adviser Bridget Lopiccolo. “It is important to have students be able to ask questions and get responses from organizations that are there to help when someone is in crisis. It is our goal at SADD to help educate and promote awareness of the destructive decisions that students may make.”

VETERAN HONORED - On Saturday, May 20th, Congressman Lee Zeldin attended the Suffolk County Armed Forces Day Ceremony at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. Celebrated on the third Saturday in May every year, Armed Forces Day was first observed in 1950 to honor those who have served and those who continue to serve in the five branches of the U.S. military. William Rodriguez, a U.S. Navy veteran, was one of the veterans to be honored at the ceremony. Mr. Rodriguez is retiring as a staffer of the Suffolk County Veterans Service Office, and was presented with a proclamation for his years of service.

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, at left, was joined by Commander Robert “Hoot” Gibson at a dinner with faculty, staff and students a day after Gibson’s inspirational commencement speech at Suffolk County Community College’s 55th commencement on May 21st. Gibson, a 1966 graduate of Suffolk, presented the college, pictured, with artifacts from his voyages aboard the space shuttle including a Suffolk pennant he carried into space. “Commander Gibson was impressed by our
STEM program and the national recognition we received with the award of more than $2.6 million in grant funding in the past decade, and that our STEM scholars have achieved paid research internships in arenas as varied as NASA, in 6 of the 11 federal laboratories around the nation, and also at the Smithsonian Institute,” said President McKay. “Commander Gibson spoke passionately about his academic and career pathway - all , in his words, influenced by his start in engineering science at Suffolk County Community College,” said Suffolk County Community College

Four East Islip students – Elizabeth Hillman, Fallon Juengerkes, Michael Orgera and Kiara Zeledon – made it to the state level of the 2016-2017 PTA Reflections contest, an annual national student recognition program that seeks to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Inspiring original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts, this year’s common theme was “What Is Your Story?” Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School thirdgrader Kiara Zeledon’s entry in the field of dance choreography, “Human”, won the Suffolk County Award of Excellence and New York State Award of Excellence, going on to
compete at the national level. “I did a lyrical contemporary dance about how I feel when I try out for parts in dance class and don’t get them,” said Zeledon, who won at the county and state level last year for her dance “Girl on Fire.” Another RCK student, fifth-grader Fallon Juengerkes, received the Suffolk County Award of Merit in the literature category for “The Best Day and the Worst Day of My Life.” “I thought deeply about the best and worst days of my life,” said Juengerkes. “I wrote about when my mom was going through treatments for breast cancer and how I felt when she was finished and all better.” John F. PTA Reflections Contest grader Michael Orgera earned the Suffolk County Award of Excellence and New York State Award of Merit in visual arts for his piece “Looking through the Lens.” Orgera won a National Award of Excellence last year for his work “Mom,” which is now featured as part of a special exhibit at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. East Islip High Schools senio Elizabeth Hillman won the Suffolk County Award of Merit for her music composition “The Journey Continues.” The students were honored at a recent Board of Education meeting, and presented with certificates by Board President Christopher Zachry and Superintendent John V. Dolan.

Academic Excellence St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that eleven seniors have received the New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence. St. John’s seniors Jonathan Ahearn of Brightwaters, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack, Megan Ferguson of Smithtown, Kaitlyn Frenger of Brentwood, Mary Hovanec of Deer Park, Cameron McCauley of Farmingdale, Ian Mullaney
of Brightwaters, Raquel Palumbo of West Islip, Dominick Rich of Bay Shore, Brianna Russo of Dix Hills and Giulianna Vullo of Bay Shore were all awarded this prestigious award based on their academic achievements at St. John’s. The New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence is awarded to 8,000 NYS students annually. Selection is based on student grades on certain NYS Regents
exams. The student must also be in good academic standing and complete an application of consideration in order to be considered. Bay Shore High School physical education teacher and Varsity Girls Softball coach Jaclyn Pasquerella was recently inducted into the Villanova Athletic Hall of Fame. Ms. Pasquerella, who graduated from Villanova in 2001, was one of the best softball
players in school history. She received All-Regional honors during all four seasons with the team. Ms. Pasquerella still holds the school records for career batting average (.400), career hits (274), season batting average (.470), season hits (93) and
season stolen bases (28). She is second in career stolen bases (79) and ninth in career runs (103). She earned NFCA Academic Recently, South Country All-American honors in School held it’s annual 2001. Congratulations, Ms. Barnes and Noble Book Fair. Pasquerella! Their 3rd grade students put on a fabulous recorder concert for our families
Recently, South Country School held an assembly to pay tribute to African American History and Musicians. Prismatic Magic put on a laser light show that our students will never forget.
Going back in time with music and laser lights, they highlighted the famous African American musicians and historical figures that helped to shape present day America. Students were glued
to the 45-minute presentation that exposed them to the likes of Ray Charles and the Tuskegee Airmen. It was a wonderful and engaging experience the every student, and their teachers, enjoyed!

Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in
the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Medical Career Day In partnership with Northwell Health, East Islip High School’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy hosted its fifth annual Medical Career Day on April 21st, with activities throughout the school for students in grades 8-12. Taking part in the event were 80 Northwell Health medical and business professionals who work in their facilities across Long Island. High school and middle school students visiting the event had the chance to investigate 40 medical exhibits in
the school’s gymnasium, manned by Northwell Health employees, along with medical and health career information tables. The school’s library and auditorium were the sites of informative lectures and presentations by professionals on healthrelated topics such as teen driving, sports and concussions, and drug awareness and prevention. The speakers also discussed careers at Northwell Health and job interview tips. “This event was a wonderful opportunity for our students to get
to know the employees of Northwell Health and to learn about the many different careers that make up the health industry,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer, who organized the event. “We are extremely grateful to Matthew DePace from Northwell Health, along with Vincent Cunningham and Ed Fraser, for making this event possible for the last five years. Our students and faculty learn so much, and we are pleased that this year, our eighth graders were also able to take part in the day.” KINDNESS FOR SHELTER PETS - Donna Marshall, a fourth-grade teacher at East Islip’s John F. Max Cabrera, a 13 yearold Honor student from the Brentwood Middle School, was recently treated to the flight of his life when he flew with Smithsonian Living Legend and National Aviation Hall of Famer Sean Tucker, who was named a Living Legend of Flight by the National Air & Space Museum. Max had the opportunity to fly with Sean as part of the EAA’s Young Eagles program, of which Tucker
is the chairman. Created to introduce children to flight, Sean flew Max, free of charge, in his Oracle Extra 300 aircraft across the Long Island and New York City area. Sean Tucker is a civilian pilot performer for this year’s Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. Max loves to travel, and learning to be a pilot is one of his passions. This flight was his first step to achieving that goal!
He was recently accepted into the National Junior Honor Society, and is on the North Middle School soccer team, swim team and a part of the drama club. Max also volunteers in the community, singing and performing at senior centers with members of his church. Max is a fantastic example of the many positive and dedicated students who are part of the Brentwood School District.
LOVE OF MUSIC - Recently, the Bay Shore High School Tri-M visited South Country School. Students in third grade are getting ready to decide if they’d like to play a musical instrument in the fourth grade. The Tri-M members demonstrated the different instruments South Country students can choose if they decide to join band or orchestra next year. Thank you to Mrs. DeKenipp for putting this together and to Mrs. Mendolia for giving us the opportunity to hear her amazing students play!

Dinota is in her third year as a participant in the New York State Master Teacher program, and works for the New York State Education Department as an education specialist in the development of the PS
chemistry exam. She and her husband are lifelong residents of the East Islip School District and have been involved in the school and community in a variety of roles. “I am deeply honored to have been chosen by the district for the award,” said Dinota. “East Islip has a faculty that is comprised of truly caring, compassionate and dedicated educators and I am humbled to have been recognized. I am proud to have worked here for the past 26 years.”

He is truly deserving of this recognition.” As an educator, Mennecke has been at the forefront of utilizing technology in the classroom, and was one of the first teachers in the district to begin using an interactive white board for his lessons. Over the course of a 20-year career, he has taught Regents living environment and chemistry, marine biology, AP biology, and anatomy and physiology. He has been the adviser of the high school’s Keep Islip Clean environmental club for many years, overseeing a large group of KIC junior commissioners each year and encouraging students to undertake environmental activism at the local level through community cleanups and beautification events. Mennecke spends every other summer in the badlands of North Dakota and Montana, hunting for dinosaur fossils with the Marmarth Research Foundation, a group of
paleontologists that works closely with teachers and students in their educational field program. Mennecke is a published poet, and his work has appeared in “Hanging Loose,” “Avocet,” “Long Island Quarterly” and the environmental anthology “Fracture: Essays, Poems and Stories on Fracking in America.” His first book of poetry, “Pencils Down,” was published in January 2017. “It is an honor to receive this award from Sen. Boyle,” said Mennecke. “I am fortunate to work with so many amazing, dedicated teachers and faculty members at Islip High School. It is a pleasure to come to Islip every day, where I not only teach biology to my students but learn from them as well. Through KIC Club and community organizations like Seatuck, students become global citizens while acting locally on behalf of the environment. I thank everyone, especially my awesome wife Suzanne and my daughter Katerina.”
