FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social

distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches;

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area; Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill; Never leave your grill unattended while in use; Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it; Always use foodapproved fire starters for wood grills and smokers. Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the

late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. EI Senior Swimmers Llewellyn And Stanzione Sign With Oneonta

East Islip High School seniors James Llewellyn and Jon Stanzione signed national letters of intent on May 13 to continue their swimming careers this fall at the State University of New York College at Oneonta. Both Llewellyn and Stanzione serve as senior captains of East Islip’s swimming and diving team, and the pair broke a 40-year

school record as part of the 200-meter medley relay team. Llewellyn has earned All-State, All-County and Scholar-Athlete recognition. He plans to major in education. Stanzione has earned All-State, All-Long Island, All-County, All-League, Scholar-Athlete, High Minds in Motion and High Honor Roll recognition,

and was the recipient of the Carey Leadership Award. He is also a member of t National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and Science Honor Society. Stanzione will pursue a double major in geology and earth science at SUNY Oneonta, which granted him a Presidential Scholarship.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Students Enjoy A Week Of Career Exploration Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School held College and Career Readiness Week from April 12-16, focusing on expanding students’ awareness of their personal interests, passions, skills and strengths, and providing them with the chance to explore different career opportunities. Each class participated in different college and career exploration activities. Second graders learned all about college and used their imagination to create their own colleges and mascots. Third graders explored their passions and interests, and applied them to the world of work, completing an “I will change the world in my future career” activity. Fourth graders learned about different career clusters by participating in a career necktie activity. Students read through a series of statements

and decided which was most interesting to them. Based on their interest, they selected which hue to color in their ties. At the conclusion, the fourth graders noted which colors they used the most throughout the activity and were placed in a career cluster to explore different types of jobs. Fifth graders learned about John Holland’s six personality types and completed a career interest inventory. They discovered which personality type they fit into most and explored a variety of career options, then completed a career research pennant on a job that interested them. Throughout the week, Commack Road’s students participated in a schoolwide scavenger hunt, which featured college terminology and questions about the college and career experiences of the school’s teachers

and staff. Scavenger hunt clues were placed around the halls and incorporated into announcements. Classes who completed the scavenger hunt were entered into a drawing to receive a class prize.
