A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island's first newspaper will be unveiled in Sag Harbor on June 6th. The marker will commemorate David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796. The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker is being installed by the Village of Sag Harbor. The dedication ceremony will be held across the street from the historical society office at 174 Main Street at 1 p.m.

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. with Jamie Lynn Ryan Dance students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts had the pleasure of taking a class led by world-renowned dancer, choreographer and teacher Anabella Lenzu. The master class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its dance students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field. Originally from Argentina, Ms. Lenzu has more than 25 years of experience working in Argentina, Chile, Italy and the USA. As artistic director of Anabella Lenzu/ DanceDrama, she draws on her diverse background to create thought-provoking and socially-conscious

dance theatre in the interest of improving the human condition. Ms. Lenzu instructed the students to listen to the choreography she has created, but to interpret it for themselves. “I love the diversity of the students here,” she said of the LIHSA dance students. “Some are shy, some more outgoing. I help them find their voices. It’s a challenge for the teacher.” Her choreography has been commissioned all over the world for opera, TV programs, theatre productions and by many dance companies. She founded her own dance school, L’Atelier Centro Creativo de Danza, in 1994 in Argentina, and has maintained an active teaching career ever since.

She currently conducts classes at Peridance Capezio Center, Wagner College and Lehman College. She has written for various dance and arts magazines, and published her first book in 2013, entitled “Unveiling Motion and Emotion.” The book contains writings in Spanish and English on the importance of dance, community, choreography and dance pedagogy. “This was an exciting class, because it helped the students discover another character,” said LIHSA Dance Instructor Dina Denis Paolucci. “It’s not just dancing; there’s a deeper meaning to their movements. Ms. Lenzu is a creative being.”

Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some

carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is

as important as physical health at 631.226.3900. They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden! Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Its mission is to establish positive and supportive mentor relationships with a statewide, school-based, unique one-to-one Mentoring Program that aims to reduce the number of students dropping out of school. They leverage the resources of communities, schools and businesses to match youth with volunteer mentors who are screened and trained. As the NYS Mentoring Program wraps up the 2017-2018 school year, they are starting to work on their Fall programs. They are searching for compassionate mentors to work with the students they serve here on Long Island. Space Station Lectures Montauk Observatory (MO) is honored to host retired Marine Colonel and NASA Astronaut Randy Bresnik to present two free lectures at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall, June 27th and June 29th. Col. Bresnik will share highlights from his recent long duration mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS.) Audiences also will have the unique opportunity to hear from an astronaut’s spouse who is distinguished in her own right. Rebecca Bresnik Esq. serves as Associate Chief Counsel for International Matters at NASA's Johnson Space Center and is the lead attorney for the ISS; she will co-present with her husband. Col. Bresnik returned from his most recent mission in December, 2017, where he served as the Commander of the International Space

Station for Expedition 53 and flight engineer for Expedition 52. Expedition 52/53 was completed in 139 days, making 2,224 orbits of the Earth and traveling 58,835,163 miles. "The Bresniks are both remarkable people,” said Terry Bienstock, President of Montauk Observatory. “Their personal stories and their accomplishments are inspiring. We are thrilled to be joined by our co-sponsors in bringing the Bresniks to our community for these informative programs. The opportunity for our residents and their kids to spend time with Randy and Rebecca will be something we will remember for the rest of our lives." At the first lecture, “Space Exploration,” scheduled for Wednesday, June 27th, at 8 p.m., the audience will have a rare opportunity to learn about space from the insiders:

what it's like to live and work in space, to be an astronaut and responsible for the ISS, its overall mission success, the safety of the crew and mission objectives; as well as what is involved here on the ground in handling the complex challenges of one of the most ambitious international collaborations (22 participating member countries) ever attempted. This event is intended for ages 15 years and up. The second event is a presentation for all ages. “My Life as an Astronaut,” will be held Friday, June 29th, at 2 p.m. Would you like to meet an astronaut, find out how to become one, learn what it’s like to work for NASA? Even if you’re just curious about all things related to astronomy and space, come meet the Bresniks at this family-friendly event. Col. Bresnik will

share his experiences in space, answer questions, and provide an opportunity to take a photo or get an autograph. Intended for younger audiences, this is a great chance for kids to meet and be inspired by a real, live astronaut. All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult. The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. Most fast food restaurants focus on convenience and not nutrition. Nutrition is key to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that I have changed significantly since losing 110 lbs.

The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week. They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients, perfect for my needs. For my dining choice, I chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna

poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining. Education Event NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently partnered with National Grid to host a Memorial Day education event for 100 local students from Roosevelt Middle School at the Veterans Memorial located on the plaza of NYCB LIVE. With the support of local Long Island veterans and active duty military, the Roosevelt Middle School students had the opportunity to learn about the branches of the military and Long Island’s service contributions to the United States armed forces. The Memorial Day education event was a part of the venue’s new community platform NYCB LIVE Cares, which harnesses the power of sports and entertainment to make an impact in the Long Island community. “The Coliseum serves as

a symbol and pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Josh Pruss, Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships for Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. “We are proud to work with National Grid on this important event. Recently, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs P.B.A. and the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association, hosted their annual Memorial Service to honor Suffolk County’s Corrections Officers and Deputy Sheriffs who have died in service. County Executive Steve Bellone was the Master of Ceremonies for the annual service, which took place on the grounds

of the Sheriff’s Office in Riverhead. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr., who gave his first Memorial Service Address, stated: “It is truly my privilege and an honor for me to be here as we pay tribute to the lives and work of the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office who died in service since 1887, and throughout our long history. The Sheriff’s Office is a unique agency - steeped in

historic significance; and while our official duties may have changed over several centuries, our central mission to serve and protect is what has connected us through 335 years of continuous service to Long Island.” The ceremony was attended by family members of the deceased who placed roses by the Sheriff’s Office monument on the grounds of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility.

Suffolk County teenagers will once again have an opportunity to be recognized for their community service and personal accomplishments with the return of Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory’s Distinguished Youth Award program. Created in 2017, the program focuses on youth ages 13 to 18 who are taking the initiative to explore their communities as well as develop their abilities. The program invites participants to set and work toward goals in at least two of four areas: Volunteer Service, which includes volunteering time to benefit members of the community; Personal Development, which includes assessing one’s own skills and setting goals for personal improvement; Exploration of Suffolk County, which involves visiting 15 of Suffolk County’s parks; and Physical Fitness, designed

to increase participants’ level of physical activity to promote physical and mental well-being. Participants will work closely with local elected officials to lay out goals and a plan to accomplish them and will have a year to complete their tasks. Individuals who participate will be rewarded with one of the three medals based on the number of categories they complete. The Bronze Medal will be awarded to participants who complete two of the four listed program areas, while the Silver Medal will be awarded to individuals who complete three of the four areas. Participants who successfully complete all four areas will be rewarded the highest level of achievement, the Gold Medal. “Suffolk County is filled with talented and dedicated young people, and the Distinguished Youth Award gives them a unique chance to work

with local officials, connect with their communities, and set and reach goals for their own personal development,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “These young people are our future, and this program will help them become leaders. We look forward to recognizing them for their hard work.” Registration for the Distinguished Youth Award is open through June 30, 2018. Mermaid Parade Set The o-fish-al beer of the Parade will be flowing all day. Join for the 36th Annual Mermaid Parade, Saturday June 16th. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. on West 21st and Surf Avenue and proceeds on Surf Avenue to West 10th, then heads south to the Boardwalk and then west back to its ending point at Steeplechase Plaza on the Boardwalk. The Mermaid Parade is a unique and artistic celebration of ancient mythology and the honkytonk seaside ritual that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the amusement district. The parade features marching bands, drill teams, floats, antique cars and some 1,500 participants dressed in hand-made costume of mermaids, sea creatures, amusement rides and Neptunes. It is the largest art parade in the nation and the largest event of the year in Coney Island.

Spectacular Season Sisters Kylie Ohlmiller and Taryn Ohlmiller – both Islip High School alumni – were integral parts of the Stony Brook University women’s lacrosse team’s success this year. At an April 21st home game against UMBC, Kylie, a senior and the Seawolves scoring leader, broke two NCAA records and became the Division I women’s lacrosse all-time leader in career points and career assists. Scoring eight points in the game, she was named National Player of the Week. Taryn, a sophomore, scored three goals and two assists. At Islip, Kylie was lacrosse team captain for her final three years, scored 255 goals, was a US Lacrosse All-American and two-time Academic AllAmerican, was named to the All-Long Island team and earned All-County status four times. She also captained the volleyball and basketball teams during her senior year. Kylie’s many honors at Stony Brook include National Player of the Week; ECAC Rookie of the Week; America East Most Outstanding Player, Offensive Player of the

Week; Rookie of the Week, Rookie of the Year, firstteam all-conference and All-Championship Team; IWLCA Division I Attacker of the Year, Player of the Week, and first-team All-American; and MidAtlantic All-Region first team. In 2017, she broke the single-season points and assists records; this year, she became the first female athlete at Stony Brook to receive her own bobblehead. Taryn, a two-time captain at Islip, likewise had a memorable high school career. She was named Under Armour All-American, All-Long Island and second-team All-Metro, with four AllCounty selections and two All-League. She also was a important part of Islip’s basketball – where she earned All-County honors – and volleyball team. In her two years at Stony Brook, Taryn was named third-team IWLCA All-American, America East Rookie of the Year, first-team all-conference, and all-rookie team. Her 101 points – ranking second among all Division I freshmen – were the most by a freshman in Stony

Brook history. “These two young ladies have become spectacular athletes,” said Islip Superintendent Susan Schnebel, who was in attendance at the April game to cheer on the sisters. Stony Brook’s spectacular recordbreaking year came to an end on May 19th as the fifth-seeded Seawolves were defeated 12-11 in overtime by Boston College in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. They finished the year with an enviable 20-1 record. In her final appearance for Stony Brook, Kylie scored two goals and three assists, finishing her college lacrosse career with 498 points and 246 assists, both new NCAA Division I records. Taryn was unable to play in the quarterfinal game due to a torn ACL. Kylie, a 2017 finalist (the first in Stony Brook history), has again been chosen as one of the five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award for best player in collegiate lacrosse. The Tewaaraton Foundation will announce the 2018 winner on May 31st.

Learning to Network Islip High School recently held an interviewing and networking event for juniors, hosted the Islip School to Careers Partnership. Professionals from within the district as well as guests from the Town of Islip, Suffolk County’s legislature and department of civil service, Northwell Health’s Southside Hospital, LIU Post and Youth Enrichment Services participated in various workshops with the students. The interviewing

workshops entailed watching and critiquing mock interviews, learning about college admissions interviews, and discussing civil service careers and opportunities. The networking portion, held in the school’s gymnasium, featured stations that the students rotated through. The stations were designed to prompt the students to communicate, solicit information about others, answer questions about themselves and feel comfortable speaking

to people they may not necessarily talk to on a daily basis. “This day was designed to prepare juniors for upcoming job and college interviews, as well as learning interpersonal communication and networking skills,” said business teacher Renee Clock, who cochairs the School to Careers Partnership with Assistant Principal Curtis Juengerkes.

Islip sixth-graders in the district’s EXCEL program took a wonderful walking food tour on Islip’s Main Street on May 18th, accompanied by EXCEL coordinator Julia Johnson and FACS teacher Natalie De Sena. The 25 participating middle schoolers began their day with an educational visit to Tellers steakhouse. Next door at the Italian restaurant Verace, they learned how to make meatballs with

Executive Chef Mike Maneri. Lunch at Pizza Parm was up next, where the students watched Pizza Parm General Manager Lorenzo Magliulo toss pizzas. He gave them a ball of raw dough to examine before they chowed down on fresh pies and garlic knots. The tour concluded with a stroll down to Coyle’s Ice Cream, where they learned how to make ice cream and decorate cakes with John Proto. “The planning was a

year in the making,” said Johnson regarding the tour. “Natalie and I started working on it last spring. We thought a walking food tour would be an ideal way to connect kids with their community and to provide a behind-thescenes glimpse of people pursuing their passions and the business of owning and running a restaurant or local business. It was a huge success and we hope to make it an annual trip.”

Vaccaro, president of the press club, the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, said, "Over the last few years the press club has worked hard to recognize places of historical significance in journalism on Long Island. This is yet another example of our board aiming to educate the public on local history. Thank you to the Sag Harbor Historical Society for all of their help with the project." Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what

many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. Several years later Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed, which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid. A bond of $2,500 was set by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him

becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one knows the real story of his demise, but it is thought that he took ill off the coast of Africa and died. He was survived by his wife Nancy and daughter, Fanny, who would become Jack Youngs’ great-great grandmother.
