Washington, D.C. Summer Enrichment Series The Town of Islip Youth Bureau’s community agency, Youth Enrichment Services (YES), provides structured, quality Summer Enrichment Programs and a wide variety of youth development and delinquency prevention programming such as: Work Readiness Skills, After-School Programs, Youth & Family Counseling, Leadership & Community Service Opportunities, Violence/Gang/Bullying Prevention, Tutoring & Homework Help, Leisure Time Activities, Cultural Arts and Anti-Bias Programming. These programs are safe and fun for youth and a wonderful resource for parents. Through providing programs that are proven to be effective, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau enables Islip’s youth to be better prepared for responsible citizenship and to realize their personal potential. Half Day and Full Day Summer sessions are available for youth in grades K-6. Program sites include; the West Islip Community Center on Higbie Lane and the Brentwood West Middle School on Udall Road in Bay Shore. Other locations are being considered, as well.

These youth programs will incorporate fun AND learning; featuring academic enrichment, physical fitness, art & music education, cultural exposure, leisure time, field trips, theater & drama, self-esteem and character building activities and much more! A separate field trip- based program called “Summer Fun” will be available for youth in grades 7-9. This program will feature high interest activities and excursions including; bowling, ice skating, roller skating, walking clubs, parks, health & wellness, art & music, cultural exposure and programs aimed to meet the particular needs and interest of adolescents. Quality, research-based Summer Enrichment Programs, like those provided by YES, show documented gains in academic learning and growth in students’ social skills. Don’t have your child experience a loss of academic growth over the summer or “backtrack” and start the new school year at a disadvantage. Islip Youth Bureau’s Summer Enrichment Programs emphasize both academic and social components which are documented

to improve school year attendance & achievement, increase feelings of belonging and reduce participation in risky behavior. These positive outcomes are directly linked with summer enrichment programs which focus on prevention and development, as well as fun. Newly acquired academic skills and increased confidence can translate into better grades and lead to new academic and personal interests for your child. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s diagnosis and any hearing

This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with

in the realm of high school crew. With any luck, some of our boats can bring home some hardware, as we build a dynasty that will continue for future athletes. When I entered as a freshman, my team was mediocre. Now, as I leave, my team is outstanding. The hard work put in by both the athletes and the coaches, combined with significant involvement from the parents, helped to solidify SJB as a force both on the water and in training. I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal. Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever. I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.

Four students from East Islip High School – Dominick Barbato, Derek Dattero, William Meehan and Allison Pinz – were named winners at the 2014 Town of Islip Student Achievement Awards Night, held May 24th at the town’s offices. Barbato was the winner of the leadership award, given to selfmotivated, courageous, responsible students who display special ability to confidently lead by example and inspire others to follow them. Dattero won in the science category, an

honor given to students who exhibit outstanding potential in the sciences as demonstrated by specific projects or reports and by participating in science fairs and graduate research projects. Pinz was the winner in fine arts, an award for students who display outstanding talent in painting, drawing, sculpture, design, graphic art or other artistic media; participate in art clubs; win design contests; and whose work is selected to appear in various publications or on display. Meehan, who was unable

FLOWERS INSPIRE - During the month of May, second-graders at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School worked on drawings inspired by the poem A Rain Song, by Evaleen Stein. The students practiced their visualization skills by imagining what they would see, hear, feel, taste and smell as they read the poem. During a special outdoor art class, they learned observational skills to help them look carefully at tulips and daffodils growing outside the school. Students observed details about the flowers and drew what they saw to create realistic drawings. Surrealism In Action Surrealism was the recent focus for students in East Islip High School teacher Daniel Figliozzi’s drawing classes, with the resulting artwork displayed in the school’s art wing and main lobby showcases. After studying iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dali’s portraits, the students looked at his paintings “Galatea of the Spheres” and “Raphaelesque Head Exploding” for inspiration, studying the various formal similarities of these works and also analyzing their differences. “Each Dali piece conveys a dreamlike quality through movement and floating shapes,” said Figliozzi. “The shapes form the portrait image, which was a goal for students in creating successful drawings.” The process for creating the student drawings was multifaceted and required numerous developmental steps. The young artists began by enlarging portraits of their choice via the grid enlargement method. They then chose shapes and forms – acting as positive space – to repeat throughout the composition of the portraits. All other areas of the compositions were erased and common backgrounds were chosen and applied. At this point, the shapes and portraits meshed together and organically formed a common theme for many of the students. Finally, the students used colored pencils to create fragmented drawings full of movement and interesting juxtapositions. “I got the idea for this lesson after viewing a painting in Scholastic magazine,” said Figliozzi. “It was my first

time teaching the lesson, which was a challenge.” “I enjoyed the project because you could pick whichever person you wanted, use whatever colors you wanted and make the drawing as close to the picture as possible,” said sophomore Nicole Cardone, who created an outstanding drawing of John Lennon. “The most challenging part of the project was to enlarge the picture.” Another difficulty for many students was the creation of subtle variations in skin tone. “Getting the colors of

Crosby used organic shapes to fragment her face in her drawing, and incorporated cool grays in her background to contrast the warm shades of her skin tone. “I thought it was cool doing an interesting background underneath the portrait,” she said. “I’m really happy and proud of my students and the beautiful drawings they created,” said Figliozzi. “One of the hardest things to draw is a portrait.
