This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them ﬂying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their ﬂight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

Seventh-graders in East Islip Middle School teacher Rena Costello’s home economics classes went home last month with a unique Mother’s Day gift of hand-made pillows. Costello and her students researched shabby chic decor, followed by the students viewing a variety of burlap bag pillows designs online. Each student then designed their own pillow in class, doing the sewing and decorating themselves. “These pillows are very popular in stores and online, but you can’t buy our pillows because each one was designed by the student and no two are alike,” said Costello. “Some of my students put their family’s name on the pillow, or the word ‘Mom’, others decorated them with ribbon and lace, but all of them made their moms smile.”

resident and retired industrial engineer, was a prisoner at several infamous concentration camps between the ages of 15 and 17. His ordeal began when his family was forced to move from Berlin to Zagreb, Yugoslavia in 1933. When the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia, Reich was forced to live in hiding for two years before being found, arrested and sent to the Terezin camp in 1943. He was transferred to Auschwitz in 1944, where he was tattooed with a number and barely avoided the gas chambers. After a winter death march, Reich was sent to the Mauthausen camp, where he was eventually liberated by American troops on May 5th, 1945. In his discussion, he pointed out parallels between past atrocities and modern bullying behaviors, and urged each student to be a JUST person, an acronym he devised that stands for “judge situation, understand problem, solve and take action.”

“The one thing that always stands out to me about Mr. Reich is the idea of acceptance not tolerance,” said Assistant Principal James Cameron. “His message to the students is to be accepting of others, not tolerant. When you are tolerant of people, you may at times become intolerant. When you accept others, you are more at peace with who and what they stand for.” “That message is a powerful one in today’s climate of bullying and prejudice,” added eighthgrade social studies teacher Michael Argenziano. “Mr. Reich uses his experiences to connect the students to the how and why an event like the Holocaust did happen and can happen again. He is current, and changes his presentation each time he visits, but the heart of the message always rings loud and clear.”

Holocaust survivor Werner Reich recently shared his experiences and offered wise solutions to bullying and intolerance in a memorable, moving talk with students at Islip Middle School. The May assembly was part of the school’s annual Holocaust remembrance, which it has been holding in various forms for the past 20 years, forming part of the character education program as well as part of Islip’s studies on World War II, civics and citizenship. The program began with now retired teachers Adina Karp and Paul Tapogna, who brought in Holocaust survivor Max Tempkin and his wife Steffi to speak to the students. After about a dozen years, Tempkin was no longer able to attend, and teachers Rich Napolitano and Erica Rinear made arrangements through the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Nassau County to have Reich take over the presentations. Technical 12 Technical papers by 12 East Islip High School students were selected as finalists in the school’s debut STEM Research Challenge, with six going on to win prizes. The competition was offered by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Education’s Long Island Section and Life Members Affinity Group, who provided financial support for the project. The STEM Challenge – designed to encourage high schoolers to pursue careers involving science, technology, engineering, medicine and math – required each participating student to write a technical paper on the

subject “STEM Research: Scientific Exploration in the Digital Age with Micro/ Nano Technology.” The research papers had to be based on current activities and developments being pursued by scientific communities around the world, creating a strong focus on current and developing science. “This was a major incentive for students to become familiar with current scientific disciplines,” said East Islip’s guidance director, Israel Malinowitzer. “With the continuing advancements in STEM fields, it was important not only to provide an expansion of recognition

of the vast scientific endeavors in the many fields, but also reveal the educational requirements for those activities. With the large array of scientific and technical research journals and publications available online, students had a broad selection of current research topics to examine, and were encouraged to express their opinions about their findings, as well as highlight possible careers in developing fields.” Of the 29 papers that were submitted, 12 were selected by the school faculty as finalists – six representing the Lower Division (grades 9 and 10), and six representing the

Upper Division (grades 11 and 12). These 12 papers were then reviewed by a panel of judges from academia and business, chaired by Marjaneh Issapour, a professor of electrical engineering and computer engineering technology at Farmingdale State College. The papers were judged on the novelty of the work, relating to STEM concepts; the impact of the work on society; the goals, objectives and complexity of the work; the significance of the findings, results and conclusions of the work; and its overall organization. In the Lower Division of freshmen and sophomores, Kylie Goess won first place

for “Chemistry Trick Paves Way for Safer Diabetes Medication,” earning her a $500 prize; Emily Mahoney won second for “Nanotechnology Used to Cure Cancer Without Harming Healthy Cells,” earning a $250 prize; and James Smalley won third place for “Nanoparticles Used in New Insulin Make Life Easier for Diabetic Patients,” earning him a $100 prize. In the Upper Division of juniors and seniors, Phoebe Tedesco won first place for “Color Blindness and Biotechnology,” earning her a $500 prize; Grace Vaca won second place for “Nano/Micro Technology and Parkinson’s Disease,”

earning a $250 prize; and Asma Malik won third for “Nanotechnology Engineers Use Electrospinning to Create the Super Condom,” earning a $100 prize. Certificates of merit were awarded to the remaining six finalists: Cierra Colon, Michaela Fehn, Emily Fishman, Stephanie Milito, Ran Soto and Kenny Terwilliger. IEEE representative Lou Luceri presented the top six student winners with their prizes in an April 20 ceremony at the school library. All of the 12 participating students were honored at the May 17th meeting of the East Islip Board of Education.
