Spring Concert Splendor

ast Islip’s spring concert season proved a delight for the ears and a testament to the depth of student talent and the rigorous curriculum of the music program, befitting a district that was again named a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. At the annual spring concert, the East Islip High School String Orchestra’s rendition of “A Irish Party in Third Class” from Titanic was accompanied by an Irish step dancer.

Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate

goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

Swampy Story In a superbly swampy celebration of the fine and performing arts, the entire second grade of East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School presented the musical “Swamped!” on May 14th. The John Higgins and John Jacobson musical’s storyline involves a party in a swamp and is based on lessons of friendship, tolerance, and dealing with change.

Under the expert direction of music teacher Aaron Ely, the talented young actors sang, danced and performed “Swamped!” for their classmates and school staff during the day, and in front of their parents and families at the evening’s “Curriculum Cruise.” The set was designed by art teacher Elizabeth Sullivan, whose students created large, colorful

swamp animals and insects that were displayed throughout the hallways of Connetquot. “The production was truly inspirational, as the themes of character education were interwoven in the storyline,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “Everyone who attended had a fantastic learning experience.”

Shaking Up Shakespeare East Islip High School freshmen and sophomores in teacher Greg Kguloian’s classes learned to connect to the themes and characters of William Shakespeare’s plays “Julius Caesar” and “Romeo and Juliet” through a hand-on act of translation. In the “Shake-It-Up Shakespeare” program, the students themselves worked to modernize Shakespeare’s Elizabethan-

era language to make it easily understandable to a 21st century high school audience. Broken down into small acting troupes of three or four students, and armed with costumes and props, they then acted out scenes from their modernday translations in front of a green screen and their classmates during performances on May 21st at the school’s television

studio. “Each group was amazing,” said Kguloian. “There was real effort to not only update the language of the ‘Immortal Bard,’ but to show how well they understood the literature and expounded upon the deeper meanings that the Shakespearean language evokes. I am so appreciative of how my kids brought these pieces of classic literature to life.”

East Islip’s spring concert season proved a delight for the ears and a testament to the depth of student talent and the rigorous curriculum of the music program, befitting a district that was again named a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. The youngest studentmusicians, from the fourth and fifth grades at John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools, each showed off their progressing skills at dual concerts, one held during the day at the school itself, in front of peers and staff, and an evening show for parents held at East Islip High School’s Rydzeski Hall auditorium. RCK’s musicians kicked off the series on May 4th, with the fourth-grade band enthusiastically tackling “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” from memory. At JFK’s May 5th concerts,

students performed music from various time periods in both the beginner and advanced orchestras and bands. JFK’s beginner band performed several pieces including “Appalachian Folk Dance” by Robert W. Smith, while the advanced band performed a selection of tunes arranged by Michael Story, including his own “Ovation” and “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. “The Gettysburg Address” proved a particular highlight, with teacher Karl Von Glahn dressed as Abraham Lincoln, reciting the speech alongside the band’s performance. East Islip Middle School’s concerts, held at the high school on May 6th and 11th, featured eight different ensembles, with highlights including opening “Aladdin” by the concert band, the girls chorus’ rendition of traditional Scottish

song “Over the Sea to Sky,” a Queen tribute by the concert choir with soloist Nia Kalodimos, and the eighth-grade string orchestra’s performance of music from “The Hunger Games.” The culminating concerts by the high school’s musicians, held on May 15th and 18th, showcased seven sensational ensembles. The string orchestra’s rendition of “An Irish Party in Third Class” from “Titanic,” accompanied by an Irish step dancer, was one of many memorable moments, along with the concert choir and vocal jazz ensemble’s joint take on Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” the concert band’s “Russian Sailor’s Dance,” and the Japanese-language “Hisakata (The Gentle Light of Spring)” from the women’s choir.

Eagle Scout Named Angelo Magoulas, a Boy Scout and senior at Islip High School, was honored with Eagle Scout recognition at a May 21st ceremony held at the district’s Wing Elementary School. His Eagle Scout certificate was presented by Islip Superintendent of Schools Susan Schnebel.

Magoulas earned his achievement through a project in which the young man converted the food pantry at his church, St. Peter the Apostle in Islip Terrace, raising funds last summer through a car wash and bottle and can recycling drive. “It’s a really big honor

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS - Members of the Islip Town Board recently honored forty-two students at the Town’s annual Student Achievement Awards. The event congratulates those students who have excelled in a certain scholastic field, and honorees are drawn from across Islip Town. This year, awards were given in the following categories: Technology, Social Studies, Service to People in Need, Leadership, Scholar Athletes, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics and Science.

Second-graders in Patrice Mercurio’s class at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently wrote, edited and illustrated their very own storybooks as part of a project that Mercurio dubbed “Meet the Author.” The children spent two weeks working through the writing process, beginning by individually

brainstorming their story ideas and mapping out the plots on their story organizers. They named their characters and created problems to be solved in their stories, then each sat down independently and conferenced with Mercurio. The students revised their work by adding details to expand their stories and help make

them more interesting. Using a peer editing process to correct any mistakes, the secondgraders then handed in their final copies to be typed and bound into storybooks. Once the books were bound, each student illustrated their work one page at a time, and designed the covers. The finished storybooks were displayed for their parents during the Curriculum Cruise in May, and the young authors will read the books to Timber Point’s younger students. “We are trying to motivate the students to continue writing and sharing their wonderful imaginations with others,” said Mercurio. “They will hopefully write many more books in their academic future.”

East Islip High School’s varsity softball team members again showed their deep sense of volunteerism at this year’s Special Olympics Long Island Spring Games North, held at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station. The Lady Redmen players partnered up with athletes, taking them to enjoy food, DJ music and

On Saturday, May 2nd, over 400 participants representing 32 school districts attended Bay Shore Middle School’s Students of Long Island Makers Expo (SLIME). SLIME showcased the various artistic and innovative talents of Long Island students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Emma Ingold, tween author of The Book of Haunts, was on hand to autograph copies of her book. Middle School teachers Mr. Kaplan and Mr. Orofino shared projects made by students in the Toy Making Club and demonstrated the 3D printer. The Bay Shore High

School Robotics Team brought two robots that students designed and created. Participants also had the opportunity to participate in “make and take” and “make and donate” projects at the Expo. They created brushbot robots, picture frames, cards for soldiers, pillows for animal shelters and blankets for babies. The Expo also featured a “Trash to Fashion” show, which challenged students to create wearable items from recycled materials. First place went to Myiah Petroro of Island Trees; in second place was Bay Shore’s own Mallory Morton. The event was coordinated by Kristina

Holzweiss (librarian) and Maryann Almes (reading teacher), with assistance from Lisa Morales (parent). Committee members included Gina Seymour (Islip HS) and Deb Olsen (South Country Elementary School). When asked to reflect on the event, Mrs. Holzweiss said, “I was really happy with how SLIME went. It took a lot of hard work, but I think people enjoyed the day.” The main funding for SLIME came from a grant received from Farmers Insurance through Adopta-Classroom, as well as the Bay Shore Lions Club and Bay Shore Rotary.

Air Force Airman Justice Barnhill graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military

discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Barnhill is the son of Tami Bohne of Central Islip. He is also the brother of Richard Hobbs. The airman graduated in 2014 from St. John The Baptist Diocesan High School, West Islip.

For the fifth consecutive year, Islip’s Sherwood Elementary School has partnered with the Seatuck Environmental Association to help reintroduce the northern bobwhite quail to Long Island. Once native to the area, the bobwhite’s

presence will help reduce the tick population. Students in nine Sherwood classes were able to view the birds hatching during May. The quail chicks will live in the classrooms for three weeks before being released to

East Islip High School’s Class of 2015 will honor two outstanding seniors as co-valedictorians at the school’s June 26th commencement, Lauren Farrell and Valli Mani. Farrell, who will finish the year with a weighted GPA of 107.456, will attend SUNY Geneseo in this fall, where she plans to study chemical engineering. The historian of the East Islip chapter of

the National Honor Society, Farrell is also a member of the Science Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and Girls Leaders Club. She earned AP Scholar with Distinction honors this year, and was selected to participate in the prestigious Empire State Girls program. She plays on the varsity tennis team. Mani, finishing with a weighted GPA of 107.421, is set to begin a combined bachelor’s/MD program in pre-med biology this fall at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, with a guaranteed entry to the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia after three years at Villanova. Recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, Mani serves as treasurer of the school’s Science

Shark Tournament Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators. Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest mako,

heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species. In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the study of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that do not meet strict weight requirements. In 2014, more than $485,000 in cash, prizes, and trophies were paid out. Over the course of two days, 117 boats and 702 anglers brought in 33 fish, including ten Makos, 14 Threshers and nine

Blue Sharks. The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.” Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island
