Living in the shadow of the largest city in America, many can relate to the trials and sorrows brought about by the horrendous attack on our nation on September eleventh 2001. As horrible as that day was, while the rest of the world was fleeing the towers, a few brave men and women were running towards the wreckage to save as many lives as they could. Some of them died that day, but many more are perishing now due to the diseases that they contracted from working in the ruins of the towers. It is these men and women whom Legislator Leslie Kennedy paid homage to at the 911 Responders

Leslie Kennedy, along with Comptroller John Kennedy, the 911 Responders Remembered Park Board, and the FealGood Foundation gathered to read the new names to be added to The Wall of Heroes. However, they weren’t the only ones to honor these heroes. Jon Stewart, former host of the Daily Show and fervent advocate for 911 responders, read the names of the heroes who are to be added to the wall. To end the ceremony, John and Leslie Kennedy had the privilege of laying the wreath on the Wall of Heroes. “These men and

women selflessly gave their lives to help when our nation needed it most. It is so sad to see people still dying as a result of the efforts they made to save lives that day,” said Leslie Kennedy. “I want to thank all the first responders and their families. These families make the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. I also want to thank Jon Stewart for working tirelessly for the benefit of 911 responders, and I thank him for honoring their memory today.” Sixty five names will be added to the Wall of Heroes to commemorate those who have passed on since the last names were added to the Wall.

The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Mathness Winners At March Mathness, a special tournament held at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementaries schools, students had fun solving math problems and competing against a computer, fellow students, other classes and themselves. The four top-scoring individual students – thirdgrader Natalie Mendolia from JFK, and third-grader Lucas Aparicio, fourth-

grader Jared Kelly and fifth-grader Alessandro Inguaggiato from RCK – were honored by the Board of Education at the April 21st business meeting. RCK’s event was kicked off with a pep rally hosted by fifth-grade teacher Robert Chiarelli, with extra entertainment provided by Jack “Blackjack” Ryan of the Harlem Wizards. At RCK, a total of 231,474 problems were attempted schoolwide,

with the top classes hitting remarkable numbers. Carrie Whitehouse’s thirdgrade class worked for 72 hours and 22 minutes, with 21,874 problems attempted; Jerry Orlando’s fourth-grade class worked for 61 hours and 22 minutes, with 15,868 problems attempted; and Kara Houghtaling’s fifthgrade class worked for 155 hours and 34 minutes, with 28,376 problems attempted.

In 2016, NYSSMA, the New York State School Music Association, celebrates its 84th year as the largest state affiliate of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). NYSSMA’s mission is to advocate for and improve music education across New York State by promoting and producing

appropriate activities and programs for its membership and students in member school music programs. This year, NYSSMA’s Spring 2016 Solo & Ensemble Festival in Babylon was filled with high notes, from trumpeters to flautists and vocalists to violinists. Several students from Saints Cyril

and Methodius in Deer Park attended this year, with shiny instruments and clean music sheets in hand. They were ready for the day of auditioning and did their school proud with top marks. Congratulations to all the talented musicians who represented Saints Cyril and Methodius School so well!

Islip High School’s Class of 2016 valedictorian and salutatorian are Amber Yildizel and Brian Lithen, respectively. Yildizel, an exceptional young woman, earned the title of valedictorian with hard work and dedication. Her weighted GPA was 104.42. She is an officer of the school’s National Honor Society and Science Olympiad A team, and serves as vice president of the Yearbook Club. A former officer of the Foreign Language Honor Society, Yildizel is bilingual in English and Turkish

and has exceptional skills in Spanish and Italian. Yildizel will attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island this fall, where she plans to major in international relations. Lithen is graduating from Islip High School with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors. With a weighted GPA of 104.36, he is in the top 5 percent of his graduating class, and has been recognized by the College Board as an AP Scholar with Ddistinction. Lithen is a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor

Society, History Club and Science Olympiad team; for the latter, he serves as an invitation coordinator and Quiz Bowl president. Rebecca from Mineola is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Rebecca is living with Crohn’s diseases which combined with ulcerative colitis, are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. In 2011, as a senior in high school Rebecca started to develop severe abdominal pain in her lower right side. After her first colonoscopy, Rebecca woke up to, “You have Crohn’s Disease... there are support groups for what you’re going through.” What she thought would be a quick fix turned into

a life changing diagnosis. Within two months of diagnosis, Rebecca dropped down to about 90 pounds; hair was thinning, on TPN, could not eat solid food, and was scheduled for surgery. “CCFA has been an incredible organization from the beginning of my IBD journey,” says Rebecca. “I attend yearly talks about uprising medications and technology in the IBD world and am connected through campus connects. Since I was diagnosed, my family and friends have supported me in raising funds and have walked proudly with me at the Take Steps walk. I am proud to be the honoree this year for the CCFA and have aspirations to spread awareness and fundraise greater than any other year. I hope the money raised towards research will someday help find a cure for myself and all

Each of the honorees was celebrated for a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. The scholars received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” District Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon said at the awards ceremony. “Each of them embodies the true spirit of George Farber. They have shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic and demonstrated o u t s t a n d i n g commitment. They have eagerly shared their knowledge and made contributions to their communities. Talented Ten Ten talented East Islip High School studentartists were recently chosen for LIU Post’s 13th annual 12x12 High School Art Exhibition. Their work was on display from May 9th-19th at the Art League Students Gallery at LIU Post’s B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library in Brookville. In digital photography, the chosen work included seniors Lauren Jackson (for “Self-Portrait”), Brittany Martin (“Bella”) and Teresa Teuschler (“Amethyst”); junior Cailin Conlon (“The Elements”); and sophomore Keala Sanders (“Adventureland”). Junior

Meghan O’Reilly was chosen for “Pensive,” a work of acrylic on paper, while senior Bryant Weingarten was selected “Deformity,” a work created with ballpoint pen, marker and colored pencil on paper. In the computer graphics field, the chosen were senior Heather Hoffmann (for “New View”), junior Roisin Ashe (“Butterfly Garden”) and sophomore Angelo Joudah (“Urban Party”). “It was an honor to be exhibited in a college gallery and I am happy my artwork was chosen to be displayed,” said Teuschler, who attended a closing

reception with the other artists on May 18th. “It takes a lot of confidence in oneself to put your art on display for others to see, and it gives me a lot of pride seeing my student-artists take that risk,” said electronic illustration teacher Erin Jacob. “This was an amazing opportunity for students be able to exhibit in a professional gallery,” said photography teacher Heather Toomey. “I am proud of my student exhibitors and the hard work that they put into creating their artwork all year long.”

Special Teacher Commack Road Elementary School secondgrade teacher Brian Smith was recently named a “Teacher of Excellence” as part of a new initiative by State Sen. Phil Boyle in honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week. On May 5th, Boyle hosted an inaugural Teachers of Excellence awards ceremony at the Bay Shore Fire Department, recognizing Smith and 14 other Long Island honorees that he called “our best and brightest teachers who deserve recognition for their dedication to preparing our children for the future.” “Mr. Smith encourages all students to have a voice in their learning,” said Commack Road Principal Jeanette Feminella.

“Students are secure to take risks in their learning with Brian’s nurturing instruction in his classroom.” Smith grew up in Stony Brook and was a member of Ward Melville High School’s Class of 1981. He graduated from Suffolk County Community College in 1983, worked as a systems analyst for the Grumman Corporation in Bethpage and then obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Stony Brook University in 1992. While working at night for Automated Financial Systems in Lake Ronkonkoma, he attended Dowling College fulltime, earning his master’s degree in elementary education from Dowling in 1999. Smith began his

teaching career that year as a part-time instructional aide at Islip Middle School, followed by a stint as a teacher assistant and AIS provider at Commack Road from 2000 until 2002, when he was hired as a second-grade teacher at the school. He currently resides in Coram with his wife, Jennifer. “I was honored to accept Sen. Boyle’s award and to represent Islip’s commitment to excellence in education,” said Smith. “By our very nature, we teachers don’t think about awards so much, as the rewards of our labors are reflected in the eyes of our students, but I am so grateful to Islip. As I tell every new class of parents at Meet the Teacher Night, no one is successful alone.”
