Golf Classic Returns On Tuesday, June 13th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 29th annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho and the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate all participants for the golf event at the Meadow Brook Club and an afternoon shotgun start at Piping Rock. There will also be themed holes and raffles along the 18-hole course. Cocktail dinner reception and awards will follow at the Meadow Brook Club for both courses. For tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with round robin play to follow. Lunch will be served after the tournament. Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Under the umbrella, called spell I came to know you rather well. As your catching words came my way Under the umbrella I began to sway. For quite a while now I tried to figure out What love, admiration and spells are about. Powers of a psyche are mine from time to time Most often when cupid his bells lets chime. I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see. Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source. Onto my open umbrella those spells often fall Slowly one by one to the ground they roll. I don’t want them to get me into their grip I am afraid that into obsession I might slip. Yet, at times I succumb and those powers use I do with you, infatuation is my excuse! Any and all caution is thrown out to hell I close the umbrella and submit to the spell!

Volunteers Needed Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for our Long Island Seniors living in nursing homes and long term adult care homes throughout Suffolk County. A certified Ombudsman

were paired with a high school student based on information gathered from a student silhouette worksheet. The students become pen pals and exchanged letters throughout the year. The high school students

created an original, illustrated book based on the characteristics and preferences of their fifth grade buddy. The students recently came together to share the original books at the High School.

SPIRIT OF GIVING - The Gardiner Manor School Service Society held a Spring Charity Drive. The students spread the word and collected hundreds of items from Gardiner Manor families. The items were donated to Head Start Centers and to Helping Hands in West Islip, which distributes needed items to local shelters. Way to go, Gardiner Manor Service Society! Sheriffs Memorial

Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Comptroller John Kennedy, County Executive Bellone and other members of the Suffolk County Legislature joined heads of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office on a sullen Friday morning to commemorate members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office killed in the line of duty since the late 19th century. Legislator Kate Browning presided over the memorial as Master of Ceremonies. The memorial was opened by

John Becker, President of the Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association, and also featured Louis Viscusi, President of the Suffolk County Corrections Officers’ Association. Looked on by the attendees in a somber ceremony, each of the 70 members of the Sheriff’s Office and Department of Corrections died in the line of duty between 1887 and 2013 had a bell rung in their memory. Wreaths were subsequently placed on the memorial and a

benediction was given by Deacon James P. McLaughlin. “I am thankful for the sacrifices that our Deputy Sheriffs and Corrections Officers make every day, seventy men have died in the line of duty since 1887,” Legislator Kennedy stated. “I hope that these seventy men and woman continue to remind us of the sacrifices that law enforcement officers make daily to keep us safe, and I pray that this list will never grow longer.”

LIGHTING UP BLUE - Recently, the Brook Avenue School faculty wore blue to ‘Light it up Blue’ for Autism Awareness Month. Some of the staff also decorated their doors with words of inspiration to promote the acceptance of Autism. Brook Avenue’s walls will be decorated with puzzle pieces donated by students, faculty and staff throughout the month of April. The Brook Avenue family is proud to support the idea that Autism is something to be understood and not cured.

Earning Recognition Students at Islip’s high school and middle school recently participated in the 2017 Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge, in which they competed to create innovative and userfriendly projects that take new approaches to real-life challenges. Each challenge required students to complete an application and follow the LIFACS four-point scale rubric. Guided by FACS teachers Natalie Hamilton

and Heidi Stevens, the Islip students developed their projects to submit to the LIFACS competition. Three Islip students took home first-place awards in three different categories for both middle school and high school divisions. Sixth-graders Kyle Widecki and Emily Wirth were named grand prize winners in the “Let Them Eat Cake” and “It’s Not Easy Being Green” challenges. Junior Nancy Pramanand was the grand prize “Snack Attack”

winner. Each winning student received a $100 cash prize and certificate. Additionally, Hamilton was awarded the Promising New Professional Award for Suffolk County, recognizing her excellence in the classroom and her profession. Islip’s winners were subsequently honored at the LIFACS Spring Professional Development Conference, held on April 28th at Fox Hollow in Woodbury.

Palmeri won the Rensselaer Medal merit scholarship last year for his superlative academic achievements in mathematics and science, and will major in engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Belyea, also an AP Scholar with Distinction, serves as secretary of the National Honor Society,

and is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, SADD Club and Interact Club. She was also honored as a Breakfast of Champions recipient. This Father’s Day, we celebrate all the men in our lives and the many men in Suffolk County who take on the role of Fresh Air father, as they open their hearts to New York City children through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program for one to two weeks during the summer. “Hosting has been a wonderful experience. It’s provided us with special memories and gives us something to look forward to every summer,” says Richard, a Fresh Air host father.

Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada. Fresh Air children are given the opportunity to experience a world outside of New York City full of backyards to play in and lakes to swim in. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are

reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from lowincome communities since 1877. A Time to Remember

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,

sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.

There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.
